Since one of the greatest reservoirs of allergens is the blanket, we assessed mite allergen levels in dust collected from five blankets by vacuuming before and after dry cleaning with perchlorethylene and compared the results with five control blankets. We studied the effect of "irritants" on the response to an allergen in 15 patients. Dilutions of allergens were applied in duplicate, and 24 hours later they were removed and sodium lauryl sulfate (11 subjects) or anthralin (dithranol) (four subjects) was applied for a further 24 hours to one set of patches. To examine the occurrence of latex allergen in condoms and to study the symptoms caused by contact with condoms, 46 patients with latex-glove contact urticaria (LGCU) were investigated. 7 (24%) of the 29 patients with a history of condom use had experienced local swelling and/or pruritus during intercourse, confirming that condoms can cause local symptoms in latex allergic subjects. In the course of 18 months, allergic bronchial asthma due to wild silk was diagnosed in 26 patients (19 women, 7 men) of the relatively high mean age at onset of 34 years.
