A 33-year-old woman presented with visual field defects. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a pituitary tumor with suprasellar extension. The tumor was partially removed by trans-sphenoidal surgery. Histologically, the tumor was composed of fascicles of spindle cells which were immunohistochemically positive for S-100 protein, Galectin-3, vimentin and EMA. Based on the morphology and immunostaining pattern, diagnosis of folliculostellate cell tumor in the pituitary gland was given.

A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the penis in a 56-year-old Hispanic man is described. The tumor was composed of a proliferation of atypical spindle cells showing the characteristic storiform growth pattern. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for vimentin and alpha-1-antichymotrypsin and negative for keratin, desmin, and S-100 protein antibodies. The unusual location of this tumor in our patient highlights the ubiquitous distribution of this malignant neoplasm. The clinical and histologic differential diagnosis of this lesion is discussed.

The aim of the present study was to test the possibility of different antigens detection in the biological objects after their storage in methylsalicylate for two or more years before embedding in paraffin, using routine immunocytochemical methods. Using immunocytochemical reactions demostrating intermediate filaments nestin, vimentin, and GFAP, as well as neuronal markers NeuN, neuron-specific enolase, and doublecortin, as the examples, it was shown that long-term storage in methylsalicylate does not prevent immunocytochemical detection of these antigens.

The clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of four cases of primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the central nervous system were investigated. Three patients died. All cases showed vimentin-positive cells with the morphology of neoplastic cells and one case showed glial fibrillary acidic protein, neuron-specific enolase and neurofilament protein-positive cell. The present study indicates that this group of tumors have bad prognostics and may show immunocytochemical features indicating glial and/or neuronal differentiation.
