Association of Ixodes pacificus (Acari: ixodidae) with the spatial and temporal distribution of equine granulocytic ehrlichiosis in California.

This study was conducted to determine if the biology of certain ticks associated with horses regulates the spatial and temporal distribution of equine granulocytic ehrlichiosis (EGE) in California north of Monterey County. We compared the spatial and temporal distribution of EGE cases with the seasons of activity and life histories of ticks that infest horses. Spatially, cases collected from equine veterinarians clustered around each other in a manner different from the way in which control cities of practice were distributed, with foci limited to the Sierra Nevada and coastal foothills. Cases

Lyme disease and migrating birds in the Saint Croix River Valley.

During a study of migrating land birds in 1987, we examined over 9,200 individual birds representing 99 species from the Saint Croix River Valley, a Lyme disease-endemic area of east central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. We found that 250 deer tick (Ixodes dammini) larvae and nymphs infested 58 birds from 15 migrant species; 56 ticks (22.4%) were positive for the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. Five ground-foraging migrant bird species favoring mesic habitats, veery (Catharus fuscescens), ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapillus), northern waterthrush (S. novaboracensis), common ye

Selective versus strategic control against Rhipicephalus microplus in cattle: A comparative analysis of efficacy, animal health, productivity, cost, and resistance management.

This study compared selective control versus strategic control against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, under conditions of a real dairy farm. Strategic control requires that all animals be treated with acaricide at regular pre-determined intervals. Selective control only requires treatment of infested animals and only when they are at or above a pre-determined threshold. Tick counts on animals and in pasture were performed and the susceptibility of tick populations to the different treatment methods was evaluated at the beginning and end of the study using the Larval Packet Test, Larval I

Serologic Evidence for Babesia bigemina Infection in Wild Yak (Bos mutus) in Qinghai Province, China.

Piroplasmosis, caused by tick-borne protozoan parasites of the genera Theileria and Babesia, is one of the most economically important infections of domestic ruminants in China. We evaluated the prevalence of antibodies to Babesia bigemina in wild yaks (Bos mutus) from Qinghai Province, China. Of 91 samples, 24% had detectable B. bigemina antibodies, and significant differences in prevalence were observed between those older than 5 yr and those younger than 5 yr. We collected 1,679 ticks belonging to two Ixodid genera from the infested wild yaks. The most prevalent tick species was Dermacentor

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens with zoonotic importance in animals in Southeast Asia: A decade of evidence from systematic review and meta-analysis.

Tick-borne zoonotic pathogens pose a growing threat across Southeast Asia, driven by high biodiversity, environmental change, and close human-animal contact. Yet, no systematic review has consolidated evidence on tick species and their host-pathogen associations across the region over the past decade. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between 2015 and 2025 in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Literature findings from PubMed and Web of Science retrieved 198 articles of which 122 articles were met with inclusion criteria. Included studi

Identification of ticks from conflict Sumatran tigers ( Panthera tigris sumatrae ) in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases transmitted by ticks pose risks to both wildlife and humans. In Indonesia, tick-borne infections are rarely considered in differential diagnoses of febrile illnesses such as dengue and malaria, leading to potential underdiagnosis. Wildlife-human conflict, including cases of Sumatran tigers entering residential areas, may facilitate pathogen spillover at the human-animal interface. AIM: This study aimed to identify and characterize molecular features of tick-borne pathogens associated with conflict-affected wildlife using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplif

Research on Babesia: A bibliometric assessment of a neglected tick-borne parasite.

Given the emergence and reemergence of tick-borne diseases, here we assessed the publishing patterns of research focused on Babesia. We also discuss the implications for the articles published in the last decade, and how more clinical and epidemiological information concerning Babesia is still required. The findings of this article would be useful to define research priorities about Babesia and diagnose the important of scientific production on this pathogen.

Seasonal population dynamics of ixodes ticks and tick-borne encephalitis virus.

Seasonality of the epidemic and epizootic processes of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) depend on the period of activity of ixodid ticks Ixodes persulcatus Schulze and I. ricinus Linnaeus, which are the main reservoirs and vectors of TBE virus, and also on the process of their activation. The period of activity is the period during which the ticks occur in the active state. Activation is the transition into this state of ticks that moulted from the preceding stage and completed post-moulting development. For I. persulcatus, the first adult ticks generally emerge between April 10 and May 9. Under

Relapsing fever.

Relapsing fewer is an infection to be considered in the differential diagnosis of an immigrant´s febrile illness. It is a severe, tick-borne or body louse-borne infection caused by the relapsing fever associated borrelia species. The body louse-borne infection is in particular encountered in the Horn of Africa region due to poor hygiene, and has during the past year been described in several European countries as imported by refugees coming from this region. Doctors should thus bear relapsing fever in mind as a differential diagnosis in a febrile refugee having recently arrived in Finland.

Geographical epidemiology of Hyalomma anatolicum and Rhipicephalus microplus in Pakistan: A systematic review.

The livestock sector contributes almost 11% of Pakistan's GDP and is crucial to 35 million people's livelihoods. Ticks are a major economic threat, as over 80% of livestock, such as bovines, are tick-infested with Hyalomma and Rhipicephalus tick species. Hyalomma anatolicum and Rhipicephalus microplus are the most common tick species collected from livestock, transmitting primarily anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and theileriosis. We aimed to identify the geographical distribution of these two tick species and hot spot areas where the risk of these diseases being transmitted by these ticks is high.

Spatial and temporal patterns of the emerging tick-borne pathogen Borrelia miyamotoi in blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) in New York.

Borrelia miyamotoi, a bacterium that causes relapsing fever, is found in ixodid ticks throughout the northern hemisphere. The first cases of human infection with B. miyamotoi were identified in 2011. In the eastern USA, blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) become infected by feeding on an infected vertebrate host, or through transovarial transmission. We surveyed B. miyamotoi prevalence in ticks within forested habitats in Dutchess County, New York, and identified possible reservoir hosts. To assess spatial variation in infection, we collected questing nymphal ticks at > 150 sites. To assess

Risk factors for tick attachment to smallholder dairy cattle in Tanzania.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tanga and Iringa regions of Tanzania, and a longitudinal study in Tanga, to investigate tick-control methods and other factors influencing tick attachment to the cattle of smallholder dairy farms. Most farmers reported applying acaricides at intervals of 1-2 weeks, most used acaricides that require on-farm dilution and most farmers incorrectly diluted the acaricides. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Boophilus spp. ticks were those most-frequently encountered on the cattle, but few cattle carried ticks of any species (only 13 and 4.6% of tick counts of t

A relapsing fever Borrelia and spotted fever Rickettsia in ticks from an Andean valley, central Chile.

In humans, emerging infectious diseases are mostly zoonoses with ticks playing an important role as vectors. Tick-borne relapsing fever Borrelia and spotted fever Rickettsia occur in endemic foci along tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. However, both are widely neglected etiologic agents. In this study, we performed molecular analyses in order to assess the presence of Borrelia and Rickettsia DNA in ticks infesting small-mammals within a National Reserve located in the Andes Mountains, central Chile. While hard ticks were negative for the presence of both agents, sequences of four

First detection and molecular identification of Babesia gibsoni from Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks.

Babesia gibsoni was firstly identified in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks infested on dogs in Asia. A total of 1195 ticks collected from veterinary practitioners and pet clinics were examined for Babesia by nested-polymerase chain reaction assay based on the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssrRNA) gene. Babesia infection was detected in nymph, male and female ticks with an infection rate of 2.42%, 0.98% and 1.97%, respectively. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis revealed that these Babesia spp. were genetically affiliated to the same clades within the genospecies of B. gibsoni and B. vogeli, a

Seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infection in blood donors and park rangers in relation to local habitat.

Serum samples were obtained from blood donors in eleven selected locations in Ireland and tested for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and immunoblot (IB). The highest seroprevalence (8.7%) was found in Portumna, an area rated as high risk because of the presence of public access woodland harbouring both ticks and spirochaete reservoir hosts. The lowest seroprevalence (0.0%) was found in Ballina, an area where there is no suitable woodland though ticks are common on pastures grazed by cattle and sheep. These results support the findings of an earlier less exte

Integrated tick and tick-borne disease control trials in crossbred dairy cattle in Malawi.

Crossbred dairy heifers on a farm in an East Coast fever (ECF) endemic area in Malawi were immunised against Theileria parva, Anaplasma spp., Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium. They were treated at infrequent intervals with chlorfenvinphos to limit infestation with adult ticks, without providing complete tick control. In one trial, which tested a threshold dipping regimen, 20 heifers were dipped only once in 6 months to control a flush of Boophilus microplus. Unimmunised controls showed serological evidence of exposure to T. parva and B. bigemina, and one died of ECF, but

Problems in the study and prophylaxis of mixed infections transmitted by ixodid ticks.

The spread of mixed infections with natural focality transmitted by ixodid ticks is a normal phenomenon attributable to trends in the relationships of different pathogens in the vector organism and ecosystem as a whole. Any disease developing as a result of tick bite should be regarded as a potentially mixed infection. Clinically, tick-borne mixed infections proceed more severely than the corresponding diseases caused by a single agent. The residual course of the disease may sometimes be accounted for by the persistence of two or even several pathogens. This implies the necessity of a comprehe

Ectoparasite load in the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata Linnaeus, 1758 in Central Italy.

The crested porcupine Hystrix cristata is a large body-sized rodent, occurring in Europe only in the Italian Peninsula, where it may have been introduced in early Medieval times. Its parasite fauna is currently poorly known and limited to few anecdotal observations. We have analyzed the ectoparasite load of 165 crested porcupines from Tuscany and Latium (Central Italy). Both captured and road-killed individuals were checked for fleas and ticks. Overall, only 39 porcupines were infested by four species of ticks and five of fleas. Abundance of ectoparasites was higher in areas with higher habita
