Bacillus safensis LS01 provides biological control of potato common scab with potential effects from secondary metabolites.

AIMS: Potato common scab (CS), caused by pathogenic Streptomyces, is a devastating disease affecting potato crops worldwide. Antagonistic microorganisms have been used as biological control agents to inhibit Streptomyces scabies and reduce the use of synthetic pesticides. However, identifying beneficial microorganisms for controlling CS remains undetermined. METHODS AND RESULTS: Strain LS01 was isolated from the geocaulosphere soils of healthy potato tubers. In vitro and pot experiments demonstrated that strain LS01 significantly inhibited the mycelial growth and sporulation of S. scabies, th…

Mosquito-Borne Diseases and Their Control Strategies: An Overview Focused on Green Synthesized Plant-Based Metallic Nanoparticles.

Mosquitoes act as vectors of pathogens that cause most life-threatening diseases, such as malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Yellow fever, Zika, West Nile, Lymphatic filariasis, etc. To reduce the transmission of these mosquito-borne diseases in humans, several chemical, biological, mechanical, and pharmaceutical methods of control are used. However, these different strategies are facing important and timely challenges that include the rapid spread of highly invasive mosquitoes worldwide, the development of resistance in several mosquito species, and the recent outbreaks of novel arthropod-borne vi

A narrative review of the comparative safety of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have improved the outcomes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). DMARDs are classified into three categories: conventional synthetic DMARDs, biological DMARDs (including biosimilars), and targeted synthetic DMARDs. DMARDs, by way of their effect on the immune system, are associated with increased risk of adverse events, including infections, malignancies, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal perforations, and other less common events. AREAS COVERED: In this narrative literature review performed with searches of the PubMed

Inhibition of Three Potato Pathogens by Phenazine-Producing Pseudomonas spp. Is Associated with Multiple Biocontrol-Related Traits.

Phenazine-producing Pseudomonas spp. are effective biocontrol agents that aggressively colonize the rhizosphere and suppress numerous plant diseases. In this study, we compared the ability of 63 plant-beneficial phenazine-producing Pseudomonas strains representative of the worldwide diversity to inhibit the growth of three major potato pathogens: the oomycete Phytophthora infestans, the Gram-positive bacterium Streptomyces scabies, and the ascomycete Verticillium dahliae. The 63 Pseudomonas strains are distributed among four different subgroups within the P. fluorescens species complex and pro

Identification and Predictions Regarding the Biosynthesis Pathway of Polyene Macrolides Produced by Streptomyces roseoflavus Men-myco-93-63.

A group of polyene macrolides mainly composed of two constituents was isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces roseoflavus Men-myco-93-63, which was isolated from soil where potato scabs were repressed naturally. One of these macrolides was roflamycoin, which was first reported in 1968, and the other was a novel compound named Men-myco-A, which had one methylene unit more than roflamycoin. Together, they were designated RM. This group of antibiotics exhibited broad-spectrum antifungal activities in vitro against 17 plant-pathogenic fungi, with 50% effective concentrations (EC50) of

Effect of Pesticides on Biological Control Potential of Neoscona theisi (Araneae: Araneidae).

The present study was designed to record the effect of λ-cyhalothrin, Bifenthrin, and Glyphosate on the mortality, avoidance behavior, foraging activity, and activity of Acetylcholine esterase (AChE) and Carboxylesterase (CarE) in Neoscona theisi (Walckenaer, 1841). Highest mortality (70%) in N. theisi was recorded against λ-cyhalothrin. However, Glyphosate was found to be least toxic. Spider spent less time on insecticides/herbicide-treated surfaces. Insecticides/herbicide-treated N. theisi consumed less prey than untreated control spiders. Similarly, when N. theisi were offered insecticide/h

The diverse nematicidal properties and biocontrol efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry6A against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne hapla.

Cry6A toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis is a representative nematicidal crystal protein with a variety of nematicidal properties to free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Cry6A shares very low homology and different structure with Cry5B, another representative nematicidal crystal protein, and probably acts in a distinct pathway. All these strongly indicate that Cry6A toxin is likely a potent candidate for nematicide. The present study dealt with global investigation to determine the detrimental impacts of Cry6Aa2 toxin on Meloidogyne hapla, a root-knot nematode, and evaluated its biocont

Evaluation of yeasts obtained from Antarctic soil samples as biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases of apple (Malus × domestica).

Psychrotrophic yeasts were isolated from Antarctic soils, selected based on their ability to grow in apple juice at low temperatures, and were evaluated as potential biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases of apple during cold storage. Among the species recovered, an isolate of Leucosporidium scottii, designated At17, was identified as a good biocontrol agent for blue and gray mold of two apple cultivars. The selected isolate produced soluble and volatile antifungal substances that were inhibitory to apple pathogens. Siderophore production was also demonstrated, but it did

Lessons to be Learned from Recent Biosafety Incidents in the United States.

During recent months, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the occurrence of three major biosafety incidents, raising serious concern about biosafety and biosecurity guideline implementation in the most prestigious agencies in the United States: the CDC, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). These lapses included: a) the mishandling of Bacillus anthracis spores potentially exposing dozens of employees to anthrax; b) the shipment of low pathogenic influenza virus unknowingly cross-contaminated with a highly pathogenic strain

Prolonged mania in a case of bipolar affective disorder.

Bipolar disorder, which often has its onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is characterised by marked variations in mood, ranging from major depressive episodes to manic exacerbations. Compared to depressive episodes, manic recurrences are often brief and usually respond to anti-manic medications within a few weeks. Infrequently bipolar patients get badly affected by protracted manic symptoms that exhibit resistance to the usual anti-manic agents. As mania is a very disruptive condition with severe and adverse consequences for the patient, every effort should be made to bring it under cont

[Long-term control of psoriasis is necessary].

Psoriasis is an immune mediated, inflammatory skin condition affecting approximately 1.43% of Spanish population. In clinical practice, physicians use PASI index to assess the severity. Psoriasis causes physical and mental disability comparable to other chronic diseases and affects seriously the patients quality of life. For treatment we have different options. Conventional systemic treatment such as methotrexate, cyclosporine and acitretin may be associated with relevant side effects, and organ toxicity that avoid long term therapy. Several psoriasis patients have other comorbid disorders lik

Dual role of HCN produced by the endophyte Pseudomonas urmiensis A32 in biocontrol and the defence response of pepper.

Plant-associated Pseudomonas species are widely recognised for their ecological versatility and potential as sustainable biocontrol and plant growth-promoting agents. Among their diverse metabolites, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is traditionally considered a potent antimicrobial compound, yet its broader role in plant-microbe interactions remains underexplored. This study investigated Pseudomonas urmiensis A32, an endophytic bacterium previously shown to enhance drought tolerance and disease resistance in pepper (Capsicum annuum). Whole-genome analysis revealed genes involved in nutrient acquisition

Effectiveness of biologics for reducing occlusive mucus plugs in patients with severe asthma: a systematic review.

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation and reversible airflow obstruction. Particularly in severe asthma, airway mucus plugs can contribute to substantial and persistent airflow obstruction, despite inhaled corticosteroid and bronchodilator treatment. Consequently, it is important that clinicians assess and treat mucus plugs. Increased mucus production and airway eosinophilia caused by type 2 (T2) inflammation contributes to mucus plug formation and persistence. Several biologics are available to target T2 inflammation in asthma and studies have describe

Reaching the therapeutic ceiling in IBD: Can Advanced Combination Treatment (ACT) offer a solution?

The term Advanced Combination Treatment (ACT) involves the combination of at least two biologics or the use of a biologic with a small molecule drug, each with different mechanisms of action. This narrative review evaluates the current evidence supporting ACT in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), focusing on preclinical studies, real-world evidence, and randomized controlled trials. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials has concluded that ACT significantly improves clinical outcomes, without significant safety concerns in patient with IBD. However, variability in trial designs and
