2-Mercaptobenzimidazole (2-MBI), a rubber antioxidant, is known to exhibit potent antithyroid toxicity in rats and is a candidate as an environmental endocrine disrupter. 2-Mercaptomethylbenzimidazoles (a 1:1 mixture of 4-methyl and 5-methyl isomers, MMBIs), are also employed industrially as rubber antioxidants and are suspected to exert antithyroid toxicity such as 2-MBI. In this investigation, acute and subacute oral toxicity studies of MMBIs in Wistar rats were conducted. The clinical signs of acute oral toxicity were observed including decreased spontaneous movement, a paralytic gait, sali

UNLABELLED: Low 24-hour thyroid uptake of I-131 (I-131 uptake) is a common finding that influences evaluation of the thyroid gland.
METHODS: We studied 20 female patients aged 16-82 years with low I-131 uptake. The following causes of reduced I-131 uptake were defined as (A) six cases with subacute thyroiditis, (B) seven cases with T4 suppression therapy, and (C) seven cases with iodinated pharmaceuticals use. Thirty-minute Tc-99m tetrofosmin thyroid scan was performed within 24 hours of the I-131 thyroid study.
RESULTS: The results were correlated with neck ultrasound, serum TSH and biopsy

The concentration of thyroglobulin (TG) in the circulation can be measured by a sensitive, specific, convenient radioimmunoassay. TG is found in the circulation of virtually all normal subjects. It is present in elevated concentrations in patients with a wide variety of thyroid diseases including benign and malignant tumors, multinodular goiter, subacute thyroiditis, Graves' disease and others. At the present time, the most important clinical role of TG measurements is in the evaluation of patients who have been treated for thyroid cancer. As greater clinical correlation is obtained, the usefu

Thyroid gland is composed of many spheroid structures called thyroid follicles, in which thyrocytes are integrated in their specific structural and functional polarization. In conventional monolayer and floating cultures, the cells cannot reorganize follicle structures with normal polarity. By contrast, in a 3-D collagen gel culture thyrocytes easily and stably reconstruct follicles with physiological polarity. Integration of thyrocyte growth and differentiation appears to result in eventual thyroid folliculogenesis. 3-D collagen gel culture and subacute thyroiditis, a specific thyroid disorde

Clinical and laboratory findings and long term outcome (1.5-9 yr) in 7 women and 1 man with chronic thyroiditis (CT) who had painful tender thyroid enlargement were evaluated and compared with those in 11 women with subacute thyroiditis (SAT). Histological features consistent with SAT were not demonstrable, and various forms of CT (fibrous variant, diffuse, or focal lymphocytic thyroiditis) were observed. There were no differences in mean age, duration of symptoms, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein values in the 2 diseases. Seven patients had a history of goiter, and none

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has played a significant part in systematic damage, affecting lives and leading to significant mortality. The endocrine system is one of the systems affected by this pandemic outbreak. The relationship between them has been identified in previous and ongoing research. The mechanism through which severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) can achieve this is similar to that for organs that express angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors, which is the primary binding site of the virus. Endocrine cells widely express angiotensin-converting e

To elucidate the value of thyroglobulin staining by the immunoperoxidase method in fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid diseases, it was performed on fine needle aspiration smears of 57 cases of various thyroid diseases. Thirteen of 22 cases (59%) with benign nodular goiter were positive. Eight of 14 cases (57%) with papillary thyroid carcinoma were positive. Among these eight cases with positive staining, seven were at clinical stage II or less. Among the other six cases with negative staining, five cases were in clinical stage III or more. There was a significant relationship between c

Amiodarone induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) occurs most frequently in euthyroid patients with nodular goiter or Graves' disease due to release of iodine from this iodine rich drug. However, some cases of AIT have been attributed to an inflammatory process of the thyroid gland due to amiodarone itself. We have studied the echographic pattern of the thyroid in 11 euthyroid patients who had an episode of AIT 32.4 +/- 3.6 months earlier due to amiodarone induced thyroiditis. There was a significant increase in dyshomogeneous echo patterns and hyperechogenecity which suggests fibrotic lesions. These fi

To elucidate the pathophysiology of CGRP in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), we measured the plasma CGRP level in patients with thyroid disease employing RIA. The plasma CGRP level (normal level 12.7 pg/ml) was elevated in all five preoperative patients with MTC, ranging from 128 pg/ml to 2010 pg/ml, and in ten of 17 postoperative patients who indicated possible recurrence. On the other hand, CGRP levels showed low frequencies of elevation in 96 patients with other thyroid tumors (anaplastic carcinoma, malignant lymphoma, follicular adenoma and adenomatous goiter), subacute thy

The role of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNA) was examined in 384 patients with thyroid diseases referred to the thyroid clinic from May 1984 to June 1988. The cytological diagnoses were 65 (16.9%) malignant neoplasms, 137 (35.7%) benign neoplasms, 135 (35.2%) chronic thyroiditis, 20 (5.2%) thyroid cysts, and 27 (7.0%) other thyroid diseases including Graves' disease and subacute thyroiditis. Ninety-eight patients were selected for thyroidectomy based on criteria, which included clinical and cytological diagnosis, and the following pathological diagnoses of resected specimens were obtained

Enlargement of the thyroid gland is common in adolescent girls, but there have been no previous reports of the frequency of goiter in pregnant teenagers. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of goiter in 309 consecutive pregnant adolescent patients, ages 11 to 19 years, who presented for prenatal care at the University of California (San Diego) Medical Center Teen OB Clinic. Eighteen patients (6%) were found to have a goiter. Subsequent diagnostic tests revealed that 28% of the patients had autoimmune thyroid disorders (chronic thyroiditis or Graves' disease), and the remainde

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) encompasses an umbrella of symptoms, including cognitive decline, seizures, neurological focal deficits, stroke, psychosis, dementia, and coma. Its pathogenesis is not clear, nor is its mechanism by which it causes strokes. A 56-year-old African American female with nodular thyroid disease presented with subacute encephalopathy, amnesia, and bilateral symmetric cerebral watershed strokes in the setting of elevated antithyroid antibodies that clinically improved after immunotherapy. This is a rare reported case of possible autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) presenting w

UNLABELLED: Infections of the thyroid gland are rare. Its innate resistance to infections can be attributed to its unique anatomical features and rich blood supply. High clinical suspicion is required as a delay in diagnosis can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Major pathogens include the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species; however, Gram-negative organisms have been found especially in immunocompromised hosts. We present a rare case of acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) secondary to Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection in a woman known to be infected wit

We report a patient with a history of T-cell ALL in remission who presented with symptoms and laboratory values consistent with subacute thyroiditis but was found to have leukemic thyroiditis as the first clinical manifestation of leukemic relapse. Bone marrow examination at this time demonstrated recurrent ALL. After successful re-induction with chemotherapy and an allogeneic bone marrow transplant this patient developed an isolated recurrence of her ALL manifested by symptomatic thyromegaly and a new mediastinal mass that was treated with irradiation. Despite no medullary recurrence of ALL,

Thyroid disease has now become the second largest disease in the endocrine field; SPECT imaging is particularly important for the clinical diagnosis of thyroid diseases. However, there is little research on the application of SPECT images in the computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid diseases based on machine learning methods. A convolutional neural network with optimization-based computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid diseases using SPECT images is developed. Three categories of diseases are considered, and they are Graves' disease, Hashimoto disease, and subacute thyroiditis. A modified DenseNet a

A variety of thyroid abnormalities are commonly seen in clinical practice and can in many cases be accurately diagnosed and managed by the primary care physician. In patients with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, classic features are usually present, but in some, particularly the elderly, the conditions present atypically. In addition, several other conditions can mimic thyroid problems, and a number of drugs can alter thyroxine levels or actual thyroid function. Laboratory measurements, including serum thyrotropin and thyroxine levels and triiodothyronine uptake, may be helpful in diagnosi

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is now a worldwide pandemic. Among the many extra-pulmonary manifestations of COVID-19, recent evidence suggested a possible occurrence of thyroid dysfunction.
PURPOSE: The Aim of the present review is to summarize available studies regarding thyroid function alterations in patients with COVID-19 and to overview the possible physio-pathological explanations.
CONCLUSIONS: The repercussions of the thyroid of COVID-19 seem to be related, in part, with the occurrence of a "cytokine storm" that would, in turn, induce a "non-thyroidal illness". Some specific cytokines and chem

Twenty-six specimens obtained from 23 patients with clinically and laboratory-proven silent thyroiditis were examined histologically; 11 specimens were obtained during the thyrotoxic phase, and 15 specimens during the early or late recovery phase. All specimens showed chronic thyroiditis, focal or diffuse type; and lymphoid follicles were present in about half of the specimens. Most specimens showed neither stromal fibrosis nor oxyphilic cell changes. The follicular disruptions, which varied from moderate to severe and involved nearly all the visible follicles, were characteristic and common h

In acute and subacute disease the active thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and tetraiodothyroacetic acid (tetrac), are decreased while serum-thyroxine (T4) levels tend to be slightly reduced. Conversely, the inactive metabolite, reverse triiodothyronine (reverse T3), is increased indicating a diversion of T4 metabolism from an activating to an inactivating pathway. With convalescence the serum levels of T3, tetrac, and T4 recover while reverse T3 decreases to normal. These changes occur without significant alterations in serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone, indicating maintenance
