Bioactivation of Konjac Glucomannan Films by Tannic Acid and Gluconolactone Addition.

Wound healing is a dynamic process that requires an optimal extracellular environment, as well as an accurate synchronization between various cell types. Over the past few years, great efforts have been devoted to developing novel approaches for treating and managing burn injuries, sepsis, and chronic or accidental skin injuries. Multifunctional smart-polymer-based dressings represent a promising approach to support natural healing and address several problems plaguing partially healed injuries, including severe inflammation, scarring, and wound infection. Naturally derived compounds offer uni

ECG monitoring in high voltage electric injury patients presenting with normal ECG: Time to revisit practice?

Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) recommends prolonged ECG monitoring of patients with high risk factors post electric injuries, for detecting and treating potentially life threatening arrhythmias. We hereby present our experience of high voltage electric injuries (HVEI) patients with high risk factors, managed at a level 1 Trauma Centre. Seven patients of high voltage electric injuries with significant burns (BSA > 10% of 2nd degree and above) were admitted over a year (Jan 1, 2019 to Dec 31, 2019), age ranging from 11 to 51 (median 25 yrs). Six out of seven patients (85.7%) were males. Mod

Identification of physical abuse cases in hospitalized children: accuracy of International Classification of Diseases codes.

OBJECTIVE: Hospital discharge databases are being increasingly used to track the incidence of child physical abuse in the United States. These databases use International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes to categorize illnesses and injuries in hospitalized patients. We assessed the accuracy of the assignment of these codes for cases of child physical abuse. STUDY DESIGN: Participants were all children (N = 133) evaluated by a child abuse pediatrician (CAP) for suspicion of abuse at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital from January 1, 2007-December

Occupation and mortality related to alcohol, drugs and sexual habits.

BACKGROUND: To identify opportunities for targeted prevention, we explored differences in occupational mortality from diseases and injuries related to alcohol consumption, sexual habits and drug abuse. METHODS: Using data on all deaths among men and women aged 16-74 years in England and Wales during 1991-2000, we derived age- and social class-standardized proportional mortality ratios (PMRs) by occupation for cause of death categories defined a priori as potentially related to alcohol consumption, sexual habits or drug abuse. RESULTS: The highest mortality from alcohol-related diseases and i

Experience with helicopter rescue missions for crevasse accidents.

We retrospectively studied incidence, patterns, and severity of injury and hypothermia in 95 victims of crevasse accidents. Fifteen (16%) victims were already dead when the rescue team arrived on the scene. Asphyxia (8 victims) was typically caused by snow burial owing to a collapse of snow bridges covering crevasses and was observed only during winter sports activities on glaciers. In 7 patients, death was caused by lethal trauma. Severe or critical multisystem trauma (ISS ≥ 16) was found in an additional 16 victims (17%). Severe or critical injuries were predominantly thoracic injuries and i

Retinal haemorrhages in- head trauma resulting from falls: differential diagnosis with non-accidental trauma in patients younger than 2 years of age.

INTRODUCTION: Falls are a common chief complaint among children seeking medical attention in emergency departments and are the leading cause of injuries requiring hospitalisation. Falls are also a frequent excuse to conceal cases of maltreatment in small children. Retinal haemorrhages could be a useful marker for their differential diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the prevalence and characteristics of retinal haemorrhages in children with head trauma resulting from a vertical fall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study of children younger than 2 years of age a

Epilepsy-related injuries.

Only one prospective, controlled study has compared the risk of accidental injury in persons with epilepsy to controls without seizures. A mildly increased risk in the epilepsy group was found, predominantly due to injuries that result directly from a seizure. With regard to injury type, this study found significantly higher rates of only head and soft tissue injury; however, most injuries were minor. Several retrospective, population-based studies have suggested increased rates of more serious injury types. Submersion injury has a high mortality; the risk of submersion in children with epilep

Traumatic events exposure in men who have sex with men with and without experience of displacement in Ukraine.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has displaced millions, potentially exposing them to traumatic events in the process. Potentially traumatic events (PTEs) have been linked to negative health outcomes, including depression, substance abuse and risky sexual behaviours. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are especially vulnerable to the effects of displacement, given widespread MSM stigma in Ukraine. A cross-sectional survey of MSM was conducted as part of a peer-driven intervention between August 2023 and January 2024 across eight cities in Ukraine via respondent-driven sampling. Lifetime PTE exposu

Change in Incidence and Severity of Abusive Head Trauma in the Paediatric Age Group Pre- and During COVID-19 Lockdown in the North East of England.

BACKGROUND: Abusive head trauma (AHT) is currently the accepted terminology that encompasses previously used terms such as non-accidental injury (NAI) or non-accidental head injury (NAHI) and shaken baby syndrome (SBS). It is AHT and its ocular manifestations that ophthalmologists are vital in identifying and reporting. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether there is a change in the incidence or severity of AHT pre- and during COVID-19 lockdown. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: AHT cases reported between March-June 2019 and March-June 2020. Data will be collected from ***** **** ********* NHS Foundati

Epidemiology of maxillofacial trauma in the elderly: A European multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: The progressive aging of European population seems to determine a change in the epidemiology, incidence and etiology of maxillofacial fractures with an increase in the frequency of old patients sustaining craniofacial trauma. The objective of the present study was to assess the demographic variables, causes, and patterns of facial fractures in elderly population (with 70 years or more). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data from all geriatric patients (70 years or more) with facial fractures between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2017, were collected. The following data were record

Transverse divergent dislocation of the elbow with ipsilateral distal radius fracture in a child.

We report a rare case of an irreducible transverse divergent dislocation of the elbow with an ipsilateral distal radius torus fracture and a fracture of the coronoid process in a 9-year-old male. Closed reduction of the elbow was attempted, but the humeroulnar joint remained dislocated. At surgery, the avulsed anterior band of the medial collateral ligament complex of the elbow was found to be interposed between the medial condyle of the humerus and the olecranon. The dislocation was reduced after relieving the ligament entrapment, which was then repaired. The unstable proximal radioulnar join

Injuries and illnesses of big game hunters in western Colorado: a 9-year analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize big game hunter visits to a rural hospital's emergency department (ED). Using data collected on fatalities, injuries, and illnesses over a 9-year period, trends were noted and comparisons made to ED visits of alpine skiers, swimmers, and bicyclists. Out-of-hospital hunter fatalities reported by the county coroner's office were also reviewed. Cautionary advice is offered for potential big game hunters and their health care providers. METHODS: Self-identified hunters were noted in the ED log of a rural Colorado hospital from 1997 to 2005,

Diagnosis and treatment of a penetrating brain injury caused by a welding electrode: A case report.

RATIONALE: Penetrating brain injury caused by a welding electrode is a rare occurrence. This type of injury requires careful preoperative assessment and timely treatment measures to avoid secondary damage. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old male patient fell from a height of approximately 5 m during when a welding electrode in his left hand was inadvertently inserted into his brain. The patient had a GCS score of 15 and complaints of dizziness and headache. CT showed an object of metallic density penetrating the skull and entering the brain parenchyma in the frontotemporal region. DIAGNOSIS: Ac

[Primary enucleation in an avulsion injury : A high-risk procedure under phenprocoumon].

The case of a 77-year-old woman with trauma after a fall is reported. On clinical examination, an avulsion injury was found in the left eye with dual optic nerve dissection. An INR of 3.3 was determined in a perioperative blood sample. The given conditions forced the rare but urgent indication for primary enucleation with hemostasis. Oral anticoagulation presented perioperative high risk, especially due to the potential risk of bleeding from the ophthalmic artery.

Characterizing the mechanical parameters of forward and backward falls as experienced in snowboarding.

Wrist injuries are frequently observed after falls in snowboarding. In this study, laboratory experiments mimicking forward and backward falls were analysed. In six different falling scenarios, participants self-initiated falls from a static initial position. Eighteen volunteers conducted a total of 741 trials. Measurements were taken for basic parameters describing the kinematics as well as the biomechanical loading during impact, such as impact force, impact acceleration, and velocity. The effective mass affecting the wrist in a fall also was determined. The elbow angle at impact showed a mo
