Understanding Human Neural Control of Short-term Gait Adaptation to the Split-belt Treadmill.

Many studies of split-belt treadmill adaptation have been focused on the biomechanical changes that occur in response to walking on belts at different speeds. This process of adaptation, and the ensuing aftereffects that are present when participants return to typical treadmill walking, have inspired the potential use of the split-belt treadmill as a rehabilitation tool. However, a full systematic review of the current split-belt treadmill literature has not yet been published to consolidate what is known about how the human central nervous system (CNS) controls adaptation to this type of symm

Microbe Profile: Cryptococcus neoformans species complex.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a lethal fungus disguised in a polysaccharide coat. It can remain dormant in the host for decades prior to reactivation, causing systemic cryptococcosis in humans and other mammals. Cryptococcus deploys a multitude of traits to adapt to and survive within the host, including immunosuppression, an ability to replicate intra- and extra-cellularly in phagocytes, changes in morphology and ploidy, a predilection to infect the CNS, and the capacity to utilize neurotransmitters and unique carbon sources available in the brain. These pathogenic strategies displayed by this f

Rapid spatial oculomotor updating across saccades is malleable.

The oculomotor system uses a sophisticated updating mechanism to adjust for large retinal displacements which occur with every saccade. Previous studies have shown that updating operates rapidly and starts before saccade is initiated. Here we used saccade adaptation to alter life-long expectations about how a saccade changes the location of an object on the retina. Participants made a sequence of one horizontal and one vertical saccade and ignored an irrelevant distractor. The time-course of oculomotor updating was estimated using saccade curvature of the vertical saccade, relative to the dist

The skin of birds' feet: Morphological adaptations of the plantar surface.

The skin of the foot provides the interface between the bird and the substrate. The foot morphology involves the bone shape and the integument that is in contact with the substrate. The podotheca is a layer of keratinized epidermis forming scales that extends from the tarsometatarsus to the toe extremities. It varies in size, shape, amount of overlap and interacts with the degree of fusion of the toes (syndactyly). A study of toe shape and the podotheca provides insights on the adaptations of perching birds. Our analysis is based on micro-CT scans and scanning electron microscopy images of 21

Is it advantageous for Atlantic salmon to be triploid at lower temperatures?

Marine organisms living at low temperatures tend to have larger genomes and larger cells which suggest that these traits can be beneficial in colder environments. In fish, triploidy (three complete sets of chromosomes) can be induced experimentally following fertilization, which provides a model system to investigate the hypothesis that larger cells and genomes offers a physiological advantage at low temperatures. We tested this hypothesis by measuring metabolic rates and swimming performance of diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) post smolts acclimated to 3 or 10.5 °C. At 10.5

Synchronization of a Removable Optical Element with an Eye Tracker: Test Case for Heterophoria Measurement.

PURPOSE: Heterophoria describes the deviation of the optical axes in the absence of binocular fusion. Eye trackers (ET) can provide an objective assessment but are not broadly used clinically. We examined the feasibility of combining an infrared (IR) pass-filter, IR detector, and an off-the-shelf ET. The proposed setup was validated against the broadly used cover test (CT). Furthermore, the setup was used to examine whether testing conditions can affect the measurements. METHODS: An IR detector was attached to a handheld IR-pass filter that blocks visible light to provide occlusion while pass

How cerebellar motor learning keeps saccades accurate.

The neuronal substrate underlying the learning of a sophisticated task has been difficult to study. However, the advent of a behavioral paradigm that deceives the saccadic system into thinking it is making an error has allowed the mechanisms of the adaptation that corrects this error to be revealed in a primate. The neural elements that fashion the command signal for the generation of accurate saccades involve subcortical structures in the brain stem and cerebellum. In this review we show that sites in both those structures also are involved with the gradual adaptation of saccade size, a form

Oxygen and brain death; back from the brink.

NEW FINDINGS: • What is the topic of this review? To explore the unique evolutionary origins of the human brain and critically appraise its energy budget, including limits of oxygen and glucose deprivation during anoxia and ischaemia. • What advances does it highlight? The brain appears to be more resilient to substrate depletion than traditionally thought, highlighting greater resilience and an underappreciated capacity for functional recovery. ABSTRACT: The human brain has evolved into an unusually large, complex and metabolically expensive organ that relies entirely on a continuous supply

An impressive capacity for cold tolerance plasticity protects against ionoregulatory collapse in the disease vector Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is largely confined to tropical and subtropical regions, but its range has recently been spreading to colder climates. As insect biogeography is tied to environmental temperature, understanding the limits of A. aegypti thermal tolerance and their capacity for phenotypic plasticity is important in predicting the spread of this species. In this study, we report on the chill coma onset (CCO) and recovery time (CCRT), as well as low-temperature survival phenotypes of larvae and adults of A. aegypti that developed or were acclimated to 15°C (cold) or 25°C (warm). Cold acc

Competition experiments between Brettanomyces bruxellensis strains reveal specific adaptation to sulfur dioxide and complex interactions at intraspecies level.

Recent studies have suggested a strong niche adaptation for Brettanomyces bruxellensis strains according to human-related fermentation environments, including beer, wine and bioethanol. This is further supported by a correlation between B. bruxellensis genetic grouping and tolerance to SO2, the main antimicrobial used in wine. The allotriploid AWRI1499-like cluster, in particular, shows high SO2 tolerance suggesting that the genetic configuration observed for these strains may confer a selective advantage in winemaking conditions. To test this hypothesis, we evaluated the relative selective ad

Adaptation of Alpha-Papillomavirus over Millennia.

Papillomaviruses (PVs) are a group of small DNA viruses that, with around 350 million years of evolution, acquired the capacity of infecting a broad range of vertebrates, including humans. To date, more than 300 PV types have been isolated. Viruses that have a long common evolutionary history with their host typically cause unapparent infections. However, in some Alpha-PV infections, lesions become apparent and may cause benign proliferative disorders or even malignant proliferative lesions of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, penis, and oropharynx. The incongruence observed between the topolog

High motor variability in DYT1 dystonia is associated with impaired visuomotor adaptation.

For the healthy motor control system, an essential regulatory role is maintaining the equilibrium between keeping unwanted motor variability in check whilst allowing informative elements of motor variability. Kinematic studies in children with generalised dystonia (due to mixed aetiologies) show that movements are characterised by increased motor variability. In this study, the mechanisms by which high motor variability may influence movement generation in dystonia were investigated. Reaching movements in the symptomatic arm of 10 patients with DYT1 dystonia and 12 age-matched controls were ca

Crocodiles Alter Skin Color in Response to Environmental Color Conditions.

Many species alter skin color to varying degrees and by different mechanisms. Here, we show that some crocodylians modify skin coloration in response to changing light and environmental conditions. Within the Family, Crocodylidae, all members of the genus Crocodylus lightened substantially when transitioned from dark enclosure to white enclosures, whereas Mecistops and Osteolaemus showed little/no change. The two members of the Family Gavialidae showed an opposite response, lightening under darker conditions, while all member of the Family Alligatoridae showed no changes. Observed color change

Optimal swimming strategies and behavioral plasticity of oceanic whitetip sharks.

Animal behavior should optimize the difference between the energy they gain from prey and the energy they spend searching for prey. This is all the more critical for predators occupying the pelagic environment, as prey is sparse and patchily distributed. We theoretically derive two canonical swimming strategies for pelagic predators, that maximize their energy surplus while foraging. They predict that while searching, a pelagic predator should maintain small dive angles, swim at speeds near those that minimize the cost of transport, and maintain constant speed throughout the dive. Using biolog

Physiology of static breath holding in elite apneists.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? This review provides an up-to-date assessment of the physiology involved with extreme static dry-land breath holding in trained apneists. What advances does it highlight? We specifically highlight the recent findings involved with the cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and metabolic function during a maximal breath hold in elite apneists. ABSTRACT: Breath-hold-related activities have been performed for centuries, but only recently, within the last ∼30 years, has it emerged as an increasingly popular competitive sport. In apnoea sport, competition r

Adaptations for Substrate Gleaning in Bats: The Pallid Bat as a Case Study.

Substrate gleaning is a foraging strategy in which bats use a mixture of echolocation, prey-generated sounds, and vision to localize and hunt surface-dwelling prey. Many substrate-gleaning species depend primarily on prey-generated noise to hunt. Use of echolocation is limited to general orientation and obstacle avoidance. This foraging strategy involves a different set of selective pressures on morphology, behavior, and auditory system organization of bats compared to the use of echolocation for both hunting and navigation. Gleaning likely evolved to hunt in cluttered environments and/or as a

Human tactile detection of within- and inter-finger spatiotemporal phase shifts of low-frequency vibrations.

When we touch an object, the skin copies its surface shape/texture, and this deformation pattern shifts according to the objects movement. This shift pattern directly encodes spatio-temporal "motion" information of the event, and has been detected in other modalities (e.g., inter-aural time differences for audition and first-order motion for vision). Since previous studies suggested that mechanoreceptor-afferent channels with small receptive field and slow temporal characteristics contribute to tactile motion perception, we tried to tap the spatio-temporal processor using low-frequency sine-wa

Burkholderia pseudomallei Adaptation for Survival in Stressful Conditions.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes melioidosis, which can be fatal in humans. Melioidosis is prevalent in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Ecological data have shown that this bacterium can survive as a free-living organism in environmental niches, such as soil and water, as well as a parasite living in host organisms, such as ameba, plants, fungi, and animals. This review provides an overview of the survival and adaptation of B. pseudomallei to stressful conditions induced by hostile environmental factors, such as salinity, oxidati
