Noise and hand-arm vibration exposure in relation to the risk of hearing loss.

The aim of this study was to examine the possible association of combined exposure of noise and hand-arm vibration (HAV) and the risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Workers in a heavy engineering industry were part of a dynamic cohort. Of these workers, 189 had HAV exposure, and their age and hearing status were recorded in the same year and were, therefore, included in the analysis. Data on HAV duration and acceleration was gathered through questionnaires, observations, and measurements. All available audiograms were categorized into normal and hearing loss. The first exposure variable includ…

Adhesion of a monolayer of fibroblast cells to fibronectin under sonic vibrations in a bioreactor.

OBJECTIVES: We examined cell adhesion to a surface under vibrational forces approximating those of phonation. METHODS: A monolayer of human fibroblast cells was seeded on a fibronectin-coated glass coverslip, which was attached to either the rotating part or the stationary part of a rheometer-bioreactor. The temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide level, nutrients, and cell seeding density were controlled. The cell density was on the order of 1,000 to 5,000 cells per square millimeter. Target stresses above 1 kPa at an oscillatory frequency of 100 Hz were chosen to reflect conditions of vocal f…

Whole-body vibration: is there a causal relationship to specific imaging findings of the spine?

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review of the available literature for those studies that evaluated the role of whole-body vibration (WBV) on the spine, using imaging modalities as well as an estimation of WBV exposure. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Numerous comparative studies have reported a possible association between the occurrence of spinal symptoms and exposure to WBV. These exposures have commonly been examined in the work environment largely through self-reported questionnaires only. From a scientific perspective, the majority of studies emphasize s…

A microfluidic vibrating wire viscometer for operation at high pressure and high temperature.

This article discusses a microfluidic vibrating wire viscometer with an internal volume of a few microliters. Accuracy of order ±10% for viscosities ranging from 0.1 to 100 cP is demonstrated for temperatures (10 °C-175 °C) and pressures (10-24,000 psi) suitable for oilfield use by prior calibration in air and toluene. Comparison between multiple data sets indicates that a large fraction of the discrepancy between literature values is systematic, indicating that future refinements may be possible with better interpretation. Confinement effects are evaluated and are not found to play a signific

Vibrational relaxation pathways of AI and AII modes in N-methylacetamide clusters.

We studied the pathways of vibrational energy relaxation of the amide I (~1660 cm⁻¹) and amide II (~1560 cm⁻¹) vibrational modes of N-methylacetamide (NMA) in CCl₄ solution using two-color femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy. We measured the transient spectral dynamics upon excitation of each of these amide modes. The results show that there is no energy transfer between the amide I (AI) and amide II (AII) modes. Instead we find that the vibrational energy is transferred on a picosecond time scale to a common combination tone of lower-frequency modes. By use of polarization-resolved femtoseco…

Vibrational spectral assignments of paraldehyde by ab initio and density functional methods.

The FTIR and Laser-Raman spectra of paraldehyde have been recorded in the regions 4000-400 cm(-1) and 3500-250 cm(-1) respectively. Molecular electronic energy, geometrical structure, harmonic vibrational spectra, infrared intensities and Raman scattering activities have been computed at the HF/6-31G(d,p) and B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) levels of theory. The results were compared with experimental values with the help of scaling procedures. The observed wave numbers in FTIR and Laser-Raman spectra were analyzed and assigned to different normal modes of the molecule. Most of the modes have wave numbers in…

Three-dimensional finite element simulations of the dynamic response of a fingertip to vibration.

Although excessive dynamic deformation of the soft tissues in the fingertip under vibration loading is thought to induce hand-arm vibration syndrome, the in vivo distributions of the dynamic stress/strain of the tissues in the fingertip under vibration conditions have not been studied because they cannot be measured experimentally. In the present study, we analyzed the dynamic responses of a fingertip to vibrations by extending our previously proposed three-dimensional finite element (FE) model. The FE model of the fingertip contains the essential anatomical structures of a finger, such as ski…

Ultrafast electronic and vibrational energy relaxation of Fe(acetylacetonate)3 in solution.

Transient mid-infrared spectroscopy is used to probe the dynamics initiated by excitation of ligand-to-metal (400 nm) and metal-to-ligand (3 … ersion of the initially excited charge transfer states to the ligand field manifold, and subsequent vibrational cooling on the lowest ligand field excited state prior to electronic conversion to the ground state. The analysis of time dependent bandwidths and positions of the transient absorptions provides some evidence of mode specific vibrational cooling.

Aerodynamically and acoustically driven modes of vibration in a physical model of the vocal folds.

In a single-layered, isotropic, physical model of the vocal folds, distinct phonation types were identified based on the medial surface dynamics of the vocal fold. For acoustically driven phonation, a single, in-phase, x-10 like eigenmode captured the essential dynamics, and coupled with one of the acoustic resonances of the subglottal tract. Thus, the fundamental frequency appeared to be determined primarily by a subglottal acoustic resonance. In contrast, aerodynamically driven phonation did not naturally appear in the single-layered model, but was facilitated by the introduction of a vertic

The effects of vibration on the baseline spike activity of neurons in the superior vestibular nucleus.

The characteristics of the baseline spike activity of neurons in the superior vestibular nucleus of rats were studied after exposure to vibration for five, 10, and 15 days using a computerized method for recording and analyzing interspike intervals. The distributions of neurons in terms of their regularity, their dynamic types, and the modalities of their interspike interval histograms were assessed. In intact animals, the mean spike frequency was 14.0 +/- 1.4 Hz. Changes in the main measures were seen at different durations of exposure to vibration, along with a significant increase in the me…

Theoretical studies on vibrational spectra of some halides of Group IIB elements.

The vibrational spectra of Group IIB elements halides MX2 and their dimers M2X4 (M=Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II); X=F, Cl, Br and I) have been systematically investigated by ab initio RHF and B3LYP methods with LanL2MB, LanL2DZ and SDD basis sets. The optimized geometries, calculated vibrational frequencies are evaluated via comparison with the experimental data. The vibrational frequencies, calculated by these methods with different basis sets, are compared to each other too. The best results can be obtained by RHF/SDD method, with this method, the deviations for MX2 and Hg2X4 are <7%. Some vibra…

Behavioural measurement of level-dependent shifts in the vibration pattern on the basilar membrane.

Physiological data suggest that the travelling wave on the basilar membrane evoked by a sinusoid of fixed frequency moves towards the base with increasing level. We describe two psychoacoustic experiments that attempted to provide evidence for and quantify the extent of such a shift in humans. In experiment 1, masking patterns were measured in forward masking using a fixed 6-kHz tone presented at 65 or 85 dB sound pressure level. The threshold for detecting a brief sinusoidal signal was measured as a function of signal frequency for several time delays of the signal relative to the end of the
