Peripheral manifestations of nigrostriatal neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative condition, is characterized by dysfunction of dopaminergic pathways leading to prominent movement and non-movement disorders, including cognitive decline and memory loss. The clinical symptoms of PD progressively worsen over time, and there is no precise confirmatory laboratory test for early diagnosis. Although abnormal neuroimaging signatures and changes in cerebrospinal fluid represent significant diagnostic value, their limited accessibility, high cost, and invasiveness restrict their clinical applications. As a potential alternative, blood-bor

Transmission of West Nile virus from an organ donor to four transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: In August 2002, fever and mental-status changes developed in recipients of organs from a common donor. Transmission of West Nile virus through organ transplantation was suspected. METHODS: We reviewed medical records, conducted interviews, and collected blood and tissue samples for testing with a variety of assays. Persons who donated blood to the organ donor and associated blood components were identified and tested for West Nile virus. RESULTS: We identified West Nile virus infection in the organ donor and in all four organ recipients. Encephalitis developed in three of the org

Predictive factors for perinatal bacterial transmission from colonized mothers to delivered very-low-birth-weight infants: a retrospective cohort study.

This study investigated the predictive factors for perinatal bacterial transmission in very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWIs) born to mothers with a history of intrapartum colonization. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 173 VLBWIs, wherein pathogens were confirmed in maternal cultures obtained from the blood, urine, and vagina during the intrapartum period from 2013 to 2020. Newborns were categorized based on microbiological tests, including gastric aspirates, endotracheal aspirates, blood, and skin/nasal swab cultures collected immediately after birth. Infants whose cultures

Knowledge and attitudes of hospital staff to occupational exposure to bloodborne viruses.

In order to assess awareness of occupational risk of exposure to bloodborne viruses a questionnaire was sent to 245 health care workers, representing a 10% sample of employees with patient contact in a large teaching hospital in Scotland, stratified by occupational group. One hundred and eight questionnaires (44%) were returned. Seventy per cent of respondents in laboratory and clinical areas described themselves as having sufficient knowledge for their own area of practice, but many gave incorrect answers or expressed uncertainty about the infectivity of HIV and hepatitis B and hepatitis C vi

Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in ticks removed from skin of people and circumstances of being bitten - research from the area of Poland, 2012-2014.

INTRODUCTION: During feeding, the tick sucks blood from the host along with the pathogens that are in the blood, simultaneously exchanging its own pathogens with the host. Humans can also be a host. It is important to understand the most typical circumstances in which people might become infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. This knowledge will help to prepare health education programmes aimed at the prevention of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the percentage of ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, depending on the ci

Spatial and sex-specific dissection of the Anopheles gambiae midgut transcriptome.

BACKGROUND: The midgut of hematophagous insects, such as disease transmitting mosquitoes, carries out a variety of essential functions that mostly relate to blood feeding. The midgut of the female malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae is a major site of interactions between the parasite and the vector. Distinct compartments and cell types of the midgut tissue carry out specific functions and vector borne pathogens interact and infect different parts of the midgut. RESULTS: A microarray based global gene expression approach was used to compare transcript abundance in the four major female

Neotropical bats as sentinels for emerging zoonoses in Central America: A case study identifying Trypanosoma cruzi in bats from Belize using metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

Emerging zoonoses remain a global public health concern. Surveillance of infectious and vector-borne diseases is vital for predicting and mitigating detrimental effects of zoonotic spillover events. Beyond assessing what microorganisms are circulating in specific environments, it is important to understand how potential reservoir hosts, especially animals such as bats, participate in pathogen transmission. Bats can host and potentially spread infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. However, bats can also act as sentinels that test positive for pathogenic microorganisms wit

Genome dynamics of Bartonella grahamii in micro-populations of woodland rodents.

BACKGROUND: Rodents represent a high-risk reservoir for the emergence of new human pathogens. The recent completion of the 2.3 Mb genome of Bartonella grahamii, one of the most prevalent blood-borne bacteria in wild rodents, revealed a higher abundance of genes for host-cell interaction systems than in the genomes of closely related human pathogens. The sequence variability within the global B. grahamii population was recently investigated by multi locus sequence typing, but no study on the variability of putative host-cell interaction systems has been performed. RESULTS: To study the populat

Prospective serological and molecular cross-sectional study focusing on Bartonella and other blood-borne organisms in cats from Catalonia (Spain).

BACKGROUND: There is limited clinical or epidemiological knowledge regarding Bartonella infection in cats, and no serological studies have compared the presence of antibodies against different Bartonella species. Moreover, there are limited feline Bartonella studies investigating co-infections with other vector-borne pathogens and the associated risk factors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate Bartonella spp. infections and co-infections with other pathogens in cats from Barcelona (Spain) based on serological and/or molecular techniques and to determine associated risk f

Transmission of methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus to a preterm infant through breast milk.

UNLABELLED: Contrary to traditional belief, breast milk is not a sterile fluid, even in healthy women. Breast milk may contain pathogenic bacteria that could cause serious infections especially in premature infants. There is no recommendation to evaluate breast milk routinely for pathogenic bacteria. However discontinuation of breastfeeding is not recommended even the mother had mastitis, because it is believed this will not pose a risk to infant. This is the report of a premature infant born at the 32nd gestational week who was readmitted to neonatal intensive care unit with late-onset Staphy

Stage- and host-dependent microbiome remodeling and reciprocal changes between Haemaphysalis longicornis and host skin.

Ticks harbor diverse microbial communities that are crucial for their biology and capacity to transmit pathogens. Although interactions between tick and host skin microbiomes are likely to play critical roles in feeding and pathogen transmission, these reciprocal changes during tick-host interactions remain largely unexplored. Here, we used 16S rRNA-seq to investigate how blood feeding by Haemaphysalis longicornis (larvae, nymphs, and adults) influences both the tick microbiome and the host skin microbiome. We further characterized microbial distribution across major tick tissues. Results reve

Thioredoxin 80-activated-monocytes (TAMs) inhibit the replication of intracellular pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Thioredoxin 80 (Trx80) is an 80 amino acid natural cleavage product of Trx, produced primarily by monocytes. Trx80 induces differentiation of human monocytes into a novel cell type, named Trx80-activated-monocytes (TAMs). PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this investigation we present evidence for a role of TAMs in the control of intracellular bacterial infections. As model pathogens we have chosen Listeria monocytogenes and Brucella abortus which replicate in the cytosol and the endoplasmic reticulum respectively. Our data indicate that TAMs efficiently inhibit intracellular growth of both

Diverse blood exposures associated with incident HIV infection in Calabar, Nigeria.

Few types of blood exposures have been assessed in relation to incident HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa, despite evidence that penile-vaginal sex cannot account for the epidemic in the region. To investigate correlates of incident HIV infection in Calabar, Nigeria, we surveyed clients at voluntary HIV counselling and testing centres. Participating clients who tested multiple times were generally similar to those testing only once in terms of demographic characteristics, sexual and blood exposures and HIV prevalence. Blood exposures were common. Serial testers had a 10% annual incidence of
