Irreversibility and collapsibility of predictive systems in mental representation: a sensorimotor paradox theory.

In this article, we will discuss the idea that one system cannot be both the observer and the agent of motor action at the same time. In that sense, the model of sensory prediction is somewhat biased, as it would suggest that a system would be able to observe its own action from a fixed viewpoint. We will argue that on a perceptual level, efferent and afferent signals cannot coexist simultaneously, at least as far as the point of the body leading the action is concerned. Triggering motor action activates available sensorimotor memory which a system adheres to completely. This adherence constit

Ideal Weyl semimetal states with point Fermi surfaces in Cu2SnSe3series compounds.

In most Weyl semimetals (WSMs), the Weyl nodes lie away from the Fermi energy and their Weyl cones are often obscured by the extended Fermi surfaces, suppressing hallmark Weyl phenomena. Here, we propose a mechanism for realizing ideal WSMs: a class of semiconductors can undergo a transition into ideal WSM via bandgap closing. This transition can be driven by chemical doping, which modulates the band gap and enhances spin-orbit coupling, leading to linear crossing between the valence and conduction bands and triggering the topological phase transition. Using first-principles calculations, we d

Neural control of on-line guidance of hand reaching movements.

Orienting one's gaze towards a peripheral target is usually composed of a hypometric primary saccade followed by a secondary 'corrective saccade' triggered automatically (without conscious perception) by the retinal error at the end of the primary saccade and characterised by a short latency. Due to visual suppression during the saccade, the artificial introduction of a random small target jump during that short period remains undetected and triggers after the end of the primary saccade a normal 'corrective saccade'. As a result this procedure simulates an error in the planning of the primary

Fasciculations and their F-response. Localisation of their axonal origin.

A fasciculation with an axonal origin may be followed by its own F-response. The time-lapse between these 2 potentials corresponds to the time for the antidromic wave to travel to the alpha-cell and to return to the trigger-point. This relatively stable interval may be compared with the difference between the latencies of the F- and M-responses of the same muscle evoked by distal nerve stimulation. This permits one to localise the origin of the fasciculation on the axon. This method showed that, of 201 fasciculations followed by their F-response, obtained in normal controls and in neurological

Converging and Differential Brain Phospholipid Dysregulation in the Pathogenesis of Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Alzheimer's Disease.

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) is a major epigenetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The precise nature of how rmTBI leads to or precipitates AD pathology is currently unknown. Numerous neurological conditions have shown an important role for dysfunctional phospholipid metabolism as a driving factor for the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the precise role in rmTBI and AD remains elusive. We hypothesized that a detailed phospholipid characterization would reveal profiles of response to injury in TBI that overlap with age-dependent changes in AD and

Neuroinflammation: implications for the pathogenesis and molecular diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

During the past few years, an increasing set of evidence has supported the major role of deregulation of the interaction patterns between glial cells and neurons in the pathway toward neuronal degeneration. Neurons and glial cells, together with brain vessels, constitute an integrated system for brain function. Inflammation is a process related with the onset of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several hypotheses have been postulated to explain the pathogenesis of AD, but none provides insight into the early events that trigger metabolic and cellular alt

Risk of radiation-induced skin injury in patients undergoing SIRT: Evaluation of trigger levels for radiation protection.

INTRODUCTION: Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) is a fluoroscopically-guided interventional procedure used in the treatment of primary and secondary hepatic tumors. This study evaluated the potential risk of radiation-induced skin injury in patients undergoing both the pre-SIRT work-up and the therapeutic administration, by assessing whether international trigger levels were exceeded for cumulative air kerma (Ka,r), defined as the air kerma measured at the patient entrance reference point. If trigger levels are exceeded, future checks are activated for patients. METHODS: We retrospe

Optimizing lower extremity CT angiography: A prospective study of individualized vs. fixed post-trigger delays in bolus tracking.

PURPOSE: To compare the contrast media opacification and diagnostic quality in lower-extremity runoff CT angiography (CTA) between bolus-tracking using conventional fixed trigger delay and patient-specific individualized post-trigger delay. METHODS: In this prospective study, lower-extremity runoff CTA was performed in two cohorts, using either fixed or individualized trigger delay. Both cohorts had identical CT protocols, contrast media applications, and image reconstructions. Objective image quality (mean contrast opacification in HU), and subjective image quality (5-point Likert-scale), we

A Comprehensive Review of the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management of Postmastectomy Pain Syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Postmastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS) remains poorly defined, although it is applied to chronic neuropathic pain following surgical procedures of the breast, including mastectomy and lumpectomy in breast-conserving surgery. It is characterized by persistent pain affecting the anterior thorax, axilla, and/or medial upper arm following mastectomy or lumpectomy. Though the onset of pain is most likely to occur after surgery, there may also be a new onset of symptoms following adjuvant therapy, including chemotherapy or radiation therapy. RECENT FINDINGS: The underlying pathophys

Presentation, aetiology and treatment of adult intussusception in a tertiary Sub-Saharan hospital: a 10-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Adult intussusception is a rare clinical condition worldwide. It contributes to less than 5% of all cases of intussusception. Few studies have been conducted in low-income countries compared to high-income countries; particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Based on anecdotal evidence, the authors hypothesized that the condition is not as rare in a Sub-Saharan setting in comparison with western countries. We set out to conduct the first review study of adult intussusception in Uganda. METHODS: The medical records of 37 (out of a total of 62 cases) adolescent and adult patients with a post

Optimizing coronary CT angiography in patients with delayed contrast arrival using a free-breathing, high-threshold bolus-tracking protocol.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the performance of a free-breathing coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) protocol using a high-threshold bolus-tracking strategy in improving coronary enhancement and diagnostic visualization in patients with delayed contrast arrival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 159 patients undergoing CCTA were randomized to either a conventional bolus-tracking protocol (breath-hold, 100 HU trigger threshold, 6.8 s delay) or a modified high-threshold protocol (free-breathing, 300 HU trigger threshold, 2 s delay). Patients were stratified according to

Risk factor analysis of iodinated contrast medium-related hypersensitivity reactions.

Hypersensitivity reactions caused by iodinated contrast media (ICM) are by definition type B adverse reactions and therefore, they are not predictable. To partially limit this uncertainty, since the 1980s, risk factors have been defined and published. Currently, there are so many risks that any patient undergoing a contrast-enhanced imaging examination would have at least one risk. This is not helpful and instead leads to uncertainty again. From both studies and clinical experience, we know that only a small percentage of patients develop hypersensitivity reactions after ICM administration. Th

Dry needling as an adjunct treatment to multimodal rehabilitation protocol following rotator cuff repair surgery: a preliminary, randomized sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair (RCR) is one of the most prevalent procedures to manage rotator cuff tears (RCT). Postoperative shoulder pain is a common complication following RCR and may be aggravated by activation of myofascial trigger points (MTrP) associated with the injury to the soft tissues surrounding the surgical incision. This study aimed to describe a preliminary, randomized, sham-controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing 4 sessions of myofascial trigger point dry needling (MTrP-DN) as a muscle treatment approach along with 10 sessions of multimodal rehabilitat…

[Effect of moxibustion on the expression of microglia and brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein in the spinal cord of rats with myofascial pain syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of moxibustion at myofascial trigger points on microglia activation and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the spinal cord of rats with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), so as to explore the central mechanism of the analgesic effect of moxibustion. METHODS: Twenty-four male SD rats were randomly divi-ded into control, model and moxibustion groups (n=8 in each group). The MPS model was established by strinking on fascia musculares and eccentric exercise. Rats in the moxibustion group were treated with mild moxibustion at myofascial trig…

Multi-omics analysis reveals the influence of genetic and environmental risk factors on developing gut microbiota in infants at risk of celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune digestive disorder that occurs in genetically susceptible individuals in response to ingesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. Research shows that genetic predisposition and exposure to gluten are necessary but not sufficient to trigger the development of CD. This suggests that exposure to other environmental stimuli early in life, e.g., cesarean section delivery and exposure to antibiotics or formula feeding, may also play a key role in CD pathogenesis through yet unknown mechanisms. Here, we use multi-omics analysis to inves

The Unbearable Weight on Your Mind: The Physiological Dimension of Body Image Disturbances.

The ideal body, according to Western society's standards of physical appearance, has become increasingly thinner. Body image disturbances, a phenomenon often associated with today's society's standards of thinness, are common among obese and eating-disordered subjects, and have recently been documented in normal weight subjects. The aim of this review is to propose a new biological interpretation of body image disturbances, not presenting them as a mere consequence of society's pressure to be thin, but as a result of body weight regulation. Early in life, a "set-point-related body image" that

Torsade de pointes. Mechanisms and management.

Torsade de pointes is a polymorphic ventricular tachycardia showing a peculiar electrocardiographic pattern characterised by a continuous twisting in QRS axis around an imaginary baseline. An abnormally prolonged QT interval is actually associated with torsade de pointes and it is constantly observed in the sinus beats preceding the onset of the arrhythmic event. Prolongation of ventricular repolarisation associated with the development of torsade de pointes can be observed in many clinical conditions, commonly referred to as prolonged QT syndromes, which can be divided into two major groups:

Acupuncture inhibits cue-induced heroin craving and brain activation.

Previous research using functional MRI has shown that specific brain regions associated with drug dependence and cue-elicited heroin craving are activated by environmental cues. Craving is an important trigger of heroin relapse, and acupuncture may inhibit craving. In this study, we performed functional MRI in heroin addicts and control subjects. We compared differences in brain activation between the two groups during heroin cue exposure, heroin cue exposure plus acupuncture at the Zusanli point (ST36) without twirling of the needle, and heroin cue exposure plus acupuncture at the Zusanli poi
