INTRODUCTION: The most common histopathological finding in Ménière's disease (MD) is endolymphatic hydrops (EH), which involves the dilation of the membranous labyrinth. The direct relationship between EH and MD is debated, although EH plays a crucial role in auditory and vestibular functional tests. MRI sequences such as 3D-FLAIR and 3D-real-IR are used to study EH, with the latter being more effective. This study aimed to examine whether the severity of EH detected by MRI is always more pronounced in the cochlea than in the vestibule, indicating a cochleocentric progression of the condition.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial schwannomas are most commonly associated with the vestibulocochlear nerve, often leading to hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular dysfunction. Much less often, a schwannoma can arise from the trigeminal nerve which can lead to facial pain, numbness, and weakness.
PURPOSE: We explored a case of a patient with an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed trigeminal schwannoma that was mistaken for a vestibulocochlear schwannoma because of a myriad of ipsilateral vestibulocochlear symptoms.
RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a retrospective chart review and case study, with no

High resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) and computed tomography (HR-CT) of the inner ear are becoming more important for the diagnosis of peripheral vestibular lesions. Modern HR-MRI techniques allow visualization of detailed anatomic features of the vestibulo-cochlear regions as well as pathologic findings in the inner ear such as, neoplastic lesions (e.g., small intracanalicular acoustic neuromas), anomalies causing vertigo and hearing loss (e.g. Mondini's-malformation, perilymph fistula, vestibular paroxysmia), and inflammatory diseases (e.g., Cogan's syndrome, labyrinthitis, zo

Animal experiments show that intoxication with hydrocarbon solvents influences the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex arc and indicate that the solvents block the inhibition of the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex presumably exerted by the cerebellum. The blood concentrations necessary to elicit oculomotor disturbances in animals were smaller than those that disturbed the vestibular function. Accordingly, in human experiments styrene and toluene exposure did not elicit any positional nystagmus but caused an increased saccade speed and a diminished visual suppression of vestibular nystagmus. Some cerebella

Recurrent vestibulopathy is defined as an illness of unknown cause characterized by more than a single episode of vertigo of duration characteristic of that occurring with hydrops but without auditory or clinical neurological symptoms or signs. Eighty-six patients with this condition were diagnosed in the Dizziness Unit, and data on age and sex distribution, natural history and caloric pattern are presented. On follow-up of mean duration 3.5 year, 6 cases evolved to classic Ménière's disease, and 4 to benign positional vertigo, but none developed brain disease. The prognosis regarding vertigo

In the past two decades, we have seen a great increase in the number of injuries from commercial and sport diving. During this time, our knowledge of the physiology and pathophysiology of diving has also increased. As a result, we now can accurately diagnose and successfully treat many of these injuries. Of the commercial and sport divers examined as pateints in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Tex., between September, 1974, and May, 1975, 11 showed positive otologic and otoneurologic findings which are reported herein. One patient was su

OBJECTIVE: To measure the outcomes of laser treatment of cholesteatoma covering cochlear and vestibular fistulas.
METHODS: Cholesteatoma matrix over the fistula was denatured; the power density was sufficient only to gradually heat, but not vaporise, the keratin-forming matrix. The denaturing speed was controlled so that the integrity of the fistula cover was maintained. The change in bone conduction threshold and the residual rate of cholesteatoma at the fistula were measured.
RESULTS: Thirty-six fistulas were assessed. There were seven cochlear fistulas. All were 5 mm or less in maximum le

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A third window in the vestibular apparatus has been investigated in both animals and humans, specifically in superior semicircular canal dehiscence. There are as yet no animal model studies of the effect of a third vestibular window of the posterior semicircular canal.
STUDY DESIGN: Original basic research study.
METHODS: A fenestration was drilled in the bony labyrinth over the posterior semicircular canal, preserving the membranous labyrinth, in seven healthy, 6-month-old, fat sand rats (total 10 ears). Auditory brain stem responses to low- and high-frequency acousti

Traumatic perilymphatic fistula due to luxation of the stapes into the vestibule caused by an earpick is an extremely rare situation. In order to treat such an injury, it is necessary to evaluate the extent of the damage and the actual condition of the middle and inner ear. However, it is difficult to obtain such precise information about the condition of the stapes prior to performing surgery. We report on a case of a traumatic perilymphatic fistula with luxation of the stapes into the vestibule that was diagnosed using multislice CT (MSCT). MSCT clearly demonstrated the presence of air in th
