The infective third-stage larvae of the hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale infect their human hosts by active skin invasion, but A. duodenale is in addition capable of oral infection. The behaviour of the larvae when crawling on surfaces has already been described. Here we analyse in various in vitro systems the other behavioural invasion phases: activation, penetration, and orientation within the host. The larvae normally remained in a motionless, energy-saving, resting posture. An activation to sinusoidal locomotion was stimulated in both species by similar cues such as t

Vaccination of mice with either third-stage Ancylostoma caninum infective hookworm larvae (L3) or alum-precipitated recombinant Ancylostoma secreted protein 1 from A. caninum (Ac-ASP-1) results in protection against hookworm challenge infections. Vaccine protection is manifested by reductions in lung hookworm burdens at 48 h postchallenge. Mice actively immunized 4 times with Ac-ASP-1 also exhibited reductions in hookworm burden in the muscles. Hookworm burden reductions from Ac-ASP-1 immunization were associated with elevations in all immunoglobulin subclasses, with the greatest rise observed

The efficacy of doramectin treatment on arrested A. caninum larvae during early pregnancy of bitches was examined. Four bitches were percutaneously infected with 20,000 third-stage larvae of A. caninum on the day of conception and treated subcutaneously with 1 mg doramectin per kg body weight on day 30 of pregnancy. Four infected untreated pregnant bitches served as controls. A single application of dormectin substantially reduced the number of somatic larvae in bitches and the number of intestinal stages in bitches and puppies. However, it did not completely prevent lactogenic transmission of

Hookworms cause severe anemia and malnutrition in developing countries of the tropics, with an estimated one billion people infected worldwide. An in vitro system that models the early events of infection has provided new information about the linkage between the infectious process and the parasite's developmental biology. The cloning and expression of Ancylostoma secreted protein, ASP 1 - a secreted molecule associated with these developmental processes - is an example of how this system allows us to dissect the infectious process at the molecular level.

The relation between the level of serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE) percentage of T-lymphocyte and egg counts was studied in dogs infected with Ancylostoma duodenale. The serum IgG levels were significantly high and a marked significance was noticed also in the levels of IgM and IgE. An inverse relationship between the concentration of IgG and egg count and a direct association between the percentage of T-lymphocyte and IgG level was proved.

It was investigated whether there is a linear correlation between the number of applied infective larvae of Ancylostoma caninum and the number of larvae excreted by bitches with the milk. The investigations were carried out with nine bitches that were infected percutaneously each with 5,000, 10,000 or 20,000 third stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum at the day of conception. A clear linear correlation between the number of applied infective larvae of Ancylostoma caninum and the number of larvae excreted with the milk could be demonstrated only for the first week of lactation. Regarding the tot

The aims of this study were to analyze the seasonal distribution of infective larvae on the soil surface, to determine whether numbers of infective larvae near faeces were related to the faecal egg count of individuals, and to relate the distribution of larvae to environmental characteristics. Larvae were recovered from damp pads, applied to the soil surface in an annulus around fresh, identified stools of individuals who were participating in a larger epidemiological study. This provided an estimate of exposure to infection at the time of defaecation. Transmission was restricted to the rainy

Hookworm infection and blood changes relationship in the 937 infected persons in 6 villages of Dezful area in Khuzestan, South West of Iran, were studied. The most prevalent intestinal helminths in the area were Ascaris lumbricoides 21%, Ancylostoma duodenale 35%, Trichostrongylus spp. 17% and Hymenolepis nana 17%. Only 2% of the hookworm infected persons showed high intensity of infection which accompanied with rather low haemoglobin level of 9.4 g/100. The eosinophil level was 12-d16.5%. The results of this study indicates that the anaemia produced by hookworm infection in Khuzestan is not s

Three mice groups were infected with various repeated doses and other four groups with single doses of Ancylostoma caninum larvae. Serum samples collected at various intervals were analysed electrophoretically. The results were compared first with an uninfected control group and then with those of the corresponding non-immunized single-dose-infected groups. Remarkably decreased values of albumin, increased beta globulin and increased total globulins with a decreased A/G ratio were observed. There was no correlation between the decrease in albumin and the increase in beta globulin found in the

Intestinal parasites not only cause diarrheal illnesses but may also cause significant malabsorption in man. Separation of true malabsorption caused by a particular parasite from other factors that may coexist with and even mimic malabsorption, such as malnutrition may be very difficult. Despite these problems, it appears that giardiasis, coccidiasis, strongyloidiasis and capillariasis cause malabsorption of many important nutrients. D. latum interfere with vitamin B12 absorption.

The prevalence of infection with Strongyloides fuelleborni and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), and the possible transmammary passage of these parasites, was studied in the people of a village in Bulapé, Zaire, Africa. Stool examinations revealed that 34% of 76 infants under 200 days of age were infected with S. fuelleborni and 8% were infected with hookworms. Infection rates in the general population were 44% for S. fuelleborni and 90% for hookworms. The examination of milk from nursing mothers revealed the presence of Strongyloides larvae in one case. The finding sug

Four infants are reported who manifested severe alimentary bleeding associated with evidence of massive acute hookworm infestation. The need to remember this parasite as a possible cause of melaena in infants in areas where it is endemic is stressed, as treatment is simple and effective.
