Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder involves differential cortical processing in a visual spatial attention paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Inattention is undoubtedly one of the main characteristics of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nevertheless, a growing corpus of evidence shows that not all attentional processes are affected in this condition. This study aimed to explore the distribution of attentional resources in children with ADHD via a spatially shifted double-oddball visual task. METHODS: We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) for all visual stimuli. Subjects were instructed to allocate attention in a specific area of visual space while ignoring all stimuli presented outside. Ten male chi

Serum Tau and α-Synuclein in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Cross-Sectional Associations With Methylphenidate Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To compare serum total tau and α-synuclein among controls, drug-naïve children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and children with ADHD receiving methylphenidate. METHODS: Original ELISA spreadsheets provided 26 controls, 29 evaluable drug-naïve participants and 32 methylphenidate-treated participants. Boundary-coded results (> 500 pg/mL for tau; < 938 pg/mL for α-synuclein) were assigned the recorded boundary for rank-based analyses. Groups were compared using Kruskal-Wallis tests and Dunn-Bonferroni contrasts; within-group associations used Spearman correlation

An adolescent boy with kleptomania and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder treated with methylphenidate and guanfacine: A case report.

We present the case of a patient, a boy of 16 years of age at initial presentation, with kleptomania, an impulse disorder characterized by an impulse to steal unneeded items, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The patient's parents reported that he would frequently impulsively steal items and money that he did not need. Cognitive and physical assessments revealed no abnormalities, and the patient had no history of substance abuse. The patient was diagnosed with kleptomania and ADHD. The patient was started on Osmotic Release Oral System Methylphenidate (OROS-MPH), a medicatio

Is there evidence for additive neurocognitive deficits in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and co-occurring conditions?

OBJECTIVE: Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently present with co-occurring anxiety and depressive symptoms, raising questions about whether such comorbidity is associated with additive neurocognitive impairment. Prior findings have been mixed and rarely account for symptom exaggeration or noncredible task engagement. This study examined whether adults with ADHD and elevated internalizing symptoms demonstrate additive neurocognitive deficits when symptom and performance validity are controlled. METHOD: Archival data were analyzed from 752 postsecondary students

The reading difficulties in Chinese for individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: the role of executive function deficits.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disability (RD) are prevalent childhood conditions that together affect millions of children worldwide. In China, the prevalence of ADHD is approximately 6.4%, whereas the prevalence of RD ranges from 3.45% to 8%. Approximately 18-45% of children with ADHD also display comorbid RD, which further compromises their academic success and social functioning. Executive-function (EF) deficits are a core feature of ADHD and are known to affect reading in RD, yet their specific impact on Chinese reading remains under-explored. OBJ

Do Working Memory Deficits Underlie Reading Problems in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Reading problems are common in children with ADHD and show strong covariation with these children's underdeveloped working memory abilities. In contrast, working memory training does not appear to improve reading performance for children with ADHD or neurotypical children. The current study bridges the gap between these conflicting findings, and combines dual-task methodology with Bayesian modeling to examine the role of working memory for explaining ADHD-related reading problems. Children ages 8-13 (M = 10.50, SD = 1.59) with and without ADHD (N = 78; 29 girls; 63% Caucasian/Non-Hispanic) com

The effects of an online mindfulness-based intervention for parents of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been identified as a complementary treatment for children with ADHD. While there is a growing interest in developing MBIs in online formats, its application in parents is largely based on healthy populations. A two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) was designed to investigate the effectiveness of an online MBI (arm 1) compared with an online psychoeducation (PSY) program (arm 2). Outcomes were measured before the intervention, after the intervention, and at 3-month follow-up. A total of 248 parents whose children with ADHD symptoms aged 6 to 12 y

Psychometric properties of the adult executive functioning inventory (ADEXI) in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI) is a brief novel self-report questionnaire designed to assess executive functioning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of its Italian version in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A clinical sample of 84 adults diagnosed with ADHD at a tertiary care center was recruited. Discriminant validity was examined with respect to 252 age- and sex-matched non-clinical controls and norms extracted from a large epidemiological survey. Good internal consistency was observed for both the total score (

Brain functional connectivity and inhibitory control in Tourette syndrome with and without comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome is often comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and is associated with inhibitory control deficits. However, the differences in whole-brain functional connectivity between Tourette syndrome with and without ADHD and their neural basis for inhibitory control remain unclear. This study examines functional connectivity differences between these groups and their association with inhibitory control. METHODS: We recruited 52 children with Tourette syndrome (30 with Tourette syndrome only and 22 with Tourette syndrome + attention-deficit/hyperactivity dis

Positive effects of tactile massage for adolescents with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - A small scale study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Epidemiological studies show the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescents is around 5 %. There is strong evidence for psychosocial interventions and medication for treatment of ADHD core symptoms, but these alone do not always reach a satisfactory outcome. The aim of this small-scale study was to evaluate the impact of tactile massage on ADHD core symptoms in adolescents in a clinical setting. Secondary outcome measures addressed pain perception, ability to fall asleep, and stress levels before, during, and after the intervention. MA

The influence of methylphenidate on auditory brainstem response patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), characterized by periods of inattention, overactivity, and impulsiveness, is the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder among children. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is a technique in which clickshaped sounds elicit potentials that are recorded from electrodes placed on a patient's skull. Extant research indicates that ABR is frequently affected in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD. Methylphenidate (MPH), a psychostimulant, is often prescribed to children with ADHD as a first-line pharmacological treatment. The aim of

A systematic review of pharmacotherapy for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents with bipolar disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The data suggests that in children and adolescents, bipolar disorder (BD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be strongly correlated. Even though drugs for ADHD and BD are largely accepted, there is relatively little research on the management of comorbidity in children and adolescents, particularly in terms of safety. We provide a synthesis of these findings because one hasn't been made yet. AREAS COVERED: As a primary outcome, we wanted to determine whether stimulant or non-stimulant treatment of children and adolescents with ADHD and comorbid BD was effect

Therapeutic drug monitoring of atomoxetine in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder: a naturalistic study.

The selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor atomoxetine is potentially among the first-line pharmacotherapy options for ADHD. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) with the quantification and interpretation of atomoxetine serum concentrations is used to determine an individual dose followed by an optimal effectiveness and minimal side effects. The aim of this retrospective pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis was to derive age-appropriate recommendations for the implementation of TDM to improve the efficacy and tolerability of atomoxetine in children and adolescents. Using the analytical m
