Reducing nutrient increases diatom biomass in a subtropical eutrophic lake, China-Do the ammonium concentration and nitrate to ammonium ratio play a role?

Response of aquatic organisms to eutrophication have been well reported, while less studies are available for the recovery of eutrophic lake … s in P1-SA and P2-WS were all significantly higher than those in P2-SA and P1-WS, respectively. The biomass of WS diatom increased significantly and the timing of the peak biomass shifted from P1-SA to P2-WS since 2007. The SEM analysis showed that NO3-N was retained as a statistically significant predictor for diatom biomass in P1-SA and significant effe …

Exhausted Woods from Tannin Extraction as an Unexplored Waste Biomass: Evaluation of the Antioxidant and Pollutant Adsorption Properties and Activating Effects of Hydrolytic Treatments.

Exhausted woods represent a byproduct of tannin industrial production processes and their possible exploitation as a source of antioxidant compounds has remained virtually unexplored. We herein report the characterization of the antioxidant and other properties of practical interest of exhausted chestnut wood and quebracho wood, together with those of a chestnut wood fiber, produced from steamed exhausted chestnut wood. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays indicated good antioxidant properties for all the materials investigated, with exhauste

Spatio-temporal variations in biomass and mercury concentrations of epiphytic biofilms and their host in a large river wetland (Lake St. Pierre, Qc, Canada).

Within wetlands, epiphytes and macrophytes play an important role in storage and transfer of metals, through the food web. However, there is a lack of information about spatial and temporal changes in their metal levels, including those of mercury (Hg), a key priority contaminant of aquatic systems. We assessed total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations of epiphyte/macrophyte complexes in Lake St. Pierre, a large fluvial lake of the St. Lawrence River (Québec, Canada). THg and MeHg concentrations were ten fold higher in epiphytes than in macrophytes. THg concentrations in epip

Fermentation of non-sterilized fish biomass with a mixed culture of film-forming yeasts and lactobacilli and its effect on innate and adaptive immunity in mice.

Non-sterilized fish waste containing fish bones was fermented using combined starter cultures of film-forming yeast (Candida ethanolica) and lactic acid bacteria (LAB; Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus rhamnosus) in order to obtain a liquefied fermented broth without spoiling. During the entire fermentation, the number of LAB cells was maintained at a high level (6 × 10(8)-5 × 10(7) cells/ml). Although the number of general bacteria was 10(6)cell/ml after adding non-sterilized fish biomass, its growth was suppressed to be 1-3 × 10(4) cells/ml. The entire biomass had completely liquefied an…

Triticum aestivum shows a greater biomass response to a supply of aluminium phosphate than Lupinus albus, despite releasing fewer carboxylates into the rhizosphere.

The relationship between carboxylate release and the ability of plants to access phosphorus from AlPO4 and to detoxify aluminium was studied by comparing species with a low and high rate of carboxylate release, Triticum aestivum (wheat) and Lupinus albus (white lupin), respectively. Species were supplied with P at 10, 20, 40 or 100 mg P kg-1 sand in the form of sparingly soluble AlPO4 or soluble KH2PO4; control plants did not receive any P. Triticum aestivum was significantly better than L. albus at accessing P from AlPO4, despite accumulating fewer carboxylates in its rhizosphere. Rhizosphere

Dynamic Evolution and Covariant Response Mechanism of Volatile Organic Compounds and Residual Functional Groups during the Online Pyrolysis of Coal and Biomass Fuels.

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from pyrolysis of widely used biomass are expected to increase significantly under the carbon neutrality target. However, the dynamic emissions and evolution mechanism of biomass-VOCs remain unclear, hindered by complex reactions and offline measurements. Here, we propose a novel covariant evolution mechanism to interpret the emission heterogeneities, sequential temperature responses, and evolved correlations of both VOCs and residual functional groups (RFGs) during corn straw (CS), wood pellet (WP), and semibituminous coal (SBC) pyrolysis. An innovati…

Photosynthesis induction varies along the canopies of Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor: linking fast responses and non-photochemical quenching relaxation to biomass production.

Light variability throughout the canopy requires sophisticated control for the induction of photosynthesis and deactivation of photoprotective mechanisms, which could optimize CO2 assimilation and crop yield. This study aimed to investigate the genotypic variation in photosynthesis induction and the relaxation of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) across the canopy of five Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor cultivars. CO2 uptake, stomatal conductance, and NPQ dynamics were recorded every 60 s during photosynthetic induction. Initially, leaves at the top, middle and bottom canopy positions were dark-a

An Autoclavable, Antifreezing, Fluorescent Biomass Derived DNA Dot Organogel for Simultaneous Self-Sterilization, ROS Regulation and Growth Factor Delivery in Wound Healing Application.

Biomass-derived gels offer benefits such as drug delivery and a moist environment, but they typically lack mechanical strength, therapeutic properties, monitoring capabilities, and autoclave resistance. Enhancing these attributes requires precise, cost-effective chemical modification of the biomass material. Herein, a chemical-free approach to transform biomass DNA from onion into DNA nanodots (DNA Dots) that serve as cross-linking cores, chemically bonded with polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) through Michael addition, is presented. Using glycerol as the organic liquid phase, the DNA Dot…

At-Line Sampling and Characterization of Pyrolytic Vapors from Biomass Feedstock Blends Using SPME-GC/MS-PCA: Influence of Char on Fast Pyrolysis.

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was used for the at-line sampling of pyrolytic vapors produced during the fast pyrolysis of biomass. The pure and binary blends of switchgrass (SWG) and pine harvest residues (PT6) were used as biomass feedstocks. Sequential SPME sampling allowed for monitoring of changes in the pyrolysis vapors as char accumulated in the fluid bed. The relative concentration and composition of the pyrolysis vapors desorbed from the SPME fibers were investigated using GC-MS, and the resulting chromatograms wer…

Reductions in NO2 burden over north equatorial Africa from decline in biomass burning in spite of growing fossil fuel use, 2005 to 2017.

Socioeconomic development in low- and middle-income countries has been accompanied by increased emissions of air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides [NOx: nitrogen dioxide (NO2) + nitric oxide (NO)], which affect human health. In sub-Saharan Africa, fossil fuel combustion has nearly doubled since 2000. At the same time, landscape biomass burning-another important NOx source-has declined in north equatorial Africa, attributed to changes in climate and anthropogenic fire management. Here, we use satellite observations of tropospheric NO2 vertical column densities (VCDs) and burned area to identi…
