Risk of conduct and oppositional defiant disorder symptoms in offspring of parents with mental health problems: Findings from the Raine Study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data indicate that paternal and maternal mental health difficulties are predictors of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in offspring. We tested the association between maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms and paternal emotional problems with CD and ODD symptoms in adolescent offspring aged 17. METHODS: Data was from the Raine Study, a birth cohort study based in Western Australia. Offspring CD and ODD symptoms at age 17 years were measured using the DSM-oriented scales of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Depression, Anxiety, and

[Occurrence of anxiety and depression disorders after acute cardiac events during hospital rehabilitation. Application of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale as a screening instrument].

UNLABELLED: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is one of the most frequently used screening instruments for comorbid psychiatric disorders in patients with somatic diseases. Depression and anxiety disorders occurring after acute coronary events predict a worse prognosis and rehabilitation outcome and impair the patient's quality of life. Therefore, diagnosis and treatment of depression and anxiety are important clinical issues. METHODS: Item characteristics, different aspects of reliability and validity of the HADS test parameters have been analysed on the basis of a follow-up study

A new approach to assess illness behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a scale to assess the different aspects of illness behaviour and to evaluate the measure in depressive and somatising patients. METHODS: The psychometric properties of the scale were assessed in the following diagnostic groups: patients with major depression (n=36), major depressives with an additional somatisation syndrome (n=40), patients with somatisation syndrome (n=37), and a control group (n=37). After multiple test construction procedures and factor analysis, we developed the Scale for the Assessment of Illness Behaviour (SAIB). RESULTS:

Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Negative Psychological Symptoms among Elderly Widows Living Alone in a Chinese Remote Sample: A Cross-Sectional Study.

(1) Background: Research indicates that most elderly widows are at a high risk of experiencing negative psychological symptoms. It is common for elderly women in rural and remote areas to live alone without family support to cope with stress due to the mass rural-to-urban migration of China’s youth labor force. Such a situation further worsens their psychological health and well-being. However, the prevalence of and risk factors associated with negative psychological symptoms (loneliness, depression, and anxiety) among remote elderly widows living alone in China are currently unclear; (2) Meth

Development and reliability testing of a symptom assessment scale for postoperative patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) often experience pain, fatigue, decreased appetite, anxiety and depression, etc. Previous studies have focused on investigating a single symptom in patients with AIS, ignoring possible synergistic effects between symptoms, or using self-administered questionnaires that have not been scientifically evaluated. AIMS: To develop a symptom assessment scale for postoperative patients with AIS and test its reliability and validity. METHODS: Using the symptom experience model as the theoretical framework, we constructed a bank of scale

An external construct validity study of Rorschach personality variables.

This study examined (a) hypothesized relationships between Rorschach variables and self-report test measures relating to nominally similar aspects of personality functioning and (b) interrelationships among Rorschach variables. Sixty-two undergraduates were administered the Rorschach, Barron Ego Strength Scale, Kaplan Self-Derogation Scale, Eagly Self-Esteem Scale, Multiple Affective Adjective Checklist (MAACL), Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and the Rotter Locus of Control Scale. Only a few of the predictions received confirmation: inanimate movement (m) correlated, as expected, wi

Williams syndrome: on the role of intellectual abilities in anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) have an elevated risk for anxiety disorders throughout the life span, making it a research priority to identify the individual factors associated with anxiety. Most of the existing literature is based on questionnaire data and suggests that impaired executive functions (EF) increase the risk for anxiety in WS. The aim of this study was to use direct measures by trained clinicians to investigate the effects of general intelligence, inhibition, sustained attention, and working memory on anxiety in WS, to further elucidate potential underlying m

Can the GAD-7 be used to create valid, reliable, feasible and actionable outcome-focused paediatric anxiety quality measures for use across specialty and paediatric treatment settings?

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders of childhood and adolescence, affecting between 15% and 30% of youth. Rates rose sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, and untreated anxiety is associated with impaired functioning and increased risk of depression, suicidality and substance use in adulthood. Evidence-based treatments such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are highly effective yet remain underused, while non-recommended treatments, including benzodiazepines, are often prescribed. Despite the publ

Associations between Internet Addiction, Psychiatric Comorbidity, and Maternal Depression and Anxiety in Clinically Referred Children and Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Internet addiction (IA) has become a global problem and is one of the most common reasons for children to be referred for intervention because IA results in social and educational dysfunction and conflict with parents. IA is associated with various comorbid psychiatric disorders, with notable association between IA and family factors. However, little is known about parental psychopathology. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of IA and association between IA and maternal depression and anxiety in clinical samples after adjusting for comorbidities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic solvent induced encephalopathy (CSE).

INTRODUCTION: Long term occupational exposure to organic solvents may induce chronic solvent-induced encephalopathy (CSE), characterized by mild to severe cognitive impairment, generally seen as the key diagnostic feature. Psychiatric disorders are often diagnosed in subjects with CSE, but were never studied in more detail. This study was designed to establish the prevalence rates of DSM IV mood, anxiety, and alcohol and substance related disorders in patients with CSE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In CSE, n=203 (consecutively recruited between 2002 and 2005), defined according to the criteria of t

Investigating symptom domains of bipolar disorder for Spanish-speakers using the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale.

BACKGROUND: A Spanish language rating scale which assesses the range of bipolar disorder symptoms is needed. There are rating scales commonly used, however they do not address commonly expressed symptoms associated with bipolar disorder and have varied rating systems. There are also few comparisons of symptom severity between Spanish and English speaking patients, due to limitations in available rating scales. METHODS: We conducted psychometric assessment of the Spanish language Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale (BISS) (N=71) for persons with bipolar disorder, which assesses 5 domains: mani
