Phylogeography of Rift Valley Fever Virus in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Rift Valley Fever is an acute zoonotic viral disease caused by Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV) that affects ruminants and humans in Sub-Sahar … Arrival of RVFV in Madagascar resulted from three major waves of virus introduction: the first from Zimbabwe, and the second and third from Kenya. The two major outbreaks in Egypt since 1977 possibly resulted from a long-distance introduction from Zimbabwe during the 1970s, and a single introduction took RVFV from Kenya to Saudi Arabia. Movement of the vir …

Bartonella (Rochalimaea) henselae in southern Africa--evidence for infections in domestic cats and implications for veterinarians.

Substantial evidence has recently accumulated showing domestic cats to be the principal reservoirs of Bartonella henselae, the aetiological agent of human diseases including cat-scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis and a febrile bacteraemia syndrome. To determine the prevalence of antibodies reactive with Bartonella henselae in cats from southern Africa, indirect fluorescent antibody assays were carried out on feline sera from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Overall, 23% (39/171) of cats had antibody titres > or = 1/64, with cats from Zimbabwe (24%; 28/119) having higher sero…

Cost-effectiveness of a community-based intervention for reducing the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium and HIV in Africa.

Epidemiological studies from sub-Saharan Africa show that genital infection with Schistosoma haematobium [corrected] may increase the risk for HIV infection in young women. Therefore, preventing schistosomiasis has the potential to reduce HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. We developed a transmission model of female genital schistosomiasis and HIV infections that we fit to epidemiological data of HIV and female genital schistosomiasis prevalence and coinfection in rural Zimbabwe. We used the model to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a multifaceted community-based intervention for preven…

Virological outcomes and risk factors for non-suppression for routine and repeat viral load testing after enhanced adherence counselling during viral load testing scale-up in Zimbabwe: analytic cross-sectional study using laboratory data from 2014 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Since the scale-up of routine viral load (VL) testing started in 2016, there is limited evidence on VL suppression rates under p … were at risk of VL non-suppression. CONCLUSION: Close to 90% suppression in routine VL shows that Zimbabwe is on track to reach the third UNAIDS target. Strategies to improve the identification of clients with high routine VL results for repeating testing after EAC and ART adherence in subpopulations (men, adolescents and young adolescents) at risk of vi …

Fasciola species and their vertebrate and snail intermediate hosts in East and Southern Africa: a review.

A systematic review was conducted focusing on the distribution of Fasciola species and their snail intermediate hosts (IHs) in East and Southern Africa. The reviewed literature showed that both Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica are present in East and Southern Africa, and infect a wide range of domestic and wild ruminants. Fasciola gigantica was reported in six East African and five Southern African countries, where Radix natalensis (found in low altitudes) was reported to be the main IH. Fasciola hepatica was reported in Tanzania and Ethiopia (East Africa), and in South Africa and Zimbabwe (…

Assessing the acceptability of, adherence to and preference for a dual prevention pill (DPP) for HIV and pregnancy prevention compared to oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and oral contraception taken separately: protocols for two randomised, controlled, cross-over studies in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective HIV prevention method; however, uptake and persistence have been low among southern African women. A dual prevention pill (DPP) that combines PrEP with oral contraception (OC) may increase PrEP use and better meet women's sexual and reproductive health needs. We will gauge the DPP's acceptability in two cross-over clinical trials. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PC952 (Zimbabwe) and PC953 (South Africa) will compare acceptability, adherence and preference for an over-encapsulated DPP versus PrEP and OCs taken separately. HIV-negat…

Mapping human fatalities from megafauna to inform coexistence strategies.

Human fatalities from human-wildlife conflict (HWC) represent a critical dimension of conservation, often triggering retaliatory actions and post-traumatic stress in affected communities. However, most studies focus on the economic implications of HWC, neglecting human fatalities which may have far-reaching long-term implications. This study investigates the spatial and temporal patterns of human fatalities caused by megafaunal species in Zimbabwe, using data collected from 2016 to 2022. Through spatial and statistical analyses based on the Getis-Ord Gi* hotspot analysis and Mann-Kendall trend…

An evaluation of a choice architecture-based intervention on prescribing of TB preventive treatment to people living with HIV in southern Africa (the CAT study): a cluster-randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: While highly effective for reducing the risk of tuberculosis (TB) disease, TB preventive treatment (TPT) is underused among people living with HIV (PWH). We evaluated the effectiveness of a behavioural economics-based choice architecture approach to increase facility-level TPT prescribing to PWH in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. METHODS: We conducted a cluster-randomised trial within the IMPAACT4TB 3HP rollout, in which 57 healthcare facilities were randomly assigned 1:1 to choice architecture (intervention) or standard TPT prescribing (control). The aim was to link TPT to ant…

The risk of schistosomiasis in Zimbabwean triathletes.

A study was carried out to determine the risk of schistosomiasis in triathletes in Zimbabwe. The prevalence of schistosomiasis in 30 triathletes (24 males, 6 females) was compared with that in 24 non-triathlete controls after the 1989/90 triathlon season. All the subjects found to be infected were then treated with praziquantel (40 mg/kg). The seasonal incidence of schistosomiasis in triathletes was then determined in a prospective study during the 1990/91 season. Schistosomiasis was diagnosed by urine and stool microscopy for ova, blood eosinophil counts and serological bilharzial fluorescent…

Mokola virus involved in a human contact (South Africa).

Isolations of Mokola virus (MOKV) are rare, but in South Africa and Zimbabwe this genotype 3 lyssavirus variant has been occasionally found in domestic mammals (cats and a dog) with a total of 17 virus isolates (South Africa 10, Zimbabwe 7) having been recovered during the past 30 years. We report the identification of a MOKV isolate involved in a human contact in Grahamstown (Eastern Cape, South Africa) and a genetic comparison with previously characterized isolates. This reported MOKV case was in a previously immunized cat. While the continual recovery of MOKV isolates in domestic cats is sp…

Substantial regional differences in human herpesvirus 8 seroprevalence in sub-Saharan Africa: insights on the origin of the "Kaposi's sarcoma belt".

Equatorial Africa has among the highest incidences of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in the world, thus earning the name "KS Belt." This was the case even before the HIV epidemic. To date, there is no clear evidence that HHV-8 seroprevalence is higher in this region but interpretation of the available literature is tempered by differences in serologic assays used across studies. We examined representatively sampled ambulatory adults in Uganda, which is in the "KS Belt," and in Zimbabwe and South Africa which are outside the Belt, for HHV-8 antibodies. All serologic assays were uniformly performed in th…

The potential of utilizing Provitamin A-biofortified maize in producing mutwiwa, a Zimbabwean traditional fermented food.

Biofortification interventions have the potential to combat micronutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which is prevalent in Zimbabwe. The poor acceptability of provitamin A (PVA)-biofortified maize is still a challenge that exists in Zimbabwe. This study investigated the effect of replacing white maize (WM) with PVA-biofortified maize on the nutritional composition of mutwiwa, a Zimbabwean traditional food, and its microbiological safety. Chemical and microbiological tests were conducted using AOAC standard methods. Total carotene content was 12.78 µg/g dry weight (DW) in…
