OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of dietary folate, vitamin B(6) (VB(6)) and vitamin B(12) (VB(12)) with the risk of coronary heart disease among middle-aged persons.
METHODS: A total of 40,803 subjects aged 40-59 years living in the community who were free of prior diagnoses of cardiovascular disease and cancer and who completed a food frequency questionnaire were followed from 1990-1992 to the end of 2001 in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: While various weight-management approaches produce weight loss, they may differ in dietary quality. We monitored changes in nutrient intakes in overweight and obese subjects on three different weight-management programs.

OBJECTIVES: Mental health disorders are major contributors to disease burden in older people. Deficient status of folate and the metabolically related B vitamins may be implicated in these conditions. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Patients with serum antigastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity may have vitamin B12 deficiency and some oral symptoms. This study assessed the changes of serum GPCA titer in GPCA-positive patients after effective vitamin B12 treatment.
METHODS: Two hundred and ten GPCA-positive oral mucosal disease patients became oral symptom free (complete response) after 1.0-67.1 months of treatment with regular and continuous intramuscular injection of vitamin B12 once per week. METHODS: We examined the clinicopathologic features of 18 consecutive patients with neuropathy caused by folate deficiency who presented with low serum folate levels but normal blood thiamine and serum cobalamin levels in the absence of chronic alcoholism.

AIM: To investigate the effect of vitamin supplements on homocysteine levels in patients with celiac disease.
METHODS: Vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, and fasting plasma homocysteine levels were measured in 51 consecutive adults with celiac disease [median (range) age 56 (18-63) years; 40% men, 26 (51%) had villous atrophy, and 25 (49%) used B-vitamin supplements] and 50 healthy control individuals matched for age and sex. Finally, the C677T polymorphism of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) was evaluated in 46 patients with celiac disease and all control individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Physicians often administer intravenous multivitamins to intoxicated patients in the emergency department (ED); however, this practice is not supported by evidence from any prior study. We determined the prevalences of vitamin deficiencies in patients presenting to our ED with alcohol intoxication.

Non-anemic women attending a public antenatal clinic were given, daily, a multivitamin tablet containing 78 mg. of elemental iron. The follow-up studies included an analysis of their diets.
