Macromineral nutrition by heat stress interactions in dairy cattle: review and original research.

This paper examines whether or not responses of dairy cattle to various dietary macromineral elements differed in hot weather compared with thermoneutral conditions. The consequences of heat stress and the interrelationships of macromineral elements on feed intake, digestive function, use of dietary buffers, mineral element uptake from the portal-drained viscera, perturbation of acid-base physiology and related mineral element nutrition, effects of dietary macromineral element concentrations on lactational performance as affected by season, and influence of mineral elements in drinking water a…

Following the flow: in vivo imaging of fetal foramen ovale physiology using four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging with doppler ultrasound gating.

The foramen ovale (FO) is a vital conduit of the fetal circulation, directing oxygenated blood from the placenta through the right atrium to the left atrium and thus to the brain and viscera. Due to technical limitations, quantification of flow across the foramen ovale is typically estimated using indirect measurements of prenatal echocardiography. We present a case of a healthy human fetus at 32 weeks of gestation, visualized via Doppler ultrasound-gated 4D flow MRI. Caval blood flow through the foramen ovale was distinctly observed and delineated without using contrast agents, anesthesia, or…

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in Situs Inversus Totalis: A Case Report.

Situs inversus totalis is a rare condition characterized by the mirror image of the normal abdominal and thoracic viscera. Since the gallbladder is located in the left upper quadrant in this subset of patients, the diagnosis of symptomatic cholelithiasis poses a difficulty. Similarly, laparoscopic cholecystectomy in these patients is more demanding and presents technical challenges, especially for right-handed surgeons. Herein, we report a case of a 30-year-old female who was a known case of situs inversus totalis and was diagnosed with symptomatic cholelithiasis and subsequently underwent lap…

Biliary stone in patient with situs inversus totalis.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Situs inversus totalis is characterized by the complete transposition of thoracic and abdominal viscera. Individuals can live asymptomatically with this condition; however, it may be associated with certain abnormalities of the organs involved. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a case of a situs inversus totalis woman presented with choledocholithiasis. Elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed on the patient with intraoperative modifications. The patient was discharged in a healthy condition. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Several case reports have documen…

In vitro models for investigation of the host-parasite interface - possible applications in acute Chagas disease.

Chagas disease (CD), caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is the main parasitic disease in the Western Hemisphere, with an increasing number of cases, especially in non-endemic regions. The disease is characterized by cardiomegaly and mega viscera, nevertheless, the clinical outcome is hard to predict, underscoring the need for further research into the pathophysiology of CD. Even though most basic and translational research involving CD is performed using in vivo models, in vitro models arise as an ethical, rapidly evolving, and physiologically relevant alternative for CD research. In the present rev…

Bowel Obstruction and Peritoneal Dialysis: A Case Report of a Patient with Complications from a Broad Ligament Hernia.

Abdominal hernias are a common cause of bowel obstruction. The major types of abdominal hernias are external or abdominal wall hernias, which occur at areas of congenital or acquired weakness in the abdominal wall. An alternative entity is internal hernias, which are characterized by a protrusion of viscera through the peritoneum or mesentery. We herein present the case of a female peritoneal dialysis patient with bowel obstruction due to an internal hernia. Although an initial work-up did not lead to a correct diagnosis, an exploratory laparotomy revealed that she had intestinal herniation du…

[Discussion on acupuncture for flaccid paralysis from "treating flaccid paralysis by yangming alone"].

Theories regarding"treating flaccid paralysis by yangming alone" are summarized, and the treatment effects of "yangming is the sea of five viscera and six organs", "yangming is in charge of smoothing the tendon and muscle, while tendon and muscle is in charge of connecting bones and movement" and "tendon and muscle is the crossing point of yin meridians and yang meridians, which is converged in yangming" are explained. With medical cases from later generations, it is summarized that besides "using yangming alone", "mainly using yang-ming" and "multiple meridians and acupoints" can also be reco…

Laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer and cholecystectomy for patient with situs inversus totalis.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital anomaly presenting with complete transposition of thoracic and abdominal viscera. Laparoscopic surgery for either rectal cancer or gallbladder diseases with SIT is rarely reported in the literature. A 39-year-old woman was admitted to hospital owing to rectal cancer. She was diagnosed with SIT by performing radiography and abdominal computed tomography scan as a routine preoperative investigation. We performed laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer successfully in spite of technical difficulties caused by abnormal anatomy. One year later, she…

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries plus dextrocardia operated with an unusual operative technique.

We describe a case of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries plus dextrocardia and normal anatomical abdominal viscera. Systemic (tricuspid) valve replacement was performed due to moderately severe valve regurgitation. An unusual operative technique was used because of the patient's rare morphology. On cardiopulmonary bypass, the systemic valve was approached via a left atriotomy anterior to the left pulmonary veins, whereby the surgeon was positioned on the patient's left side. As the surgeon had excellent exposure from the opposite side of the table, he was able to perfor…

Cutaneous and lymphadenopathic Kaposi's sarcoma: a case report and review of literature.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) of childhood is an extremely rare and unexplained disease. It is usually associated with immunosuppression and human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) infection. It can involve skin, mucous membranes, lymph nodes and viscera. This investigation describes a case of a 3-year-old boy with cutaneous and lymphangiopathic KS. Initially, the patient presented with cutaneous lesions of KS behind the right ear. Two months later, the disease disseminated not only cutaneously but also to the cervical, axillary and inguinal lymph nodes. Immunological evaluation showed severe lymphocytopenia but…

Surgical management of deep venous insufficiency caused by congenital absence of the infrarenal inferior vena cava.

Congenital absence of the inferior vena cava (CAIVC) is a rare vascular defect, commonly reported as a fortuitous finding because patients are typically asymptomatic of the condition itself but are symptomatic of associated conditions such as congenital heart disease, polysplenia, asplenia, and inversion of bowel viscera. The presence of CAIVC is probably underestimated because CAIVC may not be detected by compression B-mode ultrasonography. By use of computed tomography, we diagnosed a case of CAIVC in a young athletic patient with disabling venous stasis symptoms of the lower limbs. Venous p…

Intracranial anatomic asymmetry in situs inversus totalis.

Situs inversus is a rare condition in which the position of the thoracic and the abdominal viscera are exchanged from the left to the right sides. A possible inversion of normal dominant intracranial anatomy, has however, rarely been discussed. We examine here the gross anatomy of an elderly cadaveric female for a possible "situs inversus" of the intracranial contents. This study has found that many structures commonly dominant on one side in the intracranial compartment were reversed in this specimen. These findings support the concept that a reversal of more commonly found intracranial anato…

Background and history of the interface between anxiety and vertigo.

The comorbidity of vertigo and anxiety has been an integral component of the medical literature since antiquity. In the works of Plato, the same terms were used in the context of vertigo, inebriation, height vertigo, disorientation, and mental confusion. In classical medicine, vertigo had the ambiguous status of being both a disease per se and a symptom of other diseases such as hypochondriacal melancholy. Further, two etiologies were described for vertigo: an origin in the head (brain) and an origin in the hypochondria (abdominal viscera). In the course of the development of a detailed neurol…

Taenia saginata asiatica: epidemiology, infection, immunological and molecular studies.

The taeniasis in East Asia has a special epidemiological pattern: people eat meat and/or viscera of pigs and acquire infection of Taenia saginata-like tapeworms. However, cysticercosis is more often found in pigs than cattles. In order to elucidate the taxonomic status of this parasite, we have conducted extensive field surveys, experimental infections, and morphological as well as immunological studies since 1981. After obtaining sufficient information from our studies, we finally came to the conclusion that the T. saginata-like tapeworm in Asia is a new subspecies of T. saginata and was name…

Anencephaly, dorsal hypermelia, and duplication of the vertebral column: a rare type of rachipagus conjoined twins.

The rare combination of hypermelia with craniorachischisis and duplication of the vertebral column has been found in three cases, two publis … nd clavicles dorsally without an interposed sternum, and (3) the dorsal location of the rudimentary viscera of the parasite. The orientation of notomelic arms was confirmatory but not diagnostic. The proposed embryologic origin of these twins is presented.

Original oblique sections of the retroperitoneum: radio-anatomic basis.

The authors present oblique sections of the retroperitoneum adapted to the morphology of each patient, which affects both the liver and the organisation of the retroperitoneum. This original method involve two incidences for studying the left and right retroperitoneum separately with vertical sectional planes. The authors postulate that the orientation of the retroperitoneal viscera depends on the degree of hepatic development, so these incidences are chosen with reference to axial sections of the portal bifurcation and the middle hepatic v.: the two vascular landmarks of the liver. Anatomic a…

Case report on situs inversus totalis in two Sprague-Dawley rats.

We macro- and microscopically examined two cases of congenital visceral transposition (situs inversus totalis) in SD rats. We also investigated the possibility of situs inversus in association with immotile-cilia syndrome. The rats had grown normally with no clinical signs of disease. Although all organs including the vascular system were located opposite to the normal position and displayed a mirror image on macroscopic observation, no abnormality was found in any of the organs on microscopic examination. Electron-microscopic observation revealed in neither animal any structural abnormalities…

Reye's syndrome in a young adult.

Reye's syndrome (RS), originally known by the more descriptive name "encephalopathy with fatty degeneration of the viscera," was first described in children and is still seen mostly in them. However, there have been a few case reports of adult Reye's Syndrome (ARS) since the mid-1970s. The following report is a case of ARS in a previously healthy 26-year-old woman. Although the clinical description and the pathophysiology are well known in RS, the etiology and the pathogenesis are still far from clear. From available evidence a multifactorial cause seems likely, encompassing genetic susceptibi…
