Selective obliteration of the testicular vein as a treatment for varicocele is described in 51 patients. Twenty-five patients had a history of infertility. A coaxial catheter-balloon catheter system was used. The procedure was done on an outpatient basis. The complications and success rates are comparable to postoperative results. Four of the 25 patients whose primary indication for the procedure was infertility have fathered children.

The varicoceles of 39 men of proven fertility and 57 husbands of infertile marriages were assessed by the Doppler technique and classified according to venous activity. Retrograde left renal venography in 17 subjects showed that Doppler grading was unable to distinguish between 7 patients with competent internal spermatic veins and 10 with internal spermatic vein reflux. Catecholamine concentrations were determined in left spermatic vein blood of 18 patients with varicocele. These values were compared with concentrations of catecholamines in the right femoral vein.
