Epidemiological characteristics, predisposing factors and microbiological profiles of infectious corneal ulcers: the Portsmouth corneal ulcer study.

AIM: The aim of the study was to identify the epidemiological characteristics, predisposing factors, and the clinical and microbiological di … unted for 283 (28.9%) with the predominance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Nine out of 11 patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis were contact lens wearers. The majority of patients 1728 (96.8%) sought medical help more than once and 34 patients (1.9%) had poor visual outcome. Follow-up was completed in 1633 patients (91.4%) with an average of 11.5 days. CONCLUSIONS …

The most frequently cultured organisms were Pseudomonas and other Gram-negative germs (70%) and Acanthamoeba (16%). The majority (77%) of the corneal ulcerations were centrally located and resulted in an average visual loss of four lines. CONCLUSION: During the study period, the number of patients hospitalized rose, which is only partially explained by th …

Analysis of Legionella pneumophila strains associated with nosocomial pneumonia in a neonatal intensive care unit.

A premature child received continuous mechanical ventilation in a neonatal intensive care unit. On day 10 of his life he developed pneumonia … t water system and serogroup 6 isolates from the hot water supply were able to multiply in cultured Acanthamoeba castellanii cells and in guinea pigs. The serogroup 6 strain, although prevalent in the incubators, was not found in any of the clinical specimens by either culture of immunofluorescence.

Low Zoonotic Pathogen Burden in Free-Roaming Cats Revealed by 18S rRNA Metabarcoding: A Baseline Study from an Insular Natura 2000 Site in Spain.

Evaluation of Indolocarbazoles from Streptomyces sanyensis as a Novel Source of Therapeutic Agents against the Brain-Eating Amoeba Naegleria fowleri.

Hence, in this study, the activity of the previously isolated ICZs, staurosporine (STS), 7-oxostaurosporine (7OSTS), 4'-demethylamino-4'-oxostaurosporine, and streptocarbazole B, was evaluated against two type strains of N. fowleri. Infections after refractive surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the review is to provide a summary of the recent literature concerning infections after refractive surgery pertinent to each procedure category. RECENT FINDINGS: New data from a large retrospective study suggest that the incidence of post-laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis infectious keratitis is declining. Additionally, recent case studies have reported viral, fungal, and Acanthamoeba pathogens. Corneal collagen cross-linking is emerging as an alternative therapeutic option for early stage post-LASIK infectious keratitis. Postoperative bandage contact len…

Amoeba Predation of Cryptococcus neoformans Results in Pleiotropic Changes to Traits Associated with Virulence.

Amoeboid predators, such as amoebae, are proposed to select for survival traits in soil microbes such as Cryptococcus neoformans; these traits can also function in animal virulence by defeating phagocytic immune cells, such as macrophages. Consistent with this notion, incubation of various fungal species with amoebae enhanced their virulence, but the mechanisms involved are unknown. In this study, we exposed three strains of C. neoformans (1 clinical and 2 environmental) to predation by Acanthamoeba castellanii for prolonged times and then analyzed surviving colonies phenotypically and genetic…

A genomic island present along the bacterial chromosome of the Parachlamydiaceae UWE25, an obligate amoebal endosymbiont, encodes a potentially functional F-like conjugative DNA transfer system.

BACKGROUND: The genome of Protochlamydia amoebophila UWE25, a Parachlamydia-related endosymbiont of free-living amoebae, was recently published, providing the opportunity to search for genomic islands (GIs). RESULTS: On the residual cumulative G+C content curve, a G+C-rich 19-kb region was observed. This sequence is part of a 100-kb chromosome region, containing 100 highly co-oriented ORFs, flanked by two 17-bp direct repeats. Two identical gly-tRNA genes in tandem are present at the proximal end of this genetic element. Several mobility genes encoding transposases and bacteriophage-related p

Investigation of the gut parasitic community composition in Manis pentadactyla and Manis javanica based on high-throughput amplicon sequencing.

Protozoan taxa such as Eimeria, Cryptosporidium, and other free-living protozoa such as Acanthamoeba, Colpoda, Vermamoeba, Bicosoecida, and Trinema were found to be highly abundant and widely distributed.
