Ecosystems are increasingly involved and influenced by human activities, which are ever-increasing. These activities are mainly due to vehicular, air and sea transportation, thus causing possible repercussions on the fauna that exists there. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the possible consequences that these activities may have in the field of animal neurobehavior, with special emphasis on the species involved, the most common environment concerned, the noise source and the disturbance that is caused. This research includes articles published in the major databases (PubMed

INTRODUCTION: Continuous intraoperative neural monitoring (C-IONM) is a promising technology used to decrease recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) damage during thyroid surgery. However, C-IONM use is limited due to its challenging application. C-IONM requires dissection of the carotid sheath and placement of an electrode around the vagus nerve (VN). In our study, we simultaneously stimulated and monitored the proximal RLN trans-tracheally using surface electrodes that were positioned solely on the endotracheal tube.
METHODS: We described the design, implementation, and testing of a pre-prototype,

BACKGROUND: In recent years, ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) in pups has become established as a good tool for evaluating behaviors related to communication deficits and emotional states observed in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure leads to impairments and social behavior deficits associated with autism, with the effects of VPA being considered as a reliable animal model of ASD. Some studies also suggest that prenatal exposure to chlorpyrifos (CPF) could enhance autistic-like behaviors.
METHODS: In order to explore these similarities, in the present study w

The majority of sensory physiology experiments have used anesthesia to facilitate the recording of neural activity. Current techniques allow researchers to study sensory function in the context of varying behavioral states. To reconcile results across multiple behavioral and anesthetic states, it is important to consider how and to what extent anesthesia plays a role in shaping neural response properties. The role of anesthesia has been the subject of much debate, but the extent to which sensory coding properties are altered by anesthesia has yet to be fully defined. In this study we asked how

The Florida manatee is regularly exposed to high volumes of vessel traffic and other human-related noise because of its coastal distribution. Quantifying specific aspects of the manatee's acoustic environment will allow for a better understanding of how these animals respond to both natural and human-induced changes in their environment. Transmission loss measurements were made in 24 sampling sites that were chosen based on the frequency of manatee presence. The Monterey-Miami Parabolic Equation model was used to relate environmental parameters to transmission loss in two extremely shallow wat

The orexin-2/hypocretin-2 (OX2R) receptor gene is mutated in canine narcolepsy and disruption of the prepro-orexin/hypocretin ligand gene results in both an animal model of narcolepsy and sporadic cases of the human disease. This evidence suggests that the structure of the OX2R gene, and its homologue, the OX1R gene, both members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, and the gene encoding the peptide ligands, the prepro-orexin/hypocretin gene, may be variables in the etiology of sleep disorders. We report a single stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of the coding re

We have studied the effects of 14-methoxymetopon (HS 198), a potent opioid agonist, on the responses to the tail electric stimulation test and plus-maze activity of adult male rats. The prototype mu agonist morphine was used as the drug of reference. Besides we addressed the effects of HS 198 on the serum corticosterone levels and on serotonergic systems of discrete brain regions. Both drugs were administered subcutaneously. Morphine (5 mg/kg) and HS 198 (30 microg/kg) induced a similar effect on the nociceptive test, with both drugs significantly increasing the threshold for the vocalization

Patients with laryngeal motor control disorders need improved dynamic glottal closure for speech and swallowing. To evaluate the functional outcome of intermittent chronic thyroarytenoid muscle stimulation in an animal model, 6 canines were implanted with bilateral Medtronic Xtrel systems containing Peterson-type electrodes in the inferior and superior portions of the thyroarytenoid muscle. Stimulation was on one side only at 60 Hz, for 5 s on and 5 s off, over 8 h, 5 days per week, up to 8 months. Monthly videorecordings were done under anesthesia to measure the voltage threshold for detectab

Changes in sensory function including chronic pain and allodynia are common sequelae of spinal cord injury (SCI) in humans. The present study documents the extent and time course of mechanical allodynia and cold hyperalgesia after contusion SCI in the rat using stimulation with graded von Frey filaments (4.97-50.45 g force) and ice probes. Fore- and hind-paw withdrawal thresholds to plantar skin stimulation were determined in rats with a range of SCI severities (10-g weight dropped from 6.25, 12.5, or 25 mm using the MASCIS injury device); animals with 25-mm injuries most consistently showed d

Experimental induced phonation in the dog has been used in short-term studies by several investigators and has proved quite useful in laryngeal research. In this study a long-term canine phonation model is described that uses permanently implanted electrodes on the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves. A serial induced phonation model has not been previously reported and is needed for laryngeal research in which voice results are a primary end point. Inexpensive, reliable, nontoxic electrodes were designed and fabricated. The laryngeal nerves were found to be quite susceptible to injury, ne

To identify a suitable animal model and to delineate the neural pathway and target organs of the esophagoglottal closure reflex we studied three species. Study showed the existence of an esophagoglottal closure reflex in cats. The presence of this reflex could not be documented in the opossum. In monkeys, because of the inadequacy of the available recording devices, its presence could not be ascertained. In the feline model, the closure response of the vocal folds to the abrupt generalized and segmental distension of the esophagus was similar to that of the humans. Study findings indicate that

Vee is a nonbinary (sex assigned at birth: female) 16-year-old 11th grader presenting for their initial multidisciplinary team assessment (including developmental-behavioral pediatrics and psychological assessment). Vee's family first became concerned about their development when they were in pre-kindergarten. The school had concerns related to autism and provided Vee with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for autism-related services, although a formal medical diagnosis was never made. Vee "lost" the autism classification and associated services when they were in the first grade and no lo

Vocal fold fibrosis is the principal pathological basis of intractable voice disorders. Previous etiological models have attributed vocal fold scarring solely to mechanical trauma and chemical irritation, whereas the local mucosal microbiota of the vocal folds and its cross-kingdom regulation of host gene expression have long received little attention. Integrating interdisciplinary advances, this review proposes a cross-kingdom pathogenic hypothesis: phonotrauma induces laryngeal dysbiosis and disassembly of the vocal fold epithelial tight junctions, and opportunistic pathogens under stress re

INTRODUCTION: Analysis of medial surface dynamics of the vocal folds (VF) is critical to understanding voice production and treatment of voice disorders. We analyzed VF medial surface vibratory dynamics, evaluating the effects of airflow and nerve stimulation using 3D reconstruction and empirical eigenfunctions (EEF).
STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine hemilarynx phonation.
METHODS: An in vivo canine hemilarynx was phonated while graded stimulation of the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves (RLN and SLN) was performed. For each phonatory condition, vibratory cycles were 3D reconstructed from t

OBJECTIVE: To describe left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy (LRLn) performed under standing sedation and evaluate the effect of LRLn on upper respiratory tract function using a high-speed treadmill test (HST). We hypothesized that (1) unilateral LRLn could be performed in standing horses, resulting in ipsilateral arytenoid cartilage collapse (ACC); and (2) HST after LRLn would be associated with alterations in upper respiratory function consistent with dynamic ACC.
ANIMALS: 6 Thoroughbred horses.
METHODS: The horses were trained and underwent a baseline HST up to 14 m/s at 5% incline until fa

Laryngeal paralysis is a well-documented cause of upper respiratory tract obstruction in canines. Diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis is usually made by visual evaluation of laryngeal motion whilst patients are under a light-plane of anesthesia. However, in human studies of laryngeal function evaluation, it has been shown that subjective scoring can lead to significant interobserver variance, which may cause false diagnosis. In this study, we propose to introduce a more objective method of assessing laryngeal function using GlotAnTools and Tracker software to directly measure laryngeal motion in

It is well known that the phonatory process changes during the life span. However, detailed investigations on potential factors concerned are rare. To deal with this issue, we performed extended biomechanical, macro anatomical, and histological analyses of the contributing laryngeal structures in ex vivo juvenile sheep models. Altogether twelve juvenile sheep larynges were analyzed within the phonatory experiments. Three different elongation levels and 16 different flow levels were applied to achieve a large variety of phonatory conditions. Vocal fold dynamics and acoustical and subglottal sig

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Although the primary goal of medialization laryngoplasty is to improve glottic closure, implant placement is also likely to alter the biomechanical properties of the vocal fold (VF). We sought to employ novel, nanoscale technology to quantify these properties following medialization based on the hypothesis that different medialization materials will likely yield differential biomechanical effects.
STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo.
METHODS: Nine pig larynges were divided into three groups: control, Silastic (Dow Corning, Midland, Michigan, U.S.A.) block medialization, or Gore-Tex

OBJECTIVE: Coughing and dysphagia have been described following prosthetic laryngoplasty (LP) with or without ventriculectomy/ventriculocordectomy (VE/VCE) for the treatment of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. All previous case descriptions include patients with acute onset of clinical signs after surgery that persisted. The authors observed a late-onset of dysphagia and coughing months to years after LP ± VE/VCE. The condition was always associated with an abnormality of the aryepiglottic fold (AEF). Treatment options for those patients are limited. We suggest augmentation of the AEF as treatm
