OBJECTIVE: The bioengineering of tissues and organs, sometimes called tissue engineering and at other times regenerative medicine, is emerging as a science, as a technology, and as an industry. The goal is the repair, replacement, and/or the regeneration of tissues and organs. The objective of this paper is to identify and discuss the major issues that have become apparent.
RESULTS: One of the critical issues is that of cell source, i.e. what will be the source of the cells to be employed? Another critical issue is the development of approaches for the fabrication of substitute tissues/organs

This review considers the problem of the encrustation of biomaterials used for urinary prostheses. After a general discussion of the problem it deals with exciting new developments which may prove to be clinically applicable in preventing this costly and resource consuming complication. The widespread use of use of in vitro models which accurately simulate the conditions found in the human urinary tract will allow appropriate preliminary studies. Perhaps then clinical evaluation will be warranted.

Peritoneal dialysis is a method of renal replacement therapy which has been increasingly in use worldwide and, in recent years, also in our country. A factor limiting long-term use of peritoneal dialysis is the maintenance of the function of the peritoneum as a dialysis membrane. Impairment of the anatomical and functional integrity of the peritoneal membrane may be due to severe or recurrent peritonitis but, also, in patients without a history of peritoneal infection, presumably as a result of contact between the peritoneum and a bioincompatible dialysis solution. When investigating the struc

A novel drainage implant for glaucoma filtering surgery (MESH) is proposed. After various expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (e-PFTE) materials were evaluated, the feasibility and the short-term safety of the technique were assessed in this first pilot study in the rabbit. The porous structure and the in vitro resistance to aqueous flow of seven different e-PTFE membranes (5-80 microm average pore size) were compared. Eight Dutch pigmented rabbits were implanted with the T-shaped MESH implants made from either 20- or 50-microm average pore size e-PTFE membranes. Clinical examination, intraocul

Many of the biomaterials and auxilliary products used in dentistry are chemically and biologically reactive and may be of concern in occupational safety programmes. Observations from 1936 to 1975 indicated that most occupational problems were related to skin contact with procaine, soaps, eugenol, iodine, formalin, phenol, and other disinfectants. Methyl methacrylate monomer was identified as an irritant and allergen in the later part of this period. Investigations from 1975 to 1985 indicated that disinfectants and detergents were still important causes of dermatoses, whereas reactions to proca

The articular cartilage is characterized by its gradient hierarchical structure, which exhibits excellent lubrication and robust load-bearing properties. However, its inherent difficulty in self-repair after damage presents numerous formidable challenges for cartilage repair. Inspired by the unique structure of articular cartilage, a biomimetic bilayer hydrogel composed of PAM (polyacrylamide) and PAM/SA (sodium alginate) is prepared using a two-stepin-situswelling method. The bilayer hydrogel demonstrates exceptional structural stability due to the interlayerin-situchemical cross-linking. Com

This study aimed to create a thick hydroxyapatite (HA) film on the surface of a human tooth via a powder jet deposition (PJD) device for dental handpieces, and to examine the microstructural and mechanical properties of the HA film. In particular, the effects of thermal stress on this film were evaluated. The HA film was created by blasting 3.18-μm HA particles, calcinated at 1,200°C, onto the enamel substrate at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. An HA film with an area of 3 mm × 3 mm was prepared and polished. The following HA film parameters were evaluated from the three-dimensional

The direct synthesis of high-valence metal-organic frameworks (HV-MOFs) under biocompatible conditions remains an outstanding challenge due to the strong Lewis acidity and sluggish coordination kinetics of their metal centers. Here, we report a mild, aqueous synthesis of UiO-66-a benchmark Zr4 +-based framework-using the conventional benzene dicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) linker. The approach enables the formation of highly crystalline protein@UiO-66 composites while preserving biomolecule integrity and activity. In situ SAXS and cryoEM reveal that protein incorporation modulates prenucleation and

Background and purpose - BoneMaster (BM) is an electrochemically deposited hydroxyapatite (HA) implant-coating, which is evenly distributed, thin, and quickly resorbed. It is designed to stimulate osseointegration and early implant stability and alleviate longer-term HA-induced third-body polyethylene wear. This study evaluates early cup migration and functional outcomes of cementless porous-coated hemispherical cups with or without BM.Patients and methods - In a patient-blinded, randomized, controlled trial 53 patients at mean 64 years (55-75) with coxarthritis were operated with an Exceed cu

INTRODUCTION: In the modern era, the use of biomaterials in orthopaedics has revolutionised the healthcare sector. Traditionally, some non-biodegradable materials such as titanium and stainless steel are used as biomaterials. However, issues such as toxicity, poor tissue adhesion, and stress-shielding effect can occur with non-biodegradable materials for bone fracture fixation. Several biodegradable materials have been developed to resolve these issues but have not yet been appropriately industrialized for implant applications. These substances can be classified into metals, ceramics, and poly

This review discusses the functional polymer materials effect on the cell adhesion. The applied polymer materials for the cell adhesion purpose was prepared based on organic fibers and biocompatible hydrogel. On the other hand, the active peptides are incorporated into the polymer materials substrate via the cysteine-containing peptides and N-hydroxysuccinimide-active group. Cancer cells and normal cells were presented for the selective adhesion via the introduced polymer materials substrate containing active peptides including Arginine-Glycine-Aspartic and Isoleucine-Lysine-Valine-Alanine-Val

To ensure the safety of PVDF in biomedical applications, biocompatibility tests must be performed after each manufacturing process, as these can alter the material's properties, even if it is inherently biocompatible. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the in vivo biocompatibility of pure PVDF and PVDF enriched with hydroxyapatite (HAp) in the subcutaneous tissue of Wistar rats and to characterize the crystalline structures of the materials. Subcutaneous implants of PVDF and PVDF-HAp were performed in Wistar rats. Tissue response was evaluated histologically using scoring at 7, 15, and 30 days

Dental diseases pose a global health concern. In addition to medication and care, the use of biocompatible and even bioactive dental materials can contribute to global oral health. Among such materials, nanomaterials begin to be used. In this context, the incorporation of graphene-based materials into dental biomaterials could offer advantages such as increased mechanical strength. Nevertheless, biocompatibility issues still hinder their adoption. In this study, a biocomposite of few-layered graphene and tannic acid (FLG-TA) was synthesized through a straightforward, bio-based methodology. Phy

In this work, the biocompatibility and antibacterial activities of novel SnO2 nanowire coatings prepared by electron-beam (E-Beam) evaporation process at low temperatures were studied. The nanowire coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The results of in vitro cytotoxicity and cell proliferation assays suggested that the SnO2 nanowire coatings were nontoxic and promoted the proliferation of C2C12 and L929 cells (> 90% viability). Cellular activities, cell adhesion, and lactate dehydrogenase

Skin aging results from the synergistic assault of extrinsic environmental factors and intrinsic biological processes. While traditional microsphere implants promote skin rejuvenation through collagen regeneration, their clinical utility is hampered by non-biodegradability and risks such as granuloma formation. To overcome these limitations, this study employed microfluidic technology to develop highly uniform, novel injectable, highly bioactive, and degradable Astragalus polysaccharide/silk fibroin (APS/SF) composite microspheres for subcutaneous filling to promote collagen regeneration. Medical nylon catheters (PA12) are essential instruments in interventional procedures, yet their inherent surface hydrophobicity and limited lubricity significantly restrict clinical performance. Although various hydrophilic coatings have been developed to address these issues, traditional physical coating methods often suffer from poor adhesion and delamination during use. To overcome these drawbacks, we developed a two-step chemical modification strategy involving epichlorohydrin (ECH) activation followed by covalent grafting of polyethyleneimine (PEI), aiming to construct a stable hydrophil
