Ruminative response in clinical patients with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in the transdiagnostic trait of rumination. However, few studies have directly examined the ruminative response in the diagnosis of disorders other than major depression, such as anxiety disorders and bipolar disorders. Even fewer studies have done so in a large, clinical sample. METHOD: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BPD), panic disorder with/without agoraphobia (PD), and generalized anxiety disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder (GAD/OCD) were compared using the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), Hamilton Rating Scal…

Neural correlates of response inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Impulsivity, inattention and poor behavioral inhibition are common deficits in pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to identify similarities and differences in the neural substrate of response inhibition deficits that are associated with these disorders. A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was conducted on 15 unmedicated PBD patients (Type I, manic/mixed), 11 unmedicated ADHD patients, and 15 healthy controls (HC) (mean age = 13.5 years; S.D. = 3.5). A response inhibition task examined the ability to inhibit a m…

Further distinctions between manic-depressive illness (bipolar disorder) and primary depressive disorder (unipolar depression).

OBJECTIVE: Patients with bipolar disorder differ from patients with unipolar depression by having family histories of mania with an earlier onset and by having more episodes over a lifetime. This study was designed to determine whether additional aspects of course of illness, the presence of medical diseases, childhood traits, and other familial illnesses separate the two groups. METHOD: In a large collaborative study, consecutively admitted bipolar and unipolar patients were systematically given clinical interviews. Data were collected on medical diseases and childhood behavioral traits. Sys…

Comparison of Hypomanic Symptoms Between Bipolar I and Bipolar II Disorders: A Network Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Hypomanic symptoms between bipolar-I disorder (BD-I) and bipolar-II disorder (BD-II) are often indistinguishable in clinical practice. This study compared the network structure of hypomanic symptoms between patients with BD-I and BD-II. METHODS: The 32-item Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) was used to assess hypomanic symptoms. Network model was generated in BD-I and BD-II patients. Centrality index of strength was used to quantify the importance of each symptom in the network. The Network Comparison Test (NCT) was used to assess the differences in hypomanic symptoms between BD-I and

Impairment in Emotional Intelligence May Be Mood-Dependent in Bipolar I and Bipolar II Disorders.

Background: An emotional intelligence (EI) deficit has been noticed in euthymic bipolar spectrum disorder (BD) patients. However, whether this deficit is affected by mood or subtype is unclear. Objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate whether an EI deficit is mood-dependent, and which mood symptoms have more impact on EI in BD. Methods: Two hundred and thirty participants aged between 18 and 65 years old were recruited [130 BD patients (51 bipolar I disorder (BDI) and 79 bipolar II disorder (BDII): 39.2% males; 91 healthy controls (HCs): 48.4% males)]. Minor physical anomalies in bipolar I and bipolar II disorders - Results with the Méhes Scale.

Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are external markers of abnormal brain development, so the more common appearence of these signs among bipolar I and bipolar II patients can confirm the possibility of a neurodevelopmental deficit in these illnesses. The aim of the present study was to investigate the rate and topological profile of minor physical anomalies in patients with bipolar I and - first in literature - with bipolar II disorders compared to matched healthy control subjects. Using a list of 57 minor physical anomalies (the Méhes Scale), 30 bipolar I and 30 bipolar II patients, while as a

Five-year outcome of bipolar I and II disorders: findings of the Jorvi Bipolar Study.

OBJECTIVES: The long-term outcome of bipolar disorder (BD) has been extensively investigated. However, previous studies may be biased towards hospitalized patients with bipolar I disorder (BD-I), and generalizability to the current treatment era remains uncertain. In this naturalistic study, we followed a secondary-care cohort of patients with BD. METHODS: In the Jorvi Bipolar Study, 191 patients with BD-I and bipolar II disorder (BD-II) were followed using a life-chart method. Interviews were conducted at six months, 18 months, and five years. Time to full remission, time to first recurrence…

Antidepressant-associated mania or hypomania: a comparison with personality and bipolarity features of bipolar I disorder.

BACKGROUND: Hypomania/mania during antidepressant treatment is often neglected by clinicians. There are no specific diagnostic criteria for hypomania and mania associated by antidepressant treatment in the bipolar spectrum. The aim of this study is to compare various characteristics of bipolar I disorder and antidepressant-associated mania. METHOD: In this study, 76 bipolar patients who met DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder-type I in remission from mania or depression (Group 1; n = 44) and patients with major depression in remission, who had mania associated by antidepressant treatment (Gr…

Bipolar disorder and somatic diseases: Focus on oxidative stress markers.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with a substantial burden of somatic diseases, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and inflammatory conditions. However, the biological continuity linking the core pathophysiology of BD to these somatic manifestations remains poorly understood. Oxidative stress is increasingly recognized as a shared biological process across many medical conditions that commonly co-occur with BD and has been extensively investigated using diverse biomarkers, consistently demonstrating redox imbalance across illness stages and mood states. This evidence supports oxid…
