Auditory and vestibular defects induced by experimental labyrinthitis following herpes simplex virus in mice.

CONCLUSION: Our herpes simplex virus (HSV) labyrinthitis mouse model suggests that HSV infection induces vestibular neuritis and sudden deafness. OBJECTIVE: Viral labyrinthitis has been postulated to play a role in vestibular neuritis and sudden deafness. We established a mouse model to investigate the pathogenesis of HSV-induced labyrinthitis. The relationship between HSV infection and apoptosis in the labyrinth was assessed. METHODS: HSV types 1 and 2 were inoculated into the middle ear of mice, and the function of the cochlear and vestibular nerves was assessed. Histopathological changes

Caloric stimulation-induced augmentation of H-reflexes in normal subjects, but not in spinal cord-injured patients.

This study examined the effects of ice water caloric stimulation on H-reflex amplitude in normal subjects and three complete spinal cord-injured patients. H-reflexes were obtained by stimulating the tibial nerve at the popliteal fossa and recording the H-response from the gastrocnemius muscle. All normal subjects who experienced nystagmus or vertigo demonstrated significant augmentation in H-reflex amplitude with ice water irrigation of the ear canal. In the three spinal cord-injured patients, there was no significant change of H-reflex with the ice water stimulus. The results suggest that des

[Posterior fossa infarct misdiagnosed as acute peripheral vestibulopathy].

Patients with acute central vestibular syndrome (AVS) can mimic acute peripheral vestibulopathy, which can mislead to a diagnosis of posterior fossa infarcts. Delayed diagnosis will prevent relevant treatment and may lead to severe disability and in worst case death. Understanding of AVS is extremely relevant for physicians in hospital and prehospital care to insure the right treatment. I this case report of a 35-year-old male patient with AVS the correct diagnosis was made relatively late.

Postural stability in a population of dancers, healthy non-dancers, and vestibular neuritis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have indicated better balance control in dancers than in control participants, but some controversy remains. The aim of our study is to evaluate the postural stability in a cohort of dancers, non-dancers, compensated, and non-compensated unilateral vestibular neuritis (VN). METHODS: This is a prospective study of control subjects, dancers, and VN patients between June 2009 and December 2015. Dancers from the Dance Conservatory of Madrid and VN patients were referred to our department for analysis. After the clinical history, neuro-otological examination, audiogra

Idiopathic benign paroxysmal vertigo in children, a migraine precursor.

Vertigo and dizziness are common conditions in the adult population that can be rarely seen during childhood; only a few articles describing vertigo in children can be found in literature. Although many causes of vertigo in adulthood occur also in childhood, their frequency may be different. A typical example is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, the most common peripheral vestibular disorder in adults, which occurs quite uncommonly in children. Furthermore, many common diseases causing vertigo in children may be unique for this population, such as benign paroxysmal vertigo (BPV) of childho

Effectiveness of careful bedside examination in assessment, diagnosis, and prognosis of vestibular neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of 4 bedside tests (head-impulse, head-heave, head-shake, and vibration tests) can be as effective as the caloric test, a widely accepted standard, in the diagnosis and prediction of the time to recovery from vestibular neuritis. DESIGN: Inception cohort (1-year follow-up), criterion standard study. SETTING: Primary referral center. PATIENTS: All patients had acute vertigo, and those having a diagnosis of vestibular neuritis were eligible for inclusion in the study. Sixty-eight patients (43 men and 25 women; mean age, 54.9 years) met this criterion, a

Cerebellar unipolar brush cells are targets of primary vestibular afferents: an experimental study in the gerbil.

The unipolar brush cell (UBC) is an excitatory glutamatergic interneuron, situated in the cerebellar granular layer, that itself receives excitatory synaptic input on its dendritic brush from a single mossy fiber terminal in the form of a giant glutamatergic synapse. The UBC axon branches within the granular layer, giving rise to large terminals that synapse with both granule cell and UBC dendrites within glomeruli and resemble in morphological and functional terms those formed by extrinsic mossy fibers. So far, the only demonstrated extrinsic afferents to the UBC are the choline acetyltransfe

The incidence of fibrosis in the vestibular ganglia in Menière's disease.

The vestibular ganglia in 11 temporal bones from subjects with known premortem unilateral Meniere's disease were studied for evidence of increased fibrosis. Tissue sections were treated with Gomori's trichrome stain and were examined independently by each of seven persons experienced in histological study. The averaged ratings for the amount of fibrous tissue in the vestibular ganglia showed no significant differences for ears with Meniere's disease, the opposite uninvolved ears, and the controls.

Spontaneous and driven responses of semicircular canal primary afferents in the unanesthetized pigeon.

Spontaneous activity from 120 vestibular semicircular canal (SC) primary afferents and driven responses from 20 SC primary afferents to 2.3-decade bandwidth (0.029-6.152 Hz) sum of sinusoidal angular rotations were characterized in 10 unanesthetized pigeons. The results were compared with those previously gathered from barbiturate anesthetized pigeons. The average spontaneous mean firing rate (MFR) of SC primary afferents in unanesthetized pigeons was found to be 168 impulses per second (I/s), n = 120, and is approximately 80% higher than that for SC primary afferents in anesthetized pigeons [

The fine structure of acoustic ganglia in the rat.

Nerve cell bodies in the spiral and vestibular ganglia of the adult rat are surrounded by thin (about ten lamellae) myelin sheaths which differ in several respects from typical axonal myelin. In some instances lamellae surrounding perikarya appear as typical major dense lines, and in others as thin Schwann cell sheets in which cytoplasm persists. Discontinuities and irregularities appear in the structure of perikaryal myelin. Lamellae may terminate anywhere within the sheaths; they may bifurcate; they may reverse their direction; or they may merge with each other. The number of lamellae varies

[Neurologic symptoms in relation to hypothyroidism in the dog: review of the literature and case reports].

Primary hypothyroidism is commonly associated with lethargy, alopecia, hyperpigmentation, alterations in skin and hair coat, anestrus and bradycardia. However, there is also a neurological manifestation of hypothyroidism with neuromuscular signs. Four dogs with generalized polyneuropathy are described. Two dogs had peripheral vestibular signs, two other lower motor neuron disease with megaesophagus. Diagnosis was based on neurological examination, TSH-stimulation test and electrodiagnostic findings including electromyography, motor nerve conduction velocity and brainstem evoked potentials. On

Human vestibular nerve morphology and labyrinthectomy.

Surgical labyrinthectomy leads to extensive and degenerative changes in the membranous labyrinth and is often followed by fibrosis and ossification of the vestibule and neuroma formation. After labyrinthectomy the distal processes of the vestibular nerve degenerate, but the nerve trunk within the internal auditory canal, including Scarpa's ganglion, does not show an obvious loss of neurons. Electron microscopic examination of the cells of Scarpa's ganglion revealed many changes similar to those of chromatolysis, indicating increased cell metabolism and probable regenerative changes. Many nerve

[RFC1 CANVAS/Spectrum Disorder: Historical Details and Clinical Diversity].

Cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) refers to a multi-system neurodegenerative disorder, with middle-age onset, which mainly presents with progressive imbalance. Imbalance is attributable to isolated or combined impairment of the cerebellar, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems. Chronic spasmodic cough, which usually precedes neurological symptoms, serves as a useful diagnostic clue to CANVAS. Diagnostic criteria have been proposed for CANVAS in 2016, based on 3 cardinal features. In 2019, a biallelic intronic AAGGG repeat expansion (AAGGG)exp in the

Temporal bone histopathology in MELAS syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Describe the histopathology of the temporal bones in MELAS (myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes) syndrome. The syndrome results from a known point mutation in mitochondrial DNA. METHODS: Histopathology analysis of a pair of temporal bones from the oldest surviving MELAS syndrome temporal bone donor. Histopathologic findings were correlated with known premortem clinical data. RESULTS: The inner ears showed severe but incomplete atrophy of the stria vascularis for the length of the cochleae. In contrast, the organ of Corti and inner hair cells appear

Postural stability in vestibular neuritis: age, disease duration, and residual vestibular function.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To assess the influence of factors that can affect postural instability in vestibular neuritis (VN). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective data collection study. METHODS: Foam posturography was performed in 58 VN patients. We examined six variables: the velocity of movement of the center of pressure and the envelopment area in eyes closed/foam rubber condition, Romberg's ratios of velocity and area with foam rubber, and the foam ratios of velocity and area with eyes closed. Multiple regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship between these variables and the fo
