The masticatory organ is at the center of dental practice. Tooth loss, regarded as an organ failure, is a core dispute in our profession, as it more often than not does not happen spon-taneously but is influenced by the dentist's treatment plan. Despite the prosthetic possibili-ties of tooth replacement, efforts should be made to preserve as many teeth as possible. Decisions between tooth preservation and extraction are complex and have far-reaching consequences. This article discusses this problem using a clinical case study of a 43-year-old female patient with pronounced localized periodonti…

Root resorption (RR) is defined as the loss of dental hard tissues because of clastic activity inside or outside of tooth the root. In the permanent dentition, RR is a pathologic event; if untreated, it might result in the premature loss of the affected tooth. Several hypotheses have been suggested as the mechanisms of root resorption such as absence of the remnants of Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) and the absence of some intrinsic factors in cementum and predentin such as amelogenin or osteoprotegerin (OPG). It seems that a barrier is formed by the less-calcified intermediate cement

The treatment goals in prosthodontics and dental laboratory technology are to provide patients with long-term predictable and esthetic outcomes. The periodontal tissues define the framework that will maintain ridge height, thickness, color, texture, and gingival-tooth frame. The loss of teeth, residual ridge resorption and the loss of gingival tissues continue to affect long-term and esthetic treatment outcomes. Prosthodontic treatment requires consideration of the potential negative tissue effect that time and normal biologic change might have on the completed prosthetic design. This article

Non-carious tooth tissue loss due to abrasion, attrition, abfraction and erosion has become a significant problem, occurring in up to 80 percent of children and in up to 43 percent of adults. Dental erosion is now recognised as an important cause of tooth tissue loss in both children and adults. It is caused by the presence of intrinsic or extrinsic acid of non-bacterial origin in the mouth. Intrinsic sources of acid include vomiting, regurgitation, gastro-oesophageal reflux or rumination. Extrinsic sources of acid are most commonly dietary acids. Medications, a patient's lifestyle choices and

Deposition of calcium oxalate in the periodontium with accompanying bone loss and tooth resorption, occurred in a 55-year-old woman on long-term renal dialysis for end-stage renal disease. These deposits were birefringent upon examination with polarized light. Scanning electron microscopy of the deposits revealed clusters of sharply angular oblong and needlelike crystals. Microincineration followed by staining with alizarin red S was positive for calcium oxalate. X-ray diffraction studies of the crystals in the tissue specimen revealed a pattern identical to that of commercially prepared calci

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) originate from various components within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing an impact on the masticatory muscles, the joint itself, and associated structures. They are a widely prevalent issue across the world. According to epidemiological research, up to 50% of adults in the population have TMD-related symptoms. The objective of this work was to analyze the existing scientific literature regarding the association between malocclusion classes, bruxism, and tooth loss in relation to the etiology of TMD. This systematic review was conducted following the…

Eruption of mandibular second molars usually occurs around the age of 12. Incomplete eruption of second molars in such young patients can lead to loss of the molars, due to caries, root resorption or periodontal pathology. When a pathology of this kind develops, the treatment option for a mesially impacted molar is often to extract the tooth. If tooth eruption is, however, monitored closely by the dentist and/or orthodontist, early treatment can be considered in order to preserve the tooth. Partially impacted second molars can be placed in a functional anatomical position by surgical uprightin

Patients are increasingly wishing to undergo conventional endodontic treatment rather than to risk the loss of a tooth. Endodontic treatment in teeth that have been previously restored with extensive intracoronal or extracoronal restorations are often difficult to treat. The orientation of the root canals to the crown of the tooth may be lost, and this may often be compounded by the deposition of reparative dentin in the pulp chamber. The operating microscope allows better visualization of the working field, ensuring that the anatomy of the tooth is more readily inspected. This greatly enhance

BACKGROUND: Radiographic periodontal bone loss is one of the most important basis for periodontitis staging, with problems such as limited accuracy, inconsistency, and low efficiency in imaging diagnosis. Deep learning network may be a solution to improve the accuracy and efficiency of periodontitis imaging staging diagnosis. This study aims to establish a comprehensive and accurate radiological staging model of periodontal alveolar bone loss based on panoramic images.
METHODS: A total of 640 panoramic images were included, and 3 experienced periodontal physicians marked the key points needed

During mammalian tooth development, the oral ectoderm and mesenchyme coordinate their growth and differentiation to give rise to organs with precise shapes, sizes and functions. The initial ingrowth of the dental epithelium and its associated dental mesenchyme gives rise to the tooth bud. Next, the epithelial component folds to give the tooth its shape. Coincident with this process, adjacent epithelial and mesenchymal cells differentiate into enamel-secreting ameloblasts and dentin-secreting odontoblasts, respectively. Growth, morphogenesis and differentiation of the epithelium and mesenchyme

Osteoporosis, an age-related condition, is classified into primary and secondary types. Primary osteoporosis encompasses the postmenopausal and senile types; secondary osteoporosis occurs "secondary" to endocrine and renal diseases. Subjects affected by osteoporosis have an overall reduced bone mass and become highly susceptible to bone fractures. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry is the method most often used to determine the risk for osteoporotic fractures. In the past decade, a number of studies have suggested a possible correlation between systemic osteoporosis and alveolar bone loss in per

This study evaluates the efficacy of 3D-printed band and loop space maintainers (3D-BLSMs) to mitigate concerns caused by early primary tooth loss in children when compared to their conventional equivalents. Over 9 months, 62 participants aged 6 to 12 years participated in a randomized clinical study. This study evaluated their failure rates (de-cementation, debonding, solder breakage, loop breakage, band breakage, and abutment tooth fracture), gingival health, and patient overall satisfaction. Random assignments were made to place the participants in two groups: traditional band and loop spac…

Tannerella forsythia is strongly associated with chronic periodontitis, an inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues, leading to tooth loss. Fusobacterium nucleatum, an opportunistic pathogen, is thought to promote dental plaque formation by serving as a bridge bacterium between early- and late-colonizing species of the oral cavity. Previous studies have shown that F. nucleatum species synergize with T. forsythia during biofilm formation and pathogenesis. In the present study, we showed that coinfection of F. nucleatum and T. forsythia is more potent than infection with either speci…

Historically the physiological or pathological loss of tooth structure in situ was deemed to be due to the 'absorption' of tooth structure due to the removal of the inorganic components of dentin and cementum by osteoclastic (dentinoclastic) cellular activity. This nomenclature and the activity that it represented was considered by almost all dental researchers and clinicians in the 1800s and early 1900s. The shift to the concept of 'resorption' occurred in the first half of the 20th century, with clarity emanating from significant research activity on the pathology of osseous structures, orig

Supernumerary teeth are usually regarded as de-novo structures that result from abnormal development by the splitting of a tooth germ. The notions of abnormal and de novo appear to be applicable in only one instance, the morphological dental twin. All other types of supernumerary deciduous teeth can be explained by either a progress zone or an interstitial budding model of tooth differentiation. The development of extra structures as well as the loss of normally-present teeth can be explained by differences in potential within the context of normal development.
