Eighth nerve fibers from the saccule, utricle, lagena, and the anterior, horizontal, and posterior semicircular canals of a cichlid fish were traced to the octavolateralis region of the brainstem using HRP and degeneration methods. The anterior, magnocellular, descending, and posterior nuclei of the octavus column receive inputs from all endorgans, whereas the tangential nucleus receives projections only from the utricle and semicircular canals. The most rostral projections only from the utricle and semicircular canals. The most rostral projection from each endorgan is found in the eminentia g

This study examined the effect of a warning and of prior instruction on the early components of the cerebral potential produced by stimulation of the left posterior tibial nerve at the ankle. Early components of this potential are dominated by the activity in muscle afferents from the small muscles of the foot. In 50% of presentations, the stimulus to the posterior tibial nerve was preceded by an auditory cue. In some sequences subjects were required to move toes on the left foot immediately the stimulus was detected. Although subjects responded more rapidly to shocks which were preceded by a

Results of a pathomorphological, experimental and clinical study designed to ascertain morphological changes associated with impairment of vital visceral functions following spinal cord trauma are presented. Clinical manifestations of such disorders were studied in 127 patients with complicated vertebral fractures. Further investigations involved postmortem examination of the brain of four patients with complete anatomical rupture of the spinal cord at the level of CV, CVI, and LI segments as well as the brain of 18 mature cats with various types of spinal cord resection which were treated by

Hypoxia evoked by mechanical asphyxia first of all disturbs the generation of potentials in pyramidal tract neurons. Hypoxic work, therefore, causes inadequate contraction of somatic muscles, a difficulty in work performance and respiratory discomfort. Concurrently, the disturbance of the pyramidal tract disinhibits the respiratory center of the brain stem with a result of excessive hyperventilation during hypoxic work.

Following lesions of various parts of the cat cerebral cortex, the distribution of degenerating fibers in the pontine nuclei was mapped in drawings of serial transverse and horizontal sections of Fink and Heimer. All parts of the cerebrum give rise to the corticopontine fibers and each functionally uniform area has its particular projection zones in the pons. Thus, it has been shown that the pontine projection zones from the sensorimotor, auditory, orbital, cingulate and "association" cortices are arranged in longitudinal columns throughout the pons, mostly in well delimited columns, while tho

Abdominal pain is a debilitating symptom of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Despite advances in understanding IBD pathology, the mechanisms underlying pain remain poorly defined. While studies of tissue biopsies from IBD patients and rodent models have highlighted the roles of proinflammatory cytokines and proteases in pain signaling, these approaches predominantly capture host-derived mediators, overlooking the broader luminal environment influenced by the microbiota. Given the compromised barrier in IBD leading to increased mucosal permeability, examining the luminal milieu would character

Descending corticospinal and afferent pathways underlying spinally evoked motor potential both contribute to motor output, yet how their interaction at the spinal and peripheral levels is organized spatially within a muscle remains unclear. This study investigated the spatiotemporal characteristics of descending modulation of spinally evoked motor potentials by combining subthreshold transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) delivered at the L1-L2 interspinous space in nine participants and at the T12-L1 interspinous space in one participant. In…

Cell therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) is aimed to replace the degenerated midbrain dopamine (mDA) neurons and restore DA neurotransmission in the denervated forebrain targets. A limitation of the intrastriatal grafting approach, which is currently used in clinical trials, is that the mDA neurons are implanted into the target area, in most cases the putamen, and not in the ventral midbrain where they normally reside. This ectopic location of the cells may limit their functionality due to the lack of appropriate afferent regulation from the host. Homotopic transplantation, into the substanti

Angina pectoris is important because of its association with heart disease and risk of death. Historically after Heberden's account of angina in 1772, the association of pain with coronary artery disease quickly followed. Within a few years, Burns suggested an etiological role for ischemia. Subsequently, theories of differential myocardial stretch dominated thinking until Lewis' chemical hypothesis in 1932, in which the local release of chemical substances during ischemia was seen as the cause of pain. This review considers how ischemia at the tissue level triggers activation of afferent nocic

Hypothalamic obesity (HyOb) was first defined as the significant polyphagia and weight gain that occurs after extensive suprasellar operations for excision of hypothalamic tumours. However, polyphagia and weight gain complicate other disorders related to the hypothalamus, including those that cause structural damage to the hypothalamus like tumours, trauma, radiotherapy; genetic disorders such as Prader-Willi syndrome; side effects of psychotropic drugs; and mutations in several genes involved in hypothalamic satiety signalling. Moreover, 'simple' obesity is associated with polymorphisms in se

Control of expression of molecular receptors for chemical messengers and modulation of these receptors' activity are now established as ways to alter cellular reaction. This paper extends these mechanisms to the arena of pathological pain by presenting the hypothesis that increased expression of alpha-adrenergic receptors in primary afferent neurons is part of the etiology of pain in classical causalgia. It is argued that partial denervation by lesion of peripheral nerve or by tissue destruction induces a change in peripheral nociceptors, making them excitable by sympathetic activity and adren

Neural circuitry generating locomotor rhythm and pattern is located in the spinal cord. Most spinal cord injuries (SCIs) occur above the lev … otor rhythm and pattering, remain intact after SCI. However, SCI induces plasticity in both sensory afferent pathways and serotonergic modulation, enhancing the activation and excitation of Shox2 interneurons. Our findings will impact future strategies looking to harness these changes with the ultimate goal of restoring functional locomotion after SCI.

Motoneuron (MN) cell death is the histopathologic hallmark of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), although MN loss seems to be a late event. Conversely, disruption of afferent synapses on MNs has been shown to occur early in SMA. Using a mouse model of severe SMA (SMNΔ7), we examined the mechanisms involved in impairment of central synapses. We found that MNs underwent progressive degeneration in the course of SMA, with MN loss still occurring at late stages. Loss of afferent inputs to SMA MNs was detected at embryonic stages, long before MN death. Reactive microgliosis and astrogliosis were presen

Following injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the wall of the gallbladder of cats, HRP-positive cells were found bilaterally in dorsal root ganglia T2-L3 (T2-L2, and T3-L2/L3 also observed in a few cats) and nodose ganglia. In about 33% of animals labelled cells were also distributed in cervical dorsal root ganglia C5-C7. Labelled cells were more frequently localized on the right side than the left. There was no apparent change in numbers of labelled cells in the nodose ganglion (NG) on either side following greater and lesser splanchnicotomy or section of the right phrenic nerve or

Studies were performed on spherules of approximately 100-300 micrometer in diameter obtained from in vitro cultures of reaggregates of embryonic fragments of cerebellum from 10-12 day-incubated chick embryos, dissociated with trypsin and cultivated in a rotating shaker for a maximum of 21 days. The differentiated neurons within these spherules included a few Purkinje cells, many granule cells and type II Golgi cells, as well as many glial cells. Zones rich in synaptic knobs and other simple synaptic structures as well as complex synaptic systems with numerous active points of contact, were vis

Short-term and long-term blood pressure (BP) regulation and its maintenance at levels adequate to perfuse tissue organs involve an integrated action of multiple neural, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine and local tissue control systems. In the recent year, there has been a growing interest in the understanding of neural pathways key to BP control. For instance, through major advances in studies using both anesthetized and conscious animals, our knowledge of the essential neural mechanisms that subserve the baroreceptor, cardiopulmonary and chemoreceptor reflexes, and those evoked by the activat
