(-)-Cathinone and d-norpseudoephedrine (DNE) in the dose range 0.2-1.2 mg/ml produced a reduction in contractions of skeletal muscle, evoked by direct and indirect electrical stimulation and antagonised the facilitatory action of physostigmine on the neuromuscular junction; but failed to antagonise a partial blockade induced by d-tubocurarine (dTb) as occurs with norepinephrine or epinephrine. The effect of different concentrations (0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mM) of dopamine on chemo-afferent activity was studied in the rabbit carotid body superfused in vitro. Excitation was the sole effect observed: it was always present for dopamine tests at 0.1 and 1 mM but was found in only 4 out of 9 tests at 0.01 mM and in 1 out of 5 tests at 0.001 mM. Chlorpromazine (CPZ) binding and the binding to isolated guinea pig superior cervical of a toxic metabolite 7,8-dihydroxychlorpromazine (7,8-diOH-CPZ) were studied under resting and potassium-stimulated conditions. Maximal binding occurred more rapidly in high potassium, with binding of CPZ 10 fold higher than that of 7,8-diOH-CPZ. Adrenergic beta-receptor sensitivity of six male patients with essential tremor and six age-matched normal controls was assessed by measuring the response in the heart rate and postural tremor to incremental injections of the adrenergic beta-agonist isoprenaline. The relative increase in heart rate and tremor in essential tremor patients did not differ from that in normal controls. It is concluded that no major abnormality is likely to exist in the peripheral adrenergic beta-receptor sensitivity in essential tremor.

In 23 children with febrile convulsions the concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured by a radioreceptor assay. The mean CSF GABA concentration of 134 (range, 73-294) pmoles/ml was significantly lower than that of 16 seizure-free children serving as controls, who had 210 (range, 117-475) pmoles/ml. The reduction in CSF GABA levels in patients with febrile convulsions was not reflected in plasma GABA concentrations. Carpal tunnel syndrome in the presence of anomalous median to ulnar nerve communications in the forearm produces a characteristic change in motor conduction studies.
