Assessing client needs in community veterinary care: a case study from WisCARES.

As community veterinary clinics expand across the United States, there is a growing recognition that services need to be aligned with the specific needs of clients and their companion animals, which may vary from one community to the next. WisCARES Community Clinic, which has served low-income pet owners in Dane County, Wisconsin for over a decade, conducted a comprehensive needs assessment in the summer of 2024 to re-evaluate the support required by its clientele. Through an interviewer-administered survey of 51 clients, conducted either in person or by phone, the study identified key areas f

Horses are sensitive to baby talk: pet-directed speech facilitates communication with humans in a pointing task and during grooming.

Pet-directed speech (PDS) is a type of speech humans spontaneously use with their companion animals. It is very similar to speech commonly used when talking to babies. A survey on social media showed that 92.7% of the respondents used PDS with their horse, but only 44.4% thought that their horse was sensitive to it, and the others did not know or doubted its efficacy. We, therefore, decided to test the impact of PDS on two tasks. During a grooming task that consisted of the experimenter scratching the horse with their hand, the horses (n = 20) carried out significantly more mutual grooming ges

Rethinking 3R strategies: Digging deeper into AnimalTestInfo promotes transparency in in vivo biomedical research.

In the European Union (EU), animal welfare is seen as a matter of great importance. However, with respect to animal experimentation, European citizens feel quite uninformed. The European Directive 2010/63/EU for the protection of laboratory animals aims for greater transparency and requires that a comprehensible, nontechnical summary (NTS) of each authorised research project involving animals is published by the respective Member State. However, the NTSs remain sleeping beauties if their contents are not easily and systematically accessible. The German web-based NTS database AnimalTestInfo is

Environmental factors affect the communities of avian Plasmodium in two species of Culex mosquitoes.

Understanding vector-borne pathogen transmission is a priority due to its impact on human and animal health. While mosquitoes are key hosts of avian malaria, most studies focus on birds. This study examines how environmental factors influence Plasmodium communities in Culex pipiens and Culex perexiguus and compares lineage composition and spatial patterns. Mosquitoes were collected from 16 sites in southwest Spain over two years. Plasmodium detection was performed using nested PCR, and lineages were identified by SANGER sequencing. Linear mixed models tested environmental effects on Plasmodium

Lives in a gram of soil: linking life cycle biology to soil ecology.

Soils are among the most diverse but least understood environments on the planet. Just below our feet, secluded from our sight, we find complex communities of bacteria, fungi, protists and animals. These communities organize themselves in both time and space, from fast to slow growers, from decomposers to predators, from early colonizers to late arrivers. Despite a growing understanding of community dynamics, the lives of organisms within the soil often remain poorly understood: how do organisms grow, propagate, and disperse within their particle-packed environments? In this essay, I reflect o

[Epidemics and risk factors of plague in Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, 2007-2016].

Objective: To explore the epidemic situation of animal plague in Junggar Basin natural plague foci. Methods: Data on epidemics of plague and on population involved, as well as results on antibodies and pathogens, were analyzed. Samples on animals and vectors were collected from 18 counties in Junggar Basin plague natural foci between 2007 and 2016. Results: The density of Rhombomys (R.) opimus was temporally fluctuant, from 2.1/hm(2) to 22.6/hm(2) respectively. However, the spatial distribution appeared asymmetrical, with the highest seen in Kelamayi and Wumuqi-midong counties, as 14.2/hm(2) a

Acetylcholine receptor antibody-mediated animal models of myasthenia gravis and the role of complement.

Because of the failure of many promising therapeutics identified in preclinical evaluation, funding sources have established guidelines for increased rigor in animal evaluations. The myasthenia gravis (MG) community of scientists has developed guidelines for preclinical assessment for potential MG treatments. Here, we provide a focused summary of these recommendations and the role of complement in disease development in experimental models of MG.

[Cutaneous zoonoses transmitted by dogs and cats].

Pets like dogs and cats are responsible for a series of zoonotic disorders. Some of these diseases are inflicted by bites, scratches or licking. Others result from a close contact with fur, or are transmitted by ectoparasites or by the contaminated environment. Some systemic infectious and parasitic diseases are transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. Such situation may lead to endemic problems in some communities.

Infrasonic hearing in birds: a review of audiometry and hypothesized structure-function relationships.

The perception of airborne infrasound (sounds below 20 Hz, inaudible to humans except at very high levels) has been documented in a handful of mammals and birds. While animals that produce vocalizations with infrasonic components (e.g. elephants) present conspicuous examples of potential use of infrasound in the context of communication, the extent to which airborne infrasound perception exists among terrestrial animals is unclear. Given that most infrasound in the environment arises from geophysical sources, many of which could be ecologically relevant, communication might not be the only use

The microbiome of the invertebrate model host Galleria mellonella is dominated by Enterococcus.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of Galleria mellonella as invertebrate model is increasing rapidly, because it forms an attractive alternative to study bacterial, fungal and viral infections, toxin biology, and to screen antimicrobial drugs. For a number of vertebrate and invertebrate animal and plant models, it has been established that the commensals present within the microbial communities on various host surfaces will influence the host's immune and growth development state and the colonization capacity of newly introduced micro-organisms. The microbial communities of Galleria mellonella larvae

The excreted microbiota of bats: evidence of niche specialisation based on multiple body habitats.

Animal-associated microbiotas form complex communities, which play crucial functions for their host, including susceptibility to infections. Despite increasing attention to bats as reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, their microbiota is poorly documented, especially for samples potentially implicated in pathogen transmission such as urine and saliva. Here, using low-biomass individual samples, we examined the composition and structure of bacterial communities excreted by insectivorous bats, focusing on three body habitats (saliva, urine and faeces). We show that niche specialisation occurs as ba

Potential limitations of community-wide strategy to treat Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

A quarter of the world's population has immunologic evidence of past or present Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb ) infection ( MTBI ) detected as TST or IGRA positivity. Community-based preventive treatment of individuals with MTBI has resulted in transient decreases in TB cases, but its long-term effectiveness has been controversial. Due to the likelihood that many of those with immune responses to Mtb antigens may no longer harbor Mtb, widespread treatment of all such individuals may result in unnecessary exposure to antibiotics. We raise an additional concern that preventive treatment of in

Assembly by disassembly of the gut microbiota in Riptortus pedestris and other stinkbugs.

The gut is one of the largest internal organs in animals and is central to nutrition. Its need to uptake food from the environment implies it is open at both ends, exposing its lumen to the outside world and to colonization by ingested microbial communities. As the primary site of host-associated microbiota, the gut has, over evolutionary time, fostered stable associations with specific microbes to which the host has delegated key biological functions. Insect gut microbiota is of interest both for its impact on this ecologically important animal group and as a simplified model for understandin

Evaluation of a Student-Led Community-Based Veterinary Clinic for Disabled Low-Income Clients: A Case Study of the University of Florida PAWS Program.

People with disabilities experiencing low socioeconomic position are priority populations when considering access to veterinary care. In this population, intersectional inequities lead to adverse health outcomes for both those individuals and the companion animals they care for. Community-based veterinary clinics provide an opportunity to target these inequities from a culturally sensitive lens, intending to improve human and animal outcomes. We conducted a process evaluation of a student-led community-based clinic for this population to better understand client satisfaction, assess learning o

Q Fever in Rural Australia: Education Versus Vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is an infection caused by Coxiella burnetii, a zoonotic disease acquired from both wild and domestic animals. Northern rural New South Wales (NSW) communities in Australia have an increased risk of exposure to this organism. Both the acute and chronic phases of the infection are associated with significant morbidity, which is often increased by delayed recognition and treatment. Recent termination of vaccination programs in Australia may increase the risk of infection in these populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the current knowledge ba

One Health contributions towards more effective and equitable approaches to health in low- and middle-income countries.

Emerging zoonoses with pandemic potential are a stated priority for the global health security agenda, but endemic zoonoses also have a major societal impact in low-resource settings. Although many endemic zoonoses can be treated, timely diagnosis and appropriate clinical management of human cases is often challenging. Preventive 'One Health' interventions, e.g. interventions in animal populations that generate human health benefits, may provide a useful approach to overcoming some of these challenges. Effective strategies, such as animal vaccination, already exist for the prevention, control

Advocating for Generalizability: Accepting Inherent Variability in Translation of Animal Research Outcomes.

Advancing scientific discovery requires investigators to embrace research practices that increase transparency and disclosure about materials, methods, and outcomes. Several research advocacy and funding organizations have produced guidelines and recommended practices to enhance reproducibility through detailed and rigorous research approaches; however, confusion around vocabulary terms and a lack of adoption of suggested practices have stymied successful implementation. Although reproducibility of research findings cannot be guaranteed due to extensive inherent variables in attempts at experi

Risk factors associated with zoonotic tuberculosis at the animal-human interface in a tuberculosis-endemic sub-Saharan country.

We aimed to assess the proportion of tuberculosis in humans and tuberculosis (TB)-associated abattoir condemnations from the animal sector, as well as determine risk factors of zoonotic tuberculosis at the animal-human interface in Zambia. The study involved 255 presumptive TB patients and 156 cattle carcasses and was conducted from April 2020 to December 2021. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were performed for risk factor analysis for zoonotic TB. The overall proportion of bovine tuberculosis in traditional cattle and the proportion of tuberculosis among presumptive TB pati

The presence of Toxoplasma gondii in soil, their transmission, and their influence on the small ruminants and human population: A review.

The ecosystem approach has been developed since the 1940s. An ecosystem is a community of living organism and their interaction and conjugation with abiotic factors of the environment. The ecosystem is not endemic to the aquatic environment only but, the terrestrial environment is also considered to be a part of an ecosystem. Soil act as mother role for the survival of different microorganism. The Toxoplasma gondii oocysts stay survive for a long time in the soil. This presence of these oocysts might critically enhance the success of this parasite in two ways. First, this parasite can widespre

Chlamydiaceae: Diseases in Primary Hosts and Zoonosis.

Bacteria of the Chlamydiaceae family are a type of Gram-negative microorganism typified by their obligate intracellular lifestyle. The majority of the members in the Chlamydiaceae family are known pathogenic organisms that primarily infect the host mucosal surfaces in both humans and animals. For instance, Chlamydia trachomatis is a well-known etiological agent for ocular and genital sexually transmitted diseases, while C. pneumoniae has been implicated in community-acquired pneumonia in humans. Other chlamydial species such as C. abortus, C. caviae, C. felis, C. muridarum, C. pecorum, and C.
