[Developments in chromate allergy in the German construction industry].

For decades potassium dichromate has been the most important allergen in the construction industry. In Scandinavian countries the prevalence of potassium dichromate sensitization declined following the introduction of low-chromate cement. In contrast, analysis of our register in Northern Bavaria and the data of workers compensation board show no significant decline in potassium dichromate sensitization in the German construction industry during the 1990s. In 1993, German legislation provided an Approved Code of Practice and the cement manufacturers committed themselves to reduce the level of w

Duration of chronic pain and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory: profiles of industrially injured workers.

The present study explored the usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in understanding the relationship between duration of chronic pain and psychiatric difficulties. The MMPI responses of workers' compensation patients with varying levels of low back pain chronicity were compared. One hundred ninety eight patients, divided into three groups according to length of disability, underwent social history interviews and completed the MMPI. In regard to the overall profile, the sample had elevations on the Hypochondriasis, Depression, and Hysteria scales. A series of an…

Use of the SIRS in compensation cases: an examination of its validity and generalizability.

The Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms (SIRS; Rogers et al., Structured interview of reported symptoms (SIRS) and professional manual, 1992) is a well-validated psychological measure for the assessment of feigned mental disorders (FMD) in clinical, forensic, and correctional settings. Comparatively little work has evaluated its usefulness in compensation and disability contexts. The present study examined SIRS data from 569 individuals undergoing forensic neuropsychiatric examinations for the purposes of workers' compensation, personal injury, or disability proceedings. Using bootstrapp…

Speaking up under constraints: a configurational JD-R explanation of safety voice among young construction workers.

INTRODUCTION: Young construction workers are exposed to high levels of occupational safety risk while often occupying relatively vulnerable positions in work groups. Safety voice is an important participatory mechanism for early hazard identification and occupational injury prevention. However, existing studies have mainly examined the net effects of individual predictors, offering limited insight into how multiple job demands, job resources, and personal capabilities combine to enable or constrain safety voice. METHODS: Drawing on the job demands-resources framework, this study adopted a con

Pleural mesothelioma risk in the construction industry: a case-control study in Italy, 2000-2018.

OBJECTIVES: Workers in the construction industry have been exposed to asbestos in various occupations. In Italy, a National Mesothelioma Registry has been implemented more than 20 years ago. Using cases selected from this registry and exploiting existing control data sets, we estimated relative risks for pleural mesothelioma (PM) among construction workers. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Cases from the National Mesothelioma Registry (2000-2018), controls from three previous case-control studies. METHODS: We selected male PM incident cases diagnosed in 2000-2018. Population controls we

Female sex workers experiences of using contraceptive methods: a qualitative study in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Female Sex Workers (FSWs) are predisposed to a broad range of social, sexual and reproductive health problems such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/HIV, unintended pregnancy, violence, sexual exploitation, stigma and discrimination. Female sex workers have unmet need for contraceptives and require comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) prevention interventions. Existing programs pay little attention to the broad sexual and reproductive health and rights of these women and often focus on HIV and other STIs prevention, care and treatment while neglecting their re

ISSLS prize winner: early predictors of chronic work disability: a prospective, population-based study of workers with back injuries.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective population-based cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To identify early predictors of chronic work disability after work-related back injury. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Identification of early predictors of prolonged disability after back injury could increase understanding concerning the development of chronic, disabling pain, and aid in secondary prevention. Few studies have examined predictors across multiple domains in a large, population-based sample. METHODS: Workers (N = 1885) were interviewed 3 weeks (average) after submitting a lost work-time claim for a back injury.

Hexavalent chromium compounds in the workplace: assessing the extent and magnitude of occupational exposure in Italy.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) compounds have been classified as carcinogenic to humans. This study evaluates the extent and magnitude of occupational exposures to Cr(VI) in Italy. Data were collected from exposure registries of companies compulsorily notified by the National Workers' Compensation Authority. Each measurement was characterized by economic activity sector, work force size, worker personal data, job description, year of measurement, and level of exposure. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out on the retrieved information. The number of workers potentially exposed was est…

Transient risk factors for acute traumatic hand injuries: a case-crossover study in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the remediable transient risk factors of occupational hand injuries in Hong Kong in order to guide the development of prevention strategies. METHODS: The case-crossover study design was adopted. Study subjects were workers with acute hand injuries presenting to the government Occupational Medicine Unit for compensation claims within 90 days from the date of injury. Detailed information on exposures to specific transient factors during the 60 minutes prior to the occurrence of the injury, during the same time interval on the day prior to the injury, as well as the usual

Failed acromioplasty for impingement syndrome.

We evaluated 67 shoulders in 65 patients who had pain and dysfunction for more than two years after an initial acromioplasty for impingement syndrome without a rotator cuff tear. In addition to a thorough history, physical examination, local anaesthesia injection and any other necessary investigations all patients had arthroscopic evaluation of the shoulder. In 27 shoulders there had been diagnostic errors, and in 28 operative errors; only in 12 had the diagnosis and the operative procedure both been correct. Subsequent operative intervention in patients not receiving worker's compensation ben

Impact of software and hardware technologies on occupational health and safety policies in Saudi Arabian oil refineries.

This article seeks to examine the impact of technology importation on occupational health and safety in both Saudi Arabian and U.S. oil refining industries. Technologies imported to the Saudi oil industry take two forms: hardware (sophisticated equipment to run oil facilities) and software (policies and regulations pertaining to workers' health and safety, and employment rights installed by Aramco's founding multinational companies). This study utilizes qualitative, historically oriented, cross-national case studies to compare and assess workers' health, safety, and rights in Saudi Aramco with

Loss to follow-up was associated with instability surgery, Medicaid or Workers' Compensation insurance, and missing preoperative visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores. An analysis from the Quality Outcomes Database, Part 1. Disability, quality of life, and pain outcomes following lumbar spine surgery: predicting likely individual patient outcomes for shared decision-making.

OBJECTIVE Quality and outcomes registry platforms lie at the center of many emerging evidence-driven reform models. Specifically, clinical r … gery, number of levels surgically treated, history of fusion surgery, surgical approach, receipt of workers' compensation, liability insurance, insurance status, and ambulatory ability. To create a predictive model, each 12-month PRO was treated as an ordinal dependent variable and a separate proportional-odds ordinal logistic regression model was fitted for each PRO. …

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of an evidence-based opioid guidelines-based program implemented at the largest worker's compensation insurer in Utah. METHODS: All new claims, including surgeries, were included. Pre- and post-intervention comparisons included percentage of claims treated with an opioid, provision of a second opioid prescription, opioid use above 50 mg morphine equivalent dose (MED), opioid use more than 90 mg MED, and opioid use over 90 days. RESULTS: There were significant (P < 0.001) reductions in all primary outcomes, with a reduction in MED
