Trajectories of blood parameters and body weight during inpatient treatment of anorexia nervosa with extreme underweight.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory parameters and body weight are objective markers of physical stability in patients with severe and extreme anorexia nervosa. However, systematic analyses of trajectories during inpatient treatment with high-calorie refeeding and prophylactic phosphate supplementation remain limited in extremely underweight persons. Therefore, it is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of changes in laboratory parameters, body mass index, and factors influencing these trajectories under this treatment approach in patients with severe and extreme anorexia nervosa, who are at par…

Long-term change in body composition following intentional weight loss and its effect on physical function.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A concern with intentional weight loss among middle-aged and older adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the loss of lean mass, which may lead to declining physical function. However, the association between changes in body composition with intentional weight loss and physical function over the long-term is unknown. Thus, we examined the association between changes in body composition and physical function 8 years following an intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI). SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of participants at the Baton Rou

Severe maternal morbidity in twin pregnancies: the impact of body mass index and gestational weight gain.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine whether body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) are associated with severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in twin gestations. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of all twin pregnancies delivered at seven hospitals in New York from 2019 to 2023. Multivariable logistic regression modeled the probability of SMM as a function of BMI group, adjusting for excessive GWG, race-ethnicity, and obstetric comorbidity index. A total of 1,976 twin gestations were included. RESULTS: The SMM rate was 14.0 % (n=276). CONCLUSIONS: Neith

Impact of Lifestyle Changes on Body Weight Gain During Nationwide Lockdown Due to COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, people in Japan were urged to stay at home as much as possible, and this resulted in significant changes in lifestyle behavior. The new lifestyle included factors affecting both energy intake and energy consumption, and it is now thought that weight gain during the lockdown was the result of complex effects. The aim of this study was to determine the relationships among lifestyle habits, laboratory data, and body weight gain during the lockdown using medical check-up data. Methods: A total of 3789 individuals who had undergon…

Three-Dimensional Rotational Angiography to Guide Cardiac Catheterization in Critical Infants Below 5kg of Body Weight.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional rotational angiography (3DRA) is a promising advancement to guide cardiac catheterizations. It is used with restraint in critically ill infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) due to the lack of research conducted within this patient group. METHODS: Data of all infants with CHD and a body weight <5 kg who underwent cardiac catheterization with the use of 3DRA between November 2011 and April 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Primary outcome measures were 3DRA-related periprocedural deaths or major adverse events (MAEs). Secondary outcome measures were 3DRA-r…

UV Irradiation Increases Appetite and Prevents Body Weight Gain through the Upregulation of Norepinephrine in Mice.

UV irradiation of the human skin downregulates lipid synthesis and adipokine production in subcutaneous fat. Recent evidence has suggested that UV exposure limits body weight gain in mouse models of obesity. However, the relationship between norepinephrine and UV irradiation has not been previously reported. Chronic UV exposure stimulated food intake but prevented body weight gain. Leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone, was significantly reduced in the serum of the UV-irradiated mice. In contrast, UV irradiation induced browning of subcutaneous white adipose tissues without increasing physic…

Rocuronium Dosing by Ideal vs Total Body Weight in Obesity: A Prospective, Observational Non-inferiority Study.

BACKGROUND: Providing adequate paralysis and appropriate sedation is challenging in patients with obesity during rapid sequence intubation (RSI). Pharmacokinetic parameters play an important role in dosing of rocuronium due to low lipophilicity. Rocuronium may be dosed based on ideal body weight (IBW). Current guidelines do not offer recommendations for dosing in the setting of obesity. Dosing depends on clinician preference based on total body weight (TBW) or IBW. OBJECTIVE: In this study we performed non-inferiority analysis to compare the intubation conditions, duration of paralysis, and i…

Impaired Perception of Body-Weight Distribution Marks Functional Mobility Problems in Patients Undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Hip osteoarthritis and total hip arthroplasty imply damaged articular and periarticular structures responsible for proprioception, and this damage may impair the accurate perception of body-weight distribution. In this study, we investigated proprioceptive abilities and accuracy perceiving body-weight distribution in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty, and we assessed the associations between these abilities and body perception accuracy with functional mobility testing in 20 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty and 20 age-matched healthy participants. We assessed (a) absolute

Maternal nanoplastic ingestion induces an increase in offspring body weight through altered lipid species and microbiota.

The rapidly increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight, especially in children and adolescents, has become a serious societal issue. Although various genetic and environmental risk factors for pediatric obesity and overweight have been identified, the problem has not been solved. In this study, we examined whether environmental nanoplastic (NP) pollutants can act as environmental obesogens using mouse models exposed to NPs derived from polystyrene and polypropylene, which are abundant in the environment. We found abnormal weight gain in the progeny until 6 weeks of age following the oral

Lifetime Body Weight Trajectories and Risk of Renal Cell Cancer: A Large U.S. Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) is a known risk factor for renal cell cancer (RCC), but data are limited as to the effect of lifetime exposure to excess body weight. METHODS: Using the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (N = 138,614, 527 incident RCCs), we identified several anthropometric measures to capture the lifetime BMI patterns: (i) BMI at specific ages; (ii) adulthood BMI trajectories; (iii) cumulative exposure to overweight/obesity denoted as weighted years of living overweight/obese (WYO); and (iv) weight change during each age span. We conducted multiv…

Whole-body bone mineral density and markers of bone homeostasis in adults with normal-weight obesity.

BACKGROUND: Normal-weight obesity (NWO) describes individuals with a normal body mass index (BMI), but high body fat percent. NWO are at-risk for cardiometabolic diseases, but little is known about their bone health. METHODS: Adults (N = 24) were classified as NWO (n = 12; 5M/7F) or low body fat percent controls (Con; n = 12; 6M/6F). Body composition and whole-body bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed using DXA. A serum bioplex assay was performed to examine markers related to bone formation and resorption. RESULTS: In addition to higher body fat percent and visceral fat, NWO had lower w

Variable body and tissue weight reporting in preclinical cachexia literature may alter study outcomes and interpretation.

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome of body weight loss, muscle wasting and progressive functional decline, affecting many advanced cancer patients and leading to worsened clinical outcomes. Despite inherent limitations of many preclinical cachexia models, including large tumor burden, rapid tumor growth and young age of animals, these animal models are widely used and imperative for the study of cachexia mechanisms and experimental therapeutics. However, there are currently no guidelines for the reporting and representation of data in preclinical cachexia literature. We examined the …
