Usher's syndrome.

Usher's syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition of congenital sensorineural hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa. Other abnormalities are present but inconsistently, suggesting the genetic concepts of pleiotropy and heterogeneity. Accordingly, several classifications have been suggested. Clinical findings involve the visual, auditory and vestibular systems. The identification of the carrier state would allow for more timely and accurate genetic counselling. A screening program for Usher's syndrome appears feasible. This would allow affected, deaf individuals to prepare themselves for the…

Acrocallosal syndrome.

Acrocallosal syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder of brain malformation and complex polydactyly. We report on an additional patient with this disorder. It is suggested that increased birth weight and cerebellar hypoplasia occur in acrocallosal syndrome. The finding of an extra bone within the anterior fontanel in our patient suggests similarity to the Xt mouse mutant, which is homologous to Greig syndrome in man. This provides additional support for the hypothesis of allelism of the Greig and acrocallosal syndromes.

Stickler syndrome.

Stickler syndrome is an autosomal-dominant disorder of connective tissue characterized by skeletal, orofacial, and ocular abnormalities. The most common specific roentgenographic findings include coxa valga and widening of the femoral neck. Acetabular protrusio, chondrolysis, avascular necrosis, and vertebral changes have also been described. Premature arthritic changes are to be expected. Congenital myopia and micrognathia are the most common nonskeletal findings. This syndrome should be considered when patients have unexplained coxa valga, especially with concomitant acetabular protrusio.

Brown's syndrome.

Brown's syndrome is a well-recognized clinical disorder of ocular motility manifesting most notably a restriction of active and passive elevation in adduction. The original name, "superior oblique tendon sheath syndrome," is no longer appropriate, since it has been shown that the tissue surrounding the anterior superior oblique tendon is blameless as a restrictive force. "True" and "simulated" as descriptive modifiers should also be discarded, as they relate to the disproven sheath concept. Brown's syndrome occurs as a congenital or acquired, constant or intermittent condition; the common link…
