TAMOXIFEN RETINOPATHY DURING TREATMENT OF AN INOPERABLE DESMOID TUMOR.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical significance and rarity of tamoxifen retinopathy after a long-term tamoxifen treatment for an inoperable desmoid tumor. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: Tamoxifen retinopathy is a condition rarely observed in clinical practice. Although tamoxifen is typically a treatment for breast cancer patients, we present a 68-year-old woman taking tamoxifen for an inoperable desmoid tumor, an equally rare condition. She presented with bilaterally deteriorating vision over the course of a year. Fundoscopic examination revealed parafoveal deposits bilaterally. Spectral doma

CT Features of Posttraumatic Vision Loss.

Clinical evaluation of patients with trauma is challenging, especially in the presence of neurologic injuries. Vision loss after trauma is a harmful and usually overlooked consequence that may be avoided with a prompt and accurate intervention. Head CT is commonly performed in patients with trauma. However, radiologists may be unfamiliar with the CT findings associated with injuries that may affect eyesight. Understanding the visual pathway anatomy and its critical landmarks is paramount for recognizing these findings. This article describes the use of head CT to evaluate the visual pathway to

Identification of Novel Mutations in ABCA4 Gene: Clinical and Genetic Analysis of Indian Patients with Stargardt Disease.

Stargardt disease (STGD) is the leading cause of juvenile macular degeneration associated with progressive central vision loss, photophobia, and colour vision abnormalities. In this study, we have described the clinical and genetic features of Stargardt patients from an Indian cohort. The next generation sequencing was carried out in five clinically confirmed unrelated patients and their family members using a gene panel comprising 184 retinal specific genes. Sequencing results were analyzed by read mapping and variant calling in genes of interest, followed by their verification and interpreta

Successful treatment of syphilitic uveitis in HIV-positive patients.

We report successful treatment of syphilitic uveitis in a case series of three Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients at Malaysia's Selayang Hospital eye clinic. All three patients with syphilitic uveitis were male, aged from 23 to 35 years old, with a history of high-risk behaviors. Of the patients, two presented with blurring of vision and only one patient presented with floaters in the affected eye. Ocular examination revealed intermediate uveitis (case 1 and case 3) and panuveitis (case 2). Each patient showed a high Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) titer at presen

Vision-related quality of life in non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disease and a major cause of visual impairment in older adults. Non-neovascular AMD (non-nAMD), the more common phenotype, can substantially impair vision-related quality of life (QoL) even when visual acuity remains relatively preserved. The 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) is the most widely used instrument for assessing vision-related QoL in AMD. However, QoL in non-nAMD has not been systematically synthesised across disease stages and settings. This review aims to summarise vision-relat

Explainable Transformer-Based Framework for Glaucoma Detection from Fundus Images Using Multi-Backbone Segmentation and vCDR-Based Classification.

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by increased intraocular pressure (IOP) that affects the optic nerve head (ONH), leading to vision problems and irreversible blindness. Background/Objectives: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, and the number of people affected is increasing each year, with the number expected to reach 111.8 million by 2040. This escalating trend is alarming due to the lack of ophthalmology specialists relative to the population. This study proposes an explainable end-to-end pipeline for automated glaucoma diagnosis from fundus images. It also evaluat

Hidden dangers: Does multisensory impairments accompanying visual impairment increase dementia risk.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that sensory impairment, particularly in the form of visual impairment, may contribute to the development of dementia. However, it remains unclear whether experiencing concurrent visual impairment in combination with other types of multisensory impairments may further increase this risk. METHODS: The study used data from the UK Biobank cohort study, which recruited 500,000 adults. With meticulous screening procedures in place, individuals with visual impairment, hearing impairment, and oral health issues were identified for further follow-up evaluations.

Comparison of colour contrast sensitivity in eyes at high risk of neovascular age-related macular degeneration with and without subsequent choroidal neovascular membrane development.

BACKGROUND: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is a leading cause of blind registrations in the elderly. Unfortunately, it is difficult to detect the early stage of the disease, when treatment is more likely to be successful. Subjects with very early disease are likely to have abnormal macular function, even in the pre-symptomatic stage. In this study, colour vision was evaluated to establish if subjects at high risk of developing nAMD can be identified, thus allowing earlier diagnosis and possible treatment. METHODS: Colour contrast sensitivity (CCS) was evaluated over time

A survey of the prevalence of refractive errors among children in lower primary schools in Kampala district.

BACKGROUND: Refractive errors are a known cause of visual impairment and may cause blindness worldwide. In children, refractive errors may prevent those afflicted from progressing with their studies. In Uganda, like in many developing countries, there is no established vision-screening programme for children on commencement of school, such that those with early onset of such errors will have many years of poor vision. Over all, there is limited information on refractive errors among children in Africa. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of refractive errors among school children attending

Outcomes of systematic screening for optic pathway tumors in children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Optic pathway tumors (OPT) occur in about 15% of individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) and may effect substantial visual loss. Because their growth is not predictable at the time of discovery, neuroimaging for OPT in asymptomatic NF1 patients remains controversial. We evaluated the outcomes of systematic screening by both MRI and ophthalmic examinations for OPT in young children with NF1 seen at multi-disciplinary clinics for Neurofibromatosis and Genetics at one institution between 1996 and 2001. We report on 84 children who presented with NF1 under age 6 years, of whom 13 children
