Systemic nicotine enhances neural processing in primary auditory cortex (A1) as determined using tone-evoked, current-source density (CSD) measurements. For example, nicotine enhances the characteristic frequency (CF)-evoked current sink in layer 4 of A1, increasing amplitude and decreasing latency. However, since presenting auditory stimuli within a stream of stimuli increases the complexity of response dynamics, we sought to determine the effects of nicotine on CSD responses to trains of CF stimuli (one-second trains at 2-40 Hz; each train repeated 25 times). CSD recordings were obtained usi

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations (which occur when the distinction between thoughts and perceptions is blurred) are common in psychotic disorders. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) may be implicated, because it receives multiple inputs, including sound and affective value via the amygdala, orchestrating complex emotional responses. We aimed to elucidate the circuit and neuromodulatory mechanisms that underlie the processing of emotionally salient auditory stimuli in the OFC — mechanisms that may be involved in auditory hallucinations.
METHODS: We identified the cortico-cortical connectivity c

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine if absent air conduction stimuli vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) responses found in ears after cochlear implantation can be the result of alterations in peripheral auditory mechanics rather than vestibular loss. Peripheral mechanical changes were investigated by comparing the response rates of air and bone conduction VEMPs as well as by measuring and evaluating wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) responses in ears with cochlear implants and normal-hearing control ears. The hypothesis was that the presence of a cochlear implant

Evoked otoacoustic emissions, EOAEs, are proved to be sounds aroused in response to external acoustic stimulus by the cochlear outer hair cells. Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions, TEOAEs, are the most clinically utilized EOAEs. TEOAEs are detectable in 98% of people with normal hearing, regardless of age or sex, while two ears of any individual produce similar TEOAEs waveforms. The objective of the presented study was the comparison of TEOAE magnitudes in cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. The TEOAE occurrence and characteristics in individuals of both samples with audiometrically proved

Animal studies have led to the view that the acoustic medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent reflex provides sharply tuned frequency-specific feedback that inhibits cochlear amplification. To determine if MOC activation is indeed narrow band, we measured the MOC effects in humans elicited by 60-dB sound pressure level (SPL) contralateral, ipsilateral, and bilateral noise bands as a function of noise bandwidth from 1/2 to 6.7 octaves. MOC effects were quantified by the change in stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions from 40 dB SPL probe tones near 0.5, 1, and 4 kHz. In a second experiment, the

Behavioral audiometry may be of limited value for those patients who have incurred significant brain injury and remain unresponsive to auditory stimuli. Even the more "objective" tests such as auditory brainstem response (ABR) and acoustic reflex testing may be inadequate tools to assess peripheral auditory function when significant brainstem injury has occurred. Determination of peripheral hearing becomes important because rehabilitation strategies are anchored to the knowledge of sensory function prior to implementing appropriate plans of intervention. We present the usefulness of otoacousti

Using the results of Mössbauer measurements, mechanical activity in the cochlea was tested for by comparing the measured basilar membrane (BM) transverse velocity amplitude with that calculated for a lossless mechanically passive system, derived from the measured BM velocity phase. If the cochlea is considered to be a lossless mechanically passive system, then the transverse velocity amplitude can be calculated from the group velocity and the relative variation of stiffness along the BM. The group velocity can be derived from the Mössbauer phase measurements, and the relative variation of stif

Conventional approaches to the treatment of stammering were judged ineffective in terms of both the percentage of patients cured and the relapses rate. Application of the new devices, e.g., biofeedback ones, combined with the conventional techniques only fairly improved the situation. A new combined technique is offered. It derives from a neurophysiological approach allowing one to destabilize the pathological speech pattern and create prerequisites for a quick learning (10 to 20 days) of the logopedical skills. The technique proved highly effective both in adults and in pre-school children. I

The sensory element of the acoustic startle reflex was studied in neonatal rats. Stimulus frequency, background noise, and stimulus presentation rate all affected the reflex. The performance of jaundiced rats with central auditory pathology is initially poorer than that of nonjaundiced rats but rapidly improves to the level of the controls, suggesting that the jaundiced rats may be a model for central auditory disturbances in humans. Startle reflex measurements give no indication that jaundiced rats surviving the testing period had neural hearing loss.

Experiments were conducted to assess the contribution of place mechanisms to the effect of rise--fall time on wave V of the human brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER). Noise bursts of 4- and 10-ms duration were presented at various rise-fall times (0, 1, 2, and 5 ms). Subtractive high-pass masking techniques were used to determine the effect of rise time as a function of derived-band frequency. In general, increasing rise time prolonged wave V latency but did not affect amplitude. Rise-time effects did not depend on derived-band frequency and similar effects were seen in the unmasked cond

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is an alternative non-invasive method for the electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve with the goal of treating several neuropsychiatric disorders. The objective of this study is to assess the effects of tVNS on cerebral cortex activity in healthy volunteers using resting-state microstates and power spectrum electroencephalography (EEG) analysis. Eight male subjects aged 25-45 years were recruited in this randomized sham-controlled double-blind study with cross-over design. Real tVNS was administered at the left external acoustic meatus, while sh

The dysfunction of astrocytic inwardly rectifying potassium (Kir) 4.1 channels, which mediate the spatial potassium-buffering function of astrocytes, is known to be involved in the development of epilepsy. Here, we analyzed the Kir4.1 expressional changes in Leucine-Rich Glioma-Inactivated 1 (Lgi1) mutant rats, which is a model of autosomal dominant lateral temporal lobe epilepsy in humans, to clarify the role of astrocytic Kir4.1 channels in Lgi1-related epileptogenesis. Priming acoustic stimulation (at postnatal day 16) conferred seizure susceptibility on Lgi1 mutant rats, which evoked audio…

Microtia and atresia cause significant conductive hearing loss of up to 60 dB HL. The bilateral cases suffer from severely restricted communication abilities and require immediate acoustic stimulation. There is also growing evidence that unilateral cases benefit from an early and selective stimulation of the affected side. Hearing restoration can be performed in selected cases of minor malformation by classic middle ear reconstruction. However, the majority of patients presumably benefit better from a hearing aid. There are 3 main types: active middle ear implants, active bone conduction impla…

Pathogenic bacteria in infected microenvironments can severely disrupt the normal progression of wound healing. Sono-responsive nanomaterials have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics for combating bacterial infections. Despite the advantageous sono-excited antibacterial properties of n-type barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO), developing bioheterojunctions (bioHJs) with compatible sono-physical characteristics remains a key strategy for achieving superior sono-antibacterial efficiency. Here, we constructed a novel PN-bioHJ by integrating two-dimensional p-type black phosph

Recent studies on loudness perception of binaural broadband signals in hearing impaired listeners found large individual differences, suggesting the use of such signals in hearing aid fitting. Likewise, clinical cochlear implant (CI) fitting with narrowband/single-electrode signals might cause suboptimal loudness perception in bilateral and bimodal CI listeners. Here spectral and binaural loudness summation in normal hearing (NH) listeners, bilateral CI (biCI) users, and unilateral CI (uCI) users with normal hearing in the unaided ear was investigated to assess the relevance of binaural/bilate

An important factor that may play a role in speech recognition by individuals with cochlear implants is that electrically stimulated nerves respond with a much higher level of synchrony than is normally observed in acoustically stimulated nerves. Recent work has indicated that the addition of noise to an electrical stimulus may result in neural responses whose statistical characteristics are more similar to those observed in acoustically driven neurons. Psychophysical data have indicated that performance on some tasks might also be enhanced by the addition of noise. However, little theoretical
