A case of complete ophthalmoplegia in herpes zoster ophthalmicus.

PURPOSE: To report a case with complete ophthalmoplegia after herpes zoster ophthalmicus. METHODS: A 70-year-old male patient visited a clinic because of vesicular eruptions over the left side of his face with severe pain. Drooping and severe swelling of the left eyelid were present, along with keratitis and uveitis. While the lid swelling and uveitis were improving, external ophthalmoplegia and exophthalmos were discovered. Intramuscular injections of dexamethasone 5 mg were given for 10 days, followed by oral administration of prednisolone at a dosage of 15 mg for two weeks and 10 mg for tw

Subconjunctival antimicrobial poloxamer gel for treatment of corneal ulceration in stranded California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

OBJECTIVE: Corneal ulcers are commonly encountered in pinnipeds. Prolonged oral antibiotics and topical ophthalmic solutions may not be practical to administer, and novel treatment techniques are desired. Thermodynamic gels are a potential solution because they hold antimicrobials at the site of injection, slowly releasing drug. This study investigated the clinical efficacy of antibiotic-impregnated poloxamer gel in management of corneal ulceration. ANIMAL STUDIED: Twenty-six California sea lions undergoing rehabilitation at The Marine Mammal Center. PROCEDURES: A poloxamer gel mixed with 2%

Uveitis: a sight-threatening disease which can impact all systems.

Uveitis describes a group of conditions characterised by intraocular inflammation. The term uveitis technically describes inflammation of the uvea which comprises the iris, ciliary body and choroid, however now encompasses inflammation of adjacent intraocular structures such as the retina, vitreous and optic nerve. Uveitis is a significant cause of blindness worldwide, but its impact is generally underappreciated due to a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition among the public and most non-ophthalmic healthcare professionals. In this review, we provide an introduction to uveitis

Recent progress in ocular drug delivery for posterior segment disease: emphasis on transscleral iontophoresis.

Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, posterior uveitis, and retinitis due to glaucoma are leading causes of vision loss in the United States and other developed countries. Because these diseases are located in the posterior segment of the eye, topical application of ophthalmic medicines is of limited benefit, since topically applied drugs rarely reach therapeutic levels in the affected posterior tissues such as the choroid and retina. Intravitreal injections can deliver drugs to the posterior segment without the side effects associated with systemic administration. However,

Color doppler imaging of ocular blood flow after topical ketanserin.

The authors investigated the effect of ketanserin 0.5% eye drops on intraocular pressure and orbital blood flow in some healthy volunteers. Ketanserin is a selective antagonist of serotonin S(2) receptors; moreover, it produces an alpha(1)-blocking effect. It causes a systemic reduction of blood pressure and capillary vasodilatation. Three hours after topical administration of ketanserin 0.5%, the intraocular pressure was decreased by about 14% from the baseline. At the same time, we observed by color Doppler imaging that the mean percent increase in the peak systolic velocity in the ophthalmi

Fabrication of a drug delivery system that enhances antifungal drug corneal penetration.

Fungal keratitis (FK) remains a severe eye disease, and effective therapies are limited by drug shortages and critical ocular barriers. Despite the high antifungal potency and broad spectrum of econazole, its strong irritant and insolubility in water hinder its ocular application. We designed and fabricated a new drug delivery system based on a polymeric vector for the ocular antifungal application of econazole. This novel system integrates the advantages of its constituent units and exhibits superior comprehensive performance. Using the new system, drug content was significantly increased mor

Use of Latency Models to Assess the Association between Use of Topical Corticosteroids (CS) and Incident Cataract among Eyes of Patients with Uveitis.

PURPOSE: Cataract is a leading cause of visual impairment related to uveitis. Time-to-development of cataract following topical corticosteroid use (CS) is not well characterized. We hypothesized that the time of greatest cataract risk following the use of topical CS could be identified using latency modelling. METHODS: Eyes with anterior uveitis were followed over time for cataract in a large retrospective cohort study. In addition to uveitis activity (AC) and topical CS use at each visit, other covariates predictive of cataract incidence were available. Cox regression analyses with time-depe
