The butenolide, 3-methyl-2H-furo[2,3-c]pyran-2-one (1), is a major compound in smoke responsible for promoting the seed germination of a wide range of plant species. We now report the structure of five alkyl substituted variants of 1 that are also present in smoke. The concentrations of these analogues, as well as that of 1, in a typical smoke-water solution have been determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) purification followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The factors influencing the formation, organizations, and temperature ranges of the smectic phases of a structurally diverse family of phosphonium salts have been examined. Phosphate esters are important compounds in living systems. Their biological reactions with alcohol and thiol nucleophiles are catalyzed by a large superfamily of phosphatase enzymes. However, very little is known about the intrinsic reactivity of these nucleophiles with phosphorus centers. We have performed ab initio calculations on the thiolysis and alcoholysis at phosphorus of trimethyl phosphate, dimethyl phenyl phosphate, methyl phosphate, and phenyl phosphate. Neisseria gonorrhoeae lacks several common DNA repair pathways found in other organisms. As recent evidence had indicated that gonococci use recombinational repair to repair UV-induced DNA lesions, this study examined whether the gonococcal RecJ homologue contributes in this repair capacity. Infection, inflammation and allergy are characterized by an infiltration of neutrophils or eosinophils in the tissue and are associated with an increased level of lysophospholipids. In this study it is shown that labeled 1-O-alkyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphorylcholine (lyso-paf) binds to intact human blood neutrophils. Unlabeled lyso-paf(500 nM) inhibits the binding of [3H]lyso-paf to neutrophils in the presence of fatty acid-free serum albumin (0.25%). A linear Scatchard plot analysis of the specific [3H]lyso-paf binding to neutrophils revealed a KD value of 9.2 nM with 4,100 lyso-paf binding sites

Novel 3-alkyl-2-aryl-3H- naphth [1,2-d]imidazoles were synthesized and evaluated as antiinflammatory agents in the carrageenin-induced paw edema, cotton pellet induced granuloma, and adjuvant-induced polyarthritis assays in rats. The analgesic, antipyretic, and gastroulcerogenic effects were also tested. Structure-activity relationships are discussed. One of the compounds, 3-(1-methylethyl)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3H- naphth [1,2-d]imidazole (35), was selected for clinical trials as a nonacidic antiinflammatory and analgesic agent.

We evaluated the occurrence of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANL) among 1399 women with ovarian cancer who were treated in five randomized clinical trials. Of the 1399 women, 998 had been treated with alkylating agents, and among these, 12 cases of ANL were observed; the expected number was 0.11. Ten patients with ANL had received melphalan, and two chlorambucil. ANL was not observed in 401 women who had been treated with surgery or radiation or both, without alkylating agents. The synthesis and the structure of some aminomethyl derivatives of 1-cyclohexylbarbituric acids, obtained by the Mannich reaction, are described. Acids, containing a pyrrolidinomethyl group in the position 5 were found to have the barbituric ring in the enolic form, stabilized by a hydrogen bond with the pyrrolidine nitrogen atom. Some of the described compounds displayed antiinflammatory activity.

The synthesis of succinimide derivatives in which alkylating groups have been attached to the imide nitrogen or to the 3 position of the ring is described. The synthesis of one bis-alkylating derivative 19 is also described. The alkylating groups used were (a) alpha-haloacetyl, (b) alpha-haloacetamido, (c) maleamyl, and (d) maleimido. These compounds were prepared as potential long-acting anticonvulsants. None of the compounds showed activity against maximal electroshock or metrazole-induced seizures.

A total of 120 patients with polycythaemia vera (PV) were observed between 1971-1976. 8 of them developed acute leukaemia (AL). The clinical course, cytogenetic and morphologic findings of these patients are described in detail. Alkylating agents were the main treatment for all patients who developed AL. 4 of them obtained alkylating drugs alone.
