Effects of training on naïve listeners' judgments of the speech intelligibility of children with severe-to-profound hearing loss.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of feedback training, familiarization training, and no training on naïve listeners' word identification (WI) and magnitude estimation scaling (MES) judgments of the speech intelligibility of children with severe-to-profound hearing impairments. METHOD: Depending on the training group, listeners received a pretest, an immediate posttest, and/or a delayed posttest. RESULTS: Results indicated that repeated exposure, with or without training, led to improved WI scores. Beyond the effects of repeated exposure, listeners' WI judgments of the intelligibility

Say it with me: stuttering inhibited.

This study examined fluency enhancement in people who stutter via the concomitant presentation of silently mouthed visual speech. Ten adults who stutter recited memorized text while watching another speaker silently mouth linguistically equivalent and linguistically different material. Relative to a control condition, in which no concomitant stimulus was provided, stuttering was reduced by 71% in the linguistically equivalent condition versus only 35% in the linguistically different condition. Despite being an 'incomplete' second speech signal, visual speech possesses the capacity to immediate

Fecal incontinence in the elderly patient.

Fecal incontinence is an underreported problem in the general population; it is especially common in elderly persons (aged >or=65 years) residing in the community or in long-term care settings. It affects more women than men during younger years, but this differential narrows with age. Physiological changes such as sphincter muscle and sensory abnormalities in the anorectal region contribute to this problem, as do factors such as dementia, physical disability, and fecal impaction. Treatment with biofeedback is feasible in many elderly patients. Those with advanced dementia or physical disabili

Short term and long term effects of enhanced auditory feedback on typing force, EMG, and comfort while typing.

Two studies were conducted to determine the effects of enhanced auditory feedback on typing force, electromyography (EMG) and subjective discomfort. The introduction of enhanced auditory feedback caused a 10-20% reduction in 90th percentile typing force, finger flexor EMG, and finger extensor EMG. Adaptation to the enhanced auditory feedback occurred in <3 min. After 1 week of intermittent enhanced auditory feedback there were no differences in typing force or EMG while subjects were typing with or without the enhanced auditory feedback. The continued use of auditory feedback did not further r

Sensory feedback in artificial control of human mobility.

Artificial motor control systems may reduce the handicap of motor impaired individuals. Sensors are essential components in feedback control of these systems and in the information exchange with the user. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of the applications of sensors in the artificial control of human mobility. These applications may either require an accurate estimate of the measured physical quantities or can be based on learning the relation between sensory information and control actions by example. Actual use of sensors in artificial motor control systems requires that

Randomised controlled trial of biofeedback training in persistent encopresis with anismus.

BACKGROUND: Paradoxical external anal sphincter contraction during attempted defecation (anismus) is thought to be an important contributor to chronic faecal retention and encopresis in children. Biofeedback training can be used to teach children to abolish this abnormal contraction. METHODS: A randomised controlled trial in medical treatment resistant and/or treatment dependent children with anismus using surface electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback training to determine whether such training produces sustained faecal continence. Up to four sessions of biofeedback training were conducted at w

Biofeedback for the treatment of stress and urge incontinence.

Biofeedback and pelvic floor electrical stimulation are new modalities that have been advocated for the treatment of urinary incontinence. To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of biofeedback and identify factors predictive of a positive outcome, we prospectively studied 28 patients with stress and urge incontinence. All patients were evaluated with a complete history, physical examination, urinalysis and culture. Of 28 patients 21 were also studied with video urodynamics. Biofeedback was performed with the InCare PRS 8900* machine with each patient undergoing at least 6 office sessions. Qua

Multiple clinical and paraclinical analyses of chronic tension-type headache associated or unassociated with disorder of pericranial muscles.

Thirty-two female patients fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of chronic tension-type headache underwent multiple clinical (severity index before and after biofeedback therapy; anxiety score) and paraclinical (pericranial EMG levels and pressure-pain thresholds, temporalis exteroceptive silent period) assessments. Twenty-three patients (72%) had at least one increased EMG level and/or at least one decreased pain threshold and qualified for the subgroup" associated with disorder of pericranial muscles" (code 2.2.1). Nine patients (28%) were within the normal range for both investigations and wo

Biofeedback treatment of genu-recurvatum using an electrogoniometric device with an acoustic signal. One-year follow-up.

The aim was to evaluate the effect of a biofeedback electrogoniometer in the control of recurvation of the knee while walking in patients with neurological diseases. Eighteen patients were trained daily for 12.8 sessions on average with an electrogoniometer attached to the knee, which gave a signal at a threshold value of 180 degrees in order to avoid hypertension of the knee. The improvement was statistically significant even after one year.

Treating chronic hemiparesis with modified biofeedback.

Eleven patients with chronic spastic hemiparesis were treated with biosignal processing (BSP), a modified biofeedback method in which the patient practices useful tasks, not isolated individual movements. A surface EMG measures sequential movements, and an acoustic signal monitors muscle exertion. The patient first learns how the signal develops by using the unaffected limb. Then the patient tries to reproduce the course of the signal in the paretic limb. Patients received 12 to 30 treatments for upper and/or lower extremities. We measured maximum strength as expressed through the EMG signal;

[Biofeedback training and functional electrostimulation for improving incontinence in children with anal atresia].

Eleven children with anal incontinence following a pull-through operation for anorectal agenesis (4 low, 7 high anomalies) were treated with a conservative continence training program (optic/acoustic biofeedback, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, physical therapy, contraction exercises and sensibility training). All patients with one exception showed subjective and objective improvement of continence. Sphincter contraction increased by 80% in high and by 40% in low anomalies. For a short time electrostimulation provided an improvement of up to 20% in sphincter pressure. One additional suc

Biofeedback techniques in the treatment of visual and ophthalmologic disorders: a review of the literature.

The literature on the use of biofeedback techniques in the treatment of visual and ophthalmologic disorders is reviewed. Although this consists mainly of case studies, there is mounting evidence that biofeedback may be applicable to the treatment of strabismus, nystagmus, blepharospasm, elevated intraocular pressure, and myopia. because of the success in applying biofeedback techniques in the treatment of other neuromuscular disorders, it is concluded that the use of these techniques in the treatment of blepharospasm and strabismus shows the most promise.

EMG biofeedback in the treatment of hyperfunctional voice disorders.

In this study, six patients who were judged to produce speech with excessive laryngeal tension participated in 14 30-min biofeedback training sessions. The EMG signal, measured by bipolar surface electrodes placed over the cricothyroid region, was amplified, integrated, and used to control the output of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and a noise generator. A voltage comparator was used as a threshold device. Thus, the noise generator was activated when the EMG activity exceeded the value selected on the comparator, and the VCO was activated when the EMG signal was below threshold. The r

Breathwork for Chronic Stress and Mental Health: Does Choosing a Specific Technique Matter?

Modern society faces a growing prevalence of mental disorders, with stress emerging as a critical factor affecting mental well-being. In recent years, breathwork has gained public and scientific recognition as a promising approach for enhancing psychological health. Despite the rapid growth in research, the field remains fragmented due to the diversity of breathing techniques. Moreover, recent findings have challenged several foundational concepts traditionally believed to underlie the therapeutic effects of breathwork. This review offers a comprehensive overview and comparison of the most wid

Understanding bruxism in children and adolescents.

Screening for the various forms of bruxism in children and adolescents requires a sound knowledge of the physiopathology of this parafunction in addition to the etiologic and associated factors and comorbidities. The international literature contains various suggestions for suitable treatment. The optimal therapeutic approach often involves multidisciplinary management of these young patients. Sleep bruxism (SB) is a common sleep disorder which can cause serious problems to the stomatognathic system such as damaged teeth, headaches, muscle pain and TMD. Dental professionals are responsible for

Interventions for treating persistent pain in survivors of torture.

BACKGROUND: Persistent (chronic) pain is a frequent complaint in survivors of torture, particularly but not exclusively pain in the musculoskeletal system. Torture survivors may have no access to health care; where they do, they may not be recognised when they present, and the care available often falls short of their needs. There is a tendency in state and non-governmental organisations' services to focus on mental health, with poor understanding of persistent pain, while survivors may have many other legal, welfare, and social problems that take precedence over health care. OBJECTIVES: To a
