[Clinical effect of premolar extraction with high torque self-locking appliances].

PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical effect of extraction correction of patients with maxillary protrusion by using Damon high torque appliances. METHODS: Forty patients with extraction of four first premolars due to orthodontic treatment were selected. They had protrusion of maxilla and were randomly divided into two groups. Both arches of Damon group were treated with Damon high torque appliances and MBT group were corrected with traditional MBT straight wire appliance; patients in two groups received sliding mechanics for adduction of upper anterior teeth. Cephalometric radiophotographs were a

Reliability of the magnification method for localisation of ectopic upper canines.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability of the magnification method for localisation of palatally placed canines. METHODS: Panoramic radiographs were taken of subjects, aged 10 to 12 years, with unerupted upper permanent canines. Two periapical radiographs (horizontal parallax method) were then used to identify 36 sublects with one palatally placed canine. Differences in the sizes of crowns of the canines on the panoramic radiographs were used to identify which tooth was palatally placed. The observer was blinded to the side with the palatally placed canine. The parallax and magnification resu

Repair characteristics of horizontal root fracture: a case report.

Radicular fractures in permanent teeth are uncommon injuries among dental traumas, comprising 0.5-7% of the cases. Fracture occurs most often in the middle-third of the root and rarely at the apical-third. The present paper reports a clinical case of a horizontal radicular fracture located between the middle- and apical-third of a upper left-central incisor followed-up for over 3 years. The tooth was extracted owing to periodontal reasons. Histomorphologically, it showed pulp-vitality preservation and root healing by hard-tissue deposition.

Case Report: Ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinus with infected dentigerous cyst assessed by cone beam CT.

Ectopic development of teeth in nondental areas is uncommon, especially in the maxillary sinus. A panoramic radiograph is the routine diagnostic radiographic examination performed for this type of eruption, although cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is highly recommended for further localization of the ectopic tooth and assessment of the characteristics of any associated lesion before a surgical procedure. We report a case of a 13-year-old female student who presented with purulent discharge posterior to the upper right second molar with a bad taste and foul odour. Radiographic examination

Epithelial histogenesis during tooth development.

This paper reviews the current understanding of the progressive changes mediating dental epithelial histogenesis as a basis for future collaborative studies. Tooth development involves morphogenesis, epithelial histogenesis and cell differentiation. The consecutive morphological stages of lamina, bud, cap and bell are also characterized by changes in epithelial histogenesis. Differential cell proliferation rates, apoptosis, and alterations in adhesion and shape lead to the positioning of groups of cells with different functions. During tooth histo-morphogenesis changes occur in basement membra

Correction factors in the EPR dose reconstruction for residents of the Middle and Lower Techa riverside.

During 1949-1956, the first Soviet nuclear weapons plant, Mayak, released about 7.6 x 10(7) m(-3) of liquid radioactive waste with a total activity of 10(17) Bq into the Techa River (Southern Urals, Russia). 90Sr contributed 11.6% to the total waste radioactivity. As a result of these radioactive discharges, about 28,000 local residents were exposed to ionizing radiation, and some of them received relatively high doses. Internal exposure of the population residing at the Middle and Lower Techa riverside was mostly from 90Sr deposited in bone and tooth tissues. In order to reconstruct radiation

Unique Tooth Morphology and Prismatic Enamel in Late Cretaceous Sphenodontians from Argentina.

Mammals and reptiles have evolved divergent adaptations for processing abrasive foods. Mammals have occluding, diphyodont dentitions with taller teeth (hypsodonty), more complex occlusal surfaces, continuous tooth eruption, and forms of prismatic enamel that prolong the functional life of each tooth [1, 2]. The evolution of prismatic enamel in particular was a key innovation that made individual teeth more resilient to abrasion in early mammals [2-4]. In contrast, reptiles typically have thin, non-prismatic enamel, and shearing, polyphyodont dentitions with multi-cusped or serrated tooth crown…

Application of digital positioning guide plates for the surgical extraction of multiple impacted supernumerary teeth: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: An extra tooth in the normal tooth sequence in any region of the dental arch is regarded as a supernumerary tooth (SNT). Due to the large variation in location and morphology, the extraction of impacted SNTs is an extensive and complex procedure with high risks of several complications. This report presents a rare case of seven impacted SNTs in the bilateral upper and lower arch that were successfully extracted with the use of digital positioning guide plates. CASE SUMMARY: In January 2022, a 21-year-old male was referred to our department with a chief complaint of pain in relatio

Abnormal tooth size and morphology in subjects with cleft lip and/or palate in the north of England.

The aim of this study was to investigate tooth size and morphology in subjects with unilateral cleft palate (UCLP), bilateral cleft palate (BCLP), and isolated cleft palate (ICP) living in the north of England and to compare these with a control group. The measurements were undertaken retrospectively using dental study casts. To assess tooth size, the mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions of each fully erupted permanent tooth were measured using digital Vernier callipers. The following morphological features of the teeth were assessed: upper incisor shovelling and crown form, the presence of

[Study of trace elements in bovine permanent teeth germ].

It is well documented that uptake of various trace elements take place during tooth development. The purpose of this experiment was to analyze the uptake amount of these various trace elements, in particular Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu throughout the tooth germ formation all the way up to the eruption stage. Bovine permanent tooth germs were used in this experiment. Instead of the conventional morphologic stages, further subdivision into eight groups were employed. The resultant findings were as follows: 1) Uptake of Cd and Zn were verified during the root development to early tooth eruption stage in en

Esthetic periodontal surgery for impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisors.

Clinicians do not frequently see impacted dilacerated maxillary incisors in their patients. When they do, there are several diagnostic and management challenges for correcting root dilacerations. An unfavorable esthetic outcome might occur as a result of soft-tissue complications during surgical eruption procedures. We present 2 patients with an impacted and dilacerated maxillary central incisor. Computed tomography scans with 3-dimensional reformation were used to accurately assess the positions of the dilacerated teeth, the degree of dilaceration, and the stage of root formation. The therapy

Guided eruption of an impacted maxillary right canine: a multidisciplinary case report.

Maxillary canine impaction is a relatively common eruption disturbance that can compromise smile esthetics and functional occlusion. Successful management of impacted canines often requires a multidisciplinary approach combining surgical exposure, orthodontic traction, and radiographic monitoring. A 16-year-old girl presented with a chief concern of dissatisfaction with her smile esthetics. Clinical and radiographic evaluations revealed a palatally impacted maxillary right canine and a retained primary maxillary right canine, which was subsequently extracted. Orthodontic treatment was initiate

Extraoral Retrograde Root Canal Filling of an Orthodontic-induced External Root Resorption Using CEM Cement.

Inflammatory external root resorption (IERR) after orthodontic treatments is an unusual complication. This case report describes a non-vital maxillary premolar with symptomatic extensive IERR (with a crown/root ratio of 1:1) after receiving orthodontic treatment. The first appointment included drainage, chemo-mechanical preparation of the canal and intra-canal medication with calcium hydroxide (CH) along with prescription of analgesic/antibiotic. The subsequent one-week follow-up revealed the persistence of symptoms and formation of a sinus tract. Finally, extraoral endodontic treatment was pl

Three-dimensional analysis of the relationship between mandibular retromolar space and positional traits of third molars in non-hyperdivergent adults.

BACKGROUND: The anatomical position of the mandibular third molars (M3s) is located in the distal-most portions of the molar area. In some previous literature, researchers evaluated the relationship between retromolar space (RS) and different classifications of M3 in three‑dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: Two hundred six M3s from 103 patients were included. M3s were grouped according to four classification criteria: PG-A/B/C, PG-I/II/III, mesiodistal angle and buccolingual angle. 3D hard tissue models were reconstructed by CBCT digital imaging. RS was measured r
