A Developmental Study of MeCP2 with Core and Linker Histones Indicates a Dynamic Change During Adolescent Brain Development in a Region- and Strain-Specific Manner in Mice.

Chromatin organization during postnatal development is very important for establishing neuronal function and may be disrupted in neurodevelo … 6 mice in two different strains, in the liver, cerebellum, and cerebral hemispheres obtained at two adolescent developmental stages [P21 (postnatal day 21) and P56]. We show that both strains have significant cerebral-specific increases in MeCP2 and H1, while H3 levels remain consistent. The CD1 strain exhibited hepatic H1 elevation between early (P21) and late (P56) ad …

Associations between polygenic scores for cognitive and non-cognitive factors of educational attainment and measures of behavior, psychopathology, and neuroimaging in the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment (EduA) is correlated with life outcomes, and EduA itself is influenced by both cognitive and non-cognitive factors. A recent study performed a 'genome-wide association study (GWAS) by subtraction,' subtracting genetic effects for cognitive performance from an educational attainment GWAS to create orthogonal 'cognitive' and 'non-cognitive' factors. These cognitive and non-cognitive factors showed associations with behavioral health outcomes in adults; however, whether these correlations are present during childhood is unclear. METHODS: Using data from up to 5

Associations Between Polygenic Scores for Cognitive and Non-cognitive Factors of Educational Attainment and Measures of Behavior, Psychopathology, and Neuroimaging in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Both cognitive and non-cognitive (e.g., traits like curiosity) factors are critical for social and emotional functioning and independently predict educational attainment. These factors are heritable and genetically correlated with a range of health-relevant traits and behaviors in adulthood (e.g., risk-taking, psychopathology). However, whether these associations are present during adolescence, and to what extent these relationships diverge, could have implications for adolescent health and well-being. METHODS: Using data from 5,517 youth of European ancestry from the ongoing Adol

The Political, Research, Programmatic, and Social Responses to Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the 25 Years Since the International Conference on Population and Development.

Among the ground-breaking achievements of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was its call to place adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) on global health and development agendas. This article reviews progress made in low- and middle-income countries in the 25 years since the ICPD in six areas central to ASRH-adolescent pregnancy, HIV, child marriage, violence against women and girls, female genital mutilation, and menstrual hygiene and health. It also examines the ICPD's contribution to the progress made. The article presents epidemiologic levels and t

Development and short-term evaluation of a novel semi-rigid brace for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Results from a multicenter prospective observational study of the first 60 patients.

BACKGROUND: Spinal bracing remains the gold standard for conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, poor adherence often limits treatment efficacy. The development of a brace that enhances compliance while maintaining sufficient corrective force is crucial. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a novel semi-rigid brace for AIS based on wearing time and correction rate. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter prospective observational study. METHODS: We enrolled patients who met the following Scoliosis Research Society criteria for brace

Maternal overweight during the (Pre)pregnancy period and the development of disordered eating behaviors in adolescent offspring: Investigating the role of amygdala volume and BMI in childhood.

Research suggests that maternal overweight during pregnancy increases the risk of obesity and mental health issues in offspring, potentially by affecting fetal (brain) development. This study investigated the relationship between maternal BMI in the (pre-)pregnancy period and offspring's disordered eating in adolescence. We hypothesized maternal BMI to be positively associated with disordered eating behavior in offspring, partially mediated by childhood BMI and amygdala volume. Data was leveraged from Generation R, a prospective birth cohort in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (N = 3112). Maternal p

Can we diagnose mental disorders in children? A large-scale assessment of machine learning on structural neuroimaging of 6916 children in the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

BACKGROUND: Prediction of mental disorders based on neuroimaging is an emerging area of research with promising first results in adults. However, research on the unique demographic of children is underrepresented and it is doubtful whether findings obtained on adults can be transferred to children. METHODS: Using data from 6916 children aged 9-10 in the multicenter Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, we extracted 136 regional volume and thickness measures from structural magnetic resonance images to rigorously evaluate the capabilities of machine learning to predict 10 different psy

Developing a systems-based programme theory for reducing night-time interactive electronic device use and improving sleep among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent night-time use of interactive electronic devices (IEDs) is increasingly linked to poor sleep, mental health challenges, and reduced academic performance. However, existing interventions often overlook the complex systems shaping these behaviours. This study presents a first-of-its-kind systems-based programme theory for CLOCK OFF - a peer influence intervention aimed at reducing night-time IED use and improving adolescent sleep - created through novel participatory mapping activities and analyses, which involved adolescents, parents and teachers. METHODS: We conducted f

Childhood socio-emotional and cognitive development and adolescents NEET (not in education, employment or training): findings from the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing concern about the increasing number of young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) globally. This study investigates the impact of concurrent cognitive and socio-emotional development trajectories in childhood on NEET status in adolescence in a UK cohort. METHOD: We analysed longitudinal data on 8368 children from the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Exposure trajectories of cognitive and socio-emotional development from age 3 to 14 years were characterised using group-based multi-trajectory models. We used Poisson regression to examine assoc

Development of seropositivity to SARS-CoV-2 over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in adolescents in a longitudinal cohort study in Cebu, Philippines.

COVID-19 was first reported in the Philippines in January 2020 and the country experienced several COVID-19 waves. Little is known on the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 among adolescents in a developing country such as the Philippines. In this study, we incorporated testing for acute COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity in an ongoing dengue study of 9- to 14-year-old participants enrolled in 2017. Acute febrile episodes were detected through active surveillance and a nasopharyngeal swab was obtained for SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR. Before COVID-19 vaccination was offered, we tested a subset of sera obta

Dynamics of Fear-Generalization Processes and Their Predictive Value for the Development of Anxiety-Related Psychopathology in Adolescents and Adults: A Study Protocol for a Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety disorders involve abnormal fear learning and exaggerated generalization, proposed as potential risk factors. However, it is unclear whether these processes reflect stable vulnerability markers or symptoms of psychopathology, as most research relies on cross-sectional correlations and few longitudinal studies assess their predictive role in anxiety. Furthermore, little is known about the test-retest reliability of fear learning paradigms, despite their suggested function as trait-like markers for anxiety. METHODS: This longitudinal study reassesses initially healthy adults

Development of a Short Symbol-Based Screening Instrument for Internet Gaming Disorder: The Inclusion of Videogame in the Self (IVS) Scale for Children and Adolescents.

Accurate screening for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in children and adolescents remains a challenge in routine clinical settings. This study evaluated the psychometric properties and diagnostic utility of the Inclusion of Videogame in the Self (IVS) scale, a brief pictorial tool assessing the perceived fusion between self and video game. A clinical sample of 189 children and adolescents (M = 13.0 years, SD = 3.2) completed the IVS, IGD, and Social Media Disorder (SMD) measures. While the five-item scale showed a solid factor structure and reliability, diagnostic accuracy was limited. A singl

Mapping item-level dynamics of positive youth development in Chinese adolescents: A four-wave cross-lagged panel network study.

Positive Youth Development (PYD) theory emphasizes strengths that emerge from person-context exchanges, yet item-level, time-ordered relations among PYD attributes (i.e., Competence, Confidence, Character, Caring, and Connection) remain unclear in high-pressure school systems. Using four-wave data from a cohort of grade 10 students in three public high schools in Shouguang, Shandong Province, China, we examined time-ordered relations among the 16-item Chinese Positive Youth Development-Very Short Form (PYD-VSF). At baseline, N = 2086 (Mage = 15.41, SD = 0.52; 53.74% girls); wave-level particip

Onset and development of chronic rhinosinusitis from infancy through adolescence in primary ciliary dyskinesia detected by longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging.

RATIONALE: A cross-sectional study employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of paranasal sinuses recently showed a high prevalence and extent of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in children with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). However, longitudinal imaging data on CRS onset and progression are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally evaluate CRS in PCD from infancy through adolescence with MRI. METHODS: 22 children with PCD (median baseline age 8.5 year, range 0.0-18.0 year) underwent a median of 3 (range 1-9) annual standardized paranasal sinus MRI examinations. MRI were assessed by 2 indepen

Does Loneliness Hurt? Effect of Loneliness on Inflammator Biomarkers, Appetite Hormone Regulation, and Cognitive Function Among Typically Developing Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The literature indicates that the prevalence of loneliness is increasing among adolescents. The role of loneliness in cognitive function, appetite hormone regulation, and inflamatory pathways among typically developing adolescents remains unclear. METHODS: We enrolled 78 adolescents without psychiatric disorders in our study. All participants underwent measurements of appetite hormone (e.g., insulin, leptin, and ghrelin) and inflammatory marker levels (e.g., C-reactive protein, interleukin [IL]-6, and tumour necrosis factor-α) as well as cognitive function assessments (e.g., the W

Developing a skill-based intervention to address social health needs of adolescents and young adults with cancer: an ORBIT Phase 1 Study.

BACKGROUND: Few interventions have improved social health of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer. Following the obesity-related behavioral intervention trials model, we developed a skill-based social needs module for integration within the Promoting Resilience in Stress Management (PRISM)  behavioral intervention. METHODS: The social needs module targeting social relationship coping efficacy included behavioral skills adapted to AYAs. The module was refined through 2 separate pilot studies. For Study 1, AYAs 12-24 years old completed the module and a feedback interview. Rapid asse

Developing an Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Intervention for Adolescents With Anxiety Disorders: Design, Usability, and Initial Evaluation of the CoolMinds Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Digital mental health interventions may help increase access to psychological treatment for adolescents with anxiety disorders. However, many clinical evaluations of digital treatments report low adherence and engagement and high dropout rates, which remain challenges when the interventions are implemented in routine care. Involving intended end users in the development process through user-centered design methods may help maximize user engagement and establish the validity of interventions for implementation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the methods used to develop a n

Influence of BMI percentile on craniofacial morphology and development in adolescents,Part II: elevated BMI is associated with larger final facial dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of adolescent obesity has markedly increased from 5.2% in 1974 to 19.7% in 2021. Understanding the impacts of obesity is important to orthodontists, as growth acceleration and greater pre-pubertal facial dimensions are seen in children with elevated body mass index (BMI). METHODS: To identify whether adolescent obesity shifts the timing and rate of craniofacial growth resulting in larger post-treatment dimensions, we evaluated cephalometric outcomes in overweight/obese (BMI > 85%, n = 168) and normal weight (n = 158) adolescents (N = 326 total). Cephalometric measuremen

Realization of affiliation goals, interpersonal identity development, and well-being: effects of the implicit affiliation motive among German and Zambian adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Across various cultural contexts, success in goal realization relates to individuals' well-being. Moreover, commitment to and successful pursuance of goals are crucial when searching for a meaningful identity in adolescence. However, individuals' goals differ in how much they match their implicit motive dispositions. We hypothesized that successful pursuance of affiliation goals positively relates to commitment-related dimensions of interpersonal identity development (domain: close friends) that, in turn, predict adolescents' level of well-being. However, we further assumed that
