Transgender individuals (TIs) show brain-structural alterations that differ from their biological sex as well as their perceived gender. To substantiate evidence that the brain structure of TIs differs from male and female, we use a combined multivariate and univariate approach. Gray matter segments resulting from voxel-based morphometry preprocessing of N = 1753 cisgender (CG) healthy participants were used to train (N = 1402) and validate (20% holdout N = 351) a support-vector machine classifying the biological sex. As a second validation, we classified N = 1104 patients with depression. A t

Many trans and gender diverse (TGD) people have gender identities that are not exclusively male or female but instead fall in-between or outside of the gender binary (non-binary). It remains unclear if and how those with non-binary gender identity differ from TGD individuals with binary identities. We aimed to understand the sociodemographic and mental health characteristics of people with non-binary identities compared with binary TGD identities. We performed a retrospective audit of new consultations for gender dysphoria between 2011 and 2016 in three clinical settings in Melbourne, Australi

BACKGROUND: Gender affirmation surgery is increasingly prevalent; however, finding a surgeon continues to be difficult. Additionally, the majority of transgender patients utilize the internet for information before elective surgery. Therefore, it is imperative to explore potential online barriers in finding a gender affirming surgeon.
AIMS: The authors sought to use the Internet to search for gender affirming surgeons practicing in the USA, and therefore, reflect the process that patients potentially undergo. We highlight the barriers to information and care that we encountered.
METHODS: We

The cisgender male partners of transgender women have received little attention beyond their sexual behaviour. This is an issue, as marginalisation and social environments determine sexual behaviour and subsequent health outcomes. This article assesses in-depth interviews with cisgender male partners of transgender women in Atlanta and Baltimore, USA. Analysis suggests men experience minority stress that may lead to ameliorative coping processes such as coming out and LGBTQ group affiliation. Specifically, the interviews identify stressful, marginalising reactions from family and friends conce

Social acceptance and legal protections for transgender and gender nonconforming patients have increased over the past decade, but significant health care disparities still remain. Such an area of disparity is discussion with and interventions for fertility, contraception, pregnancy, and lactation in TGNC patients. Providing optimal care starts with creating a welcoming and safe environment. Appropriate preconception education includes the effects of gender-affirming therapies (both surgical and nonsurgical) on fertility as well the fertility preservation techniques that are available. However

INTRODUCTION: Minority stress theories suggest that high rates of discrimination experienced by transgender people are precipitants of substance use. This risk is likely exacerbated by an inadequate provision of trans-inclusive substance misuse services. However, the exclusion of transgender people from the general substance misuse literature makes it difficult to determine the extent to which transgender status influences substance use. A systematic review was undertaken to better understand the prevalence, patterns and correlates of substance use among this group.
METHODS: In accordance wit

OBJECTIVE: Transgender people aim to increase and improve their quality of life by demanding voice and communication intervention services, however clinical recommendations regarding assessment and intervention in the transgender population are based on others' practice, experiences, assumptions. The present study aims to give clinical considerations in speech and language therapy for transgender populations.
METHOD: Thirty-one transgender subjects were taken in to the present study after applying exclusion criteria. Participants were excluded: • If they do not define themselves as transgende

In this article, we describe a community-based research (CBR) approach to making a national online survey of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) inclusive of transgender GBMSM by working with members of the transgender community at all stages of the research process. This collaboration resulted in 209 transgender GBMSM completing our survey and we contrasted their health experiences with 7439 cisgender GBMSM. We found that transgender GBMSM were less likely than cisgender GBMSM to report intercourse without a condom (AOR 0.43; 95% CI: 0.28-0.66) and to have had an HIV te

Transmasculine gender-affirming surgery (GAS) is technically challenging, and in the past associated with a high but improving complication rate. Few surgical centers are performing this surgery, which can include metoidioplasty and phalloplasty, and patients often travel great distances for their surgery. While many will continue care with their original surgeons, others cannot due to social/geographic factors, or because emergencies arise. Thus, patients may seek care with their local urologist for relief of delayed complications, the most common of which include urethral stricture, penile p

Objective: The objective of this article is to describe the hormonal pathways required for breast development in cisgender women and to review the current available literature describing breast growth and breast cancer risk in transgender women. Methods: Literature review and discussion. Results: Early mammary tissue development occurs prenatally. This process is hormone-independent and occurs similarly in males and females. Breast tissue is quiescent until puberty, at which time surging estrogen levels in cisgender girls mediate breast development and growth. Adult breast tissue composition f

The following clinical scenarios are composite cases that illustrate clinically important phenomena based on several patients. Jamie is a 19-year-old who was assigned a female gender at birth and had a history of major depressive disorder in remission. She presented to her primary care physician, psychiatrist, and psychotherapist reporting dysphoria related to gender and requesting gender-affirming hormone therapy. Jamie had symptoms for at least 6 months consistent with DSM-5 criteria for gender dysphoria. After full clinical assessment by her therapist, psychiatrist, and primary care physici

Gender nonconforming youth are at risk for body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Currently, only a small body of literature addresses this high-risk group. The five cases in this series highlight important themes for this patient population from an interdisciplinary perspective. Identified themes include increased risk for self-harm/suicide, complex psychiatric, and medical implications of delay to treatment for either gender dysphoria or disordered eating, and the importance of collaborative management to maximize care and facilitate healthy development to adulthood. The purpose of this

In the dialogue between Timothy F. Murphy and Cristina Richie about queer bioethics and queer reproduction in this journal, significant points of the emergent and extremely important discussions on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and queer bioethics are raised. Richie specifies correctly that queer bioethics can either complement or contradict LGBT bioethics and the queer standpoint against heteroconformity and heterofuturity is decisive here. As the field of queer bioethics is such a recent and essential part of consideration for bioethics and as it is still evolving, the objective
