Actual nutrition and providing with vitamins C and B1 was studied in boys aged 16-17 years--students of a rural trade school in the town of Volsk, the Saratov region. Although the fuel value of their ration was sufficient (2900-3000 Kcal), the content of animal proteins comprised at an average 42 g/day. The content of ascorbic acid in the ration (evaluated by the analytical method) comprised 48% (in autumn) and 17% (in spring) of the recommended standard; the level of vitamin B1 did not differ depending on the season on the year. In spring, vitamin C and B1 deficiency detected in the students …

This report describes measurements of 50 variables in adult, female, reproductively inactive Vervet monkeys during prolonged nutrition realistic for westernized people. Dietary treatments consisted of an atherogenic Western diet (WD) and a prudent Western diet (PD). Ingredients were normal foods for man and no extra cholesterol was added. Fortification of both diets with vitamin C after cooking was necessary to prevent deficiency. Randomised groups of Vervet monkeys received either the PD or WD for 47 months, while a third group was fed WD for 20 months and then PD for 27 months (WD-PD). Befor

Summers et al., 1978, described an experiment in which performance and leg conditions of birds fed diets devoid of synthetic biotin, choline, folic acid, manganese, and miacin were observed and recoreded. This is a report on birds from the same experiment. Dyschondroplasia of the tibia was documented and the distal end of each tibia examined histologically. Metatarsal length and condyle depth of the distal tibia were also determined. Metatarsal length was influenced by vitamin deficiencies as well as the type of floor on which binds were raised. The depth of the intercondyle space was affected

The fundamental role of vitamin D in health and disease is constantly expanding. The major sources of the "sunshine vitamin" are sunlight exposure with subsequent cutaneous synthesis and oral intake in the form of supplementation or dietary consumption. Not only crucial for skeletal health, vitamin D is also linked to numerous disorders of cardiovascular, neurologic, reproductive, infectious, autoimmune, and dermatologic origins. It is a pleiotropic fat-soluble hormone that affects key factors in the pathogenesis of numerous cutaneous disorders because of its effects on the innate and adaptive

Onycholysis is a disorder of the nails, described as the separation of the nail bed from the nail plate. While onycholysis most commonly occurs due to trauma to the nail, such as after manicures or chemical exposure, it can also result from drug-induced photosensitivity. Many medications have been linked to onycholysis, including tetracyclines, psoralens, and retinoids, which are synthetic derivatives of vitamin A. Oral retinoid use has been associated with various nail changes, but there are no reports of onycholysis resulting from oral vitamin A intake. Thus, we present the case of an 85-yea

An inverse association between vitamin D status and obesity has been reported across diverse populations and age groups in humans. In animal model of diet-induced obesity, dysregulation of vitamin D metabolism has been observed. However, the causal relationship between vitamin D status and obesity is not conclusive. Several explanations, such as volumetric dilution, sequestration of vitamin D into adipose tissue, and limited sunlight exposure, have been suggested as the underlying mechanisms linking poor vitamin D status and obesity. Vitamin D can modulate adipose tissue biology, spanning from

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vitamin C can be a potential adjunctive treatment option for critically ill individuals due to its pleiotropic effects as electron donor in many enzymatic reactions throughout the body. Recently, several important randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating vitamin C in critically ill patients have been published.
RECENT FINDINGS: Two recent large RCTs administering high-dose vitamin C to patients with sepsis and COVID-19 showed signs of harm. Though performed at high standard, these trials had several limitations. Recent studies in cardiac surgery and burns showed de

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated as a contributing factor to a spectrum of reproductive health burden, including difficulty conceiving, pathogenesis of gynaecological disorders such as uterine fibroids and endometriosis, to metabolic and endocrine burden of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
RECENT FINDINGS: There have been recent publications showing that in infertile women who are supplemented with vitamin D, there are higher pregnancy rates; there are improved ovarian reserve parameters in women with diminished ovarian reserve; curtailed fibroid growth in those

Vitamin B1 also known as thiamin is an essential vitamin assuring body functioning and comes exclusively from food. Vitamin B1 deficiency is an under-diagnosed disease because it is less frequently suspected in high income countries. However, its risk factors, like alcohol and malnutrition, are common in the general population. Thiamin deficiency can lead to three clinical entities, Gayet-Wernicke encephalopathy, which can progress to Korsakoff encephalopathy, wet Beriberi and its dry form. These diseases are associated with high mortality and heavy long-term sequelae. Rapid diagnosis enables

Vitamin D presents a plethora of different functions that go beyond its role in skeletal homeostasis. It is an efficient endocrine regulator of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) and erythropoiesis, exerts immunomodulatory effects, reduces the cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. In Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients, Vitamin D function is impaired; the renal hydrolyzation of its inactive form by the action of 1α-hydroxylase declines at the same pace of reduced nephron mass. Moreover, Vitamin D major carrier, the D-binding protein (DBP), is less represented due to Nep

Vitamin D deficiency affects more than half of the general population. During pregnancy vitamin D insufficiency is associated with a higher risk of complications such as an increased incidence of miscarriages. Preterm delivery, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, growth retardation and low birth weight as well as postpartum hemorrhage are all pathologies whose incidence seems to be increased with hypovitaminosis D. This could be linked to the pregnancy changes of the immune system, on which vitamin D plays a well-known modulating role. Substitution, even if its benefit is not clearly establish

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence associates chronic pain syndrome, such as fibromyalgia, with endogenous pain modulatory system dysfunction, leading to an impaired descending pain inhibition. In this study, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we aimed at seeking possible functional connectivity changes of the periaqueductal gray (PAG), a brainstem area that belongs to the endogenous pain modulatory system, in patients with fibromyalgia.
METHODS: In 20 patients with fibromyalgia and 15 healthy subjects, we investigated PAG functional connectivity using resting-state

Vitamin A is a generic term describing compounds that have the same biological activity as retinol. Dietary vitamin A can be obtained from "provitamin A" carotenoids (e.g., ß-carotene) found in plant foods such as carrots, cantaloupes, and sweet peppers, or as "preformed vitamin A" found in many dietary supplements, animal livers, and vitamin A-fortified foods, such as breakfast cereals, milk, cheese, and yogurt. Low consumption of vitamin A can cause night blindness, reduce immune function, and have detrimental developmental effects. Several lines of evidence suggest that excessive dietary in

Vitamin K acts as a coenzyme of carboxylase, catalyzing the carboxylation of several vitamin K dependent proteins. Beyond its well-known effects on blood coagulation, it also exerts relevant effects on bone and the vascular system. In this review, we point out the relevance of an adequate vitamin K intake to obtain sufficient levels of carboxylated (active form) vitamin K dependent proteins (such as Osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein) to prevent bone health. Another bone-related action of Vitamin K is being a ligand of the nuclear steroid and xenobiotic receptor (SXR). We also discuss the reco

Fortification of food products with vitamin D was central to the eradication of rickets in the early parts of the 20th century in the United States. In the subsequent almost 100 years since, accumulating evidence has linked vitamin D deficiency to a variety of outcomes, and this has paralleled greater public interest and awareness of the health benefits of vitamin D. Supplements containing vitamin D are now widely available in both industrialized and developing countries, and many are in the form of unregulated formulations sold to the public with little guidance for safe administration. The pharmacokinetics of vitamin C (vitC) is indeed complex. Regulated primarily by a family of saturable sodium dependent vitC transporters (SVCTs), the absorption and elimination are highly dose-dependent. Moreover, the tissue specific expression levels and subtypes of these SVCTs result in a compartmentalized distribution pattern with a diverse range of organ concentrations of vitC at homeostasis ranging from about 0.2 mM in the muscle and heart, and up to 10 mM in the brain and adrenal gland. The homeostasis of vitC is influenced by several factors, including genetic polymorphisms and envir

Vitamin A is a general term for retinoids. Vitamin A deficiency leads to a variety of cutaneous manifestations. It also functions as a hormone through retinoic acid receptors altering the activity of multiple cell lines. Pancreatic vitamin A levels are critical for retinoid signaling and normal pancreatic control of glucose. Vitamin A deficiency is more common during infection, and supplementation reduces severe morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases. Vitamin A modulates activities at the cellular level and, via its interrelationship with hormones such as thyroid, insulin, and cortic

One hundred years has passed since the discovery of vitamin D as the active component of cod-liver oil which cured the bone disease rickets. Since then our knowledge of vitamin D has expanded tremendously and has included recognition of the importance of UV radiation as a source of the vitamin as well as the discovery of the vitamin as a nutrient, a pro-hormone and a potent steroid hormone with a major role in calcium and bone metabolism. In the last 25 years or so, the discovery of the vitamin D receptor in over 30 different body tissues together with the existence of the alpha-1-hydroxylase
