Small Area Forecasting of Opioid-Related Mortality: Bayesian Spatiotemporal Dynamic Modeling Approach.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-related overdose mortality has remained at crisis levels across the United States, increasing 5-fold and worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ability to provide forecasts of opioid-related mortality at granular geographical and temporal scales may help guide preemptive public health responses. Current forecasting models focus on prediction on a large geographical scale, such as states or counties, lacking the spatial granularity that local public health officials desire to guide policy decisions and resource allocation. OBJECTIVE: The overarching objective of our stud

Psychometric properties of the WHOQOL-BREF in a population of older adults in prison: measuring quality of life in a carceral setting.

PURPOSE: Valid and reliable measurement is critical to the assessment and evaluation of health interventions. However, few scholars have examined the psychometric properties of "gold standard" measures in carceral settings, and no research has explored the reliability, validity and factor structure of the 26-item World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) BREF among older adults incarcerated in prison, a large and growing population marked by substantial chronic and life-limiting illness. This study aims to examine the reliability, validity and factor structure of the WHOQOL-BREF. DES

Treating children's aggressive behavior problems using cognitive behavior therapy with virtual reality: A multicenter randomized controlled trial.

This multicenter randomized controlled trial investigated whether interactive virtual reality enhanced effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to reduce children's aggressive behavior problems. Boys with aggressive behavior problems (N = 115; Mage  = 10.58, SD = 1.48; 95.7% born in Netherlands) were randomized into three groups: CBT with virtual reality, CBT with roleplays, or care-as-usual. Bayesian analyses showed that CBT with virtual reality more likely reduced aggressive behavior compared to care-as-usual for six of seven outcomes (ds 0.19-0.95), and compared to CBT with rolep

Anxiolytic effects of endocannabinoid enhancing compounds: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The endocannabinoid system is a promising candidate for anxiolytic therapy, but translation to the clinic has been lagging. We meta-analyzed the evidence for anxiety-reduction by compounds that facilitate endocannabinoid signaling in humans and animals. To identify areas of specific potential, effects of moderators were assessed. Literature was searched in Pubmed and Embase up to May 2021. A placebo/vehicle-control group was required and in human studies, randomization. We excluded studies that co-administered other substances. Risk of bias was assessed with SYRCLE's RoB tool and Cochrane RoB

Oxygen saturation centiles in healthy preterm neonates in the first 10 min of life: a prospective observational study.

Current oxygen saturation targets in delivery room given by Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) are essentially derived from term neonates. This prospective observational study was conducted in a level-III neonatal unit in preterm neonates (< 37 weeks) who did not receive resuscitation or supplemental oxygen to create centile charts for pre-ductal oxygen saturations using robust statistical modelling methods. Pre-ductal oxygen saturations (SPO2) were recorded from birth till 10 min of age using current generation Masimo pulse oximeters. Centile charts were created by generalized additive mode

Intraventricular hemorrhage volume and younger age at surgery may be risk factors for postoperative hydrocephalus after hemispherotomy in children.

OBJECTIVE: Hemispherotomy is an effective treatment for intractable hemispheric epilepsy; however, hydrocephalus remains a common complication of the procedure. The causes of hydrocephalus following hemispherotomy have not been fully elucidated; therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with the condition. METHODS: The authors investigated the records of all patients aged < 18 years who underwent hemispherotomy at their institution between 2003 and 2020 and were monitored for hydrocephalus for at least 1 year after the procedure. To identify the risk fac

Race, Class, and Place Modify Mortality Rates for the Leading Causes of Death in the United States, 1999-2021.

BACKGROUND: Race and ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and geographic location are well-known social determinants of health in the US. Studies of population mortality often consider two, but not all three of these risk factors. OBJECTIVES: To disarticulate the associations of race (whiteness), class (socioeconomic status), and place (county) with risk of cause-specific death in the US. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective analysis of death certificate data. Bayesian regression models, adjusted for age and race/ethnicity from the American Community Survey and the county Area Deprivation Index,

Reconsidering resectable oncological conditions in pancreatic tail cancer: A multicenter retrospective study on prognostic factors in pancreatic tail cancer after resection (HOPS Pt-01).

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic tail cancer (Pt-PC) is generally considered resectable when metastasis is absent, but doubts persist in clinical practice due to the variability in local tumor extent. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study to comprehensively identify prognostic factors associated with Pt-PC after resection. METHODS: We enrolled 100 patients that underwent distal pancreatectomy. The optimal combination of factors influencing relapse-free survival (RFS) was determined using the maximum likelihood method (MLM) and corrected Akaike and Bayesian information criteria (AICc and BIC).

Interdependency in lateralization of written word and face processing in right-handed individuals.

It has been suggested that the right hemisphere lateralization typically observed for face processing may depend on lateralization of written word processing to the left hemisphere; a pattern referred to as the causal complementary principle of lateralization. According to a strong version of this principle, a correlation should be found between the degree of left and right hemisphere lateralization for word and face processing respectively. This has been observed in two studies, but only for left-handed individuals. The present study tested whether a similar lateralization pattern could be fo

Linking self-perceived cognitive functioning questionnaires using item response theory: The subjective cognitive decline initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Self-perceived cognitive functioning, considered highly relevant in the context of aging and dementia, is assessed in numerous ways-hindering the comparison of findings across studies and settings. Therefore, the present study aimed to link item-level self-report questionnaire data from international aging studies. METHOD: We harmonized secondary data from 24 studies and 40 different questionnaires with item response theory (IRT) techniques using a graded response model with a Bayesian estimator. We compared item information curves to identify items with high measurement precision

Effect of body image perception and skin-lightening practices on mental health of Filipino emerging adults: a mixed-methods approach protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The rampant distribution of idealised images on the internet may lead the general public to improve their body appearance in a way that is sometimes excessive, compulsive or detrimental to other aspects of their lives. There is a decreasing appreciation of body image among emerging adults and an increasing trend on skin-lightening practices linked with psychological distress. This protocol describes the mixed-method approach to assess the relationships among body image perception, skin-lightening practices and mental well-being of Filipino emerging adults and determine the factor

The distribution of hepatitis C viral genotypes shifted among chronic hepatitis C patients in Yunnan, China, between 2008-2018.

OBJECT: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is prevalent across China, with a distinctive genotypic distribution that varies by geographical region and mode of transmission. Yunnan is one such geographical region wherein the local population continues to experience a high level of HCV infection, severely straining public health resources. This high prevalence is likely due to the increased incidence of intravenous drug use in that region, as Yunnan is a major point of entry for illegal heroin into China. METHODS: We investigated 510 individuals with chronic HCV infections in Yunnan Province from 2008

Bayesian spatial modelling of tuberculosis-HIV co-infection in Ethiopia.

An in-depth analysis of the epidemiological patterns of TB/HIV co-infection is essential since it helps to target high-risk areas with effective control measures. The main objective of this study was to assess the spatial clustering of TB/HIV co-infection prevalence in Ethiopia for the year 2018 using district-level aggregated TB and HIV data obtained from the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health. The global Moran's index, Getis-Ord [Formula: see text] local statistic, and Bayesian spatial modeling techniques were applied to analyse the data. The result of the study shows that TB among people

Influence of social and meteorological factors on hand, foot, and mouth disease in Sichuan Province.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by a variety of enteroviruses remains a major public health problem in China. Previous studies have found that social factors may contribute to the inconsistency of the relationship patterns between meteorological factors and HFMD, but the conclusions are inconsistent. The influence of social factors on the association between meteorology and HFMD is still less well understood. We aimed to analyze whether social factors affected the effect of meteorological factors on HFMD in Sichuan Province. METHOD: We collected daily data on HFMD, mete

Molecular evolution of the human monkeypox virus.

Recently, in 2022, new cases of human monkeypox virus (hMPXV) occurred in Europe and North America. The first case was reported in Europe in May 2022, and subsequently, more than 50 000 new cases were confirmed in 100 countries. Currently, the classification of hMPXV according to the nextstrain occurs in five big clades (1A, A.1, A.2, A.1.1, and B.1). According to the resurgence of smallpox-like disease caused by hMPXV and the spread of the virus to the European and American continents, in the present study, we review and summarize the molecular evolution of the hMPXV, determining the molecula

Effects of culling vampire bats on the spatial spread and spillover of rabies virus.

Controlling pathogen circulation in wildlife reservoirs is notoriously challenging. In Latin America, vampire bats have been culled for decades in hopes of mitigating lethal rabies infections in humans and livestock. Whether culls reduce or exacerbate rabies transmission remains controversial. Using Bayesian state-space models, we show that a 2-year, spatially extensive bat cull in an area of exceptional rabies incidence in Peru failed to reduce spillover to livestock, despite reducing bat population density. Viral whole genome sequencing and phylogeographic analyses further demonstrated that

Incidence and Spatial distribution of Human and Livestock Anthrax in Cao Bang Province, Vietnam (2004-2020).

Specific knowledge on the distribution of anthrax, a zoonosis caused by Bacillus anthracis, in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, remains limited. In this study, we describe disease incidence and spatial distribution of human and livestock anthrax using spatially smoothed cumulative incidence from 2004 to 2020 in Cao Bang province, Vietnam. We employed the zonal statistics routine a geographic information system (GIS) using QGIS, and spatial rate smoothing using spatial Bayes smoothing in GeoDa. Results showed higher incidence of livestock anthrax compared with human anthrax. We also identifie
