[The development of cholinesterase activity in the sensitive and motor nuclei of the brain stem in early human embryogenesis].

Distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) in nucleus of various formations of embryonic human brain was studied by histochemical method. Early activity of AChE is characteristic for one formations and early BChE activity is shown for others. In fibers of solitarius tract and particularly of descending tract in the V pair of cranial nerves active AChE was revealed for 7-8-week embryos yet. In 10-12-week human foetuses high total AChE and BChE levels were revealed in brain structures. High AChE activity was observed in caudoventrolateral group of the nucleus of

Vulnerability of the infant brain stem to ischemia: a possible cause of sudden infant death syndrome.

In infants, extreme extension or rotation of the head can occlude one or both vertebral arteries. We sought to determine whether small communicating arteries or asymmetric vertebral arteries could predispose the brain stem to ischemia should such head movements occur. In 68 infants, the carotid, posterior communicating, precommunicator posterior cerebral, basilar and vertebral arteries were fixed in formalin, embedded in resin, the circumferences measured by image analysis, and the relative conductance of blood in each artery per gram of brain calculated. Conductance in the vertebrobasilar and…

The cytogenesis and radial migration of cranial nerve efferent neurons in the developing brain stem of the bovine.

The cytogenesis of motor neurons of the immature brain stem of the bovine has been examined by light-and electron microscopy from the periods of origin and migration of the motor neurons until their transformation into relatively mature neurons in their area of destination. Up to 2.7 cm CRL intensive cell migration occurs from the ventromedial cell column in a ventrolateral direction, leading to the formation of the definitive viscero-efferent nucleus of the facial nerve. Electron-optically these cells exhibit features of immature neurons which are extending leading processes in the direction …

Neuronal antioxidant system and MPTP-induced oxidative stress in the striatum and brain stem of the rat.

Levels of ascorbic acid (AA), dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA), glutathione (GSH), uric acid, dopamine (DA), dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), homovanillic acid (HVA), 3-methoxytyramine (3-MT), noradrenaline (NA), 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), and 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+) were determined in the striatum, striatal synaptosomes, and/or brain stem of 3- and 6-month-old male Wistar rats given MPTP 35-52 mg/kg IP. In older rats, MPTP 35 mg/kg caused a 38% death rate within 15 min-12 h. Levels of MPTP and MPP+ in the striatum, synaptosomes, and brain stem were direc…

The effect of nimodipine on salicylate ototoxicity in the rat as revealed by the auditory evoked brain-stem response.

Experiments have been performed to investigate the ototoxic effects of sodium salicylate administration in anaesthetised rats as recorded by the auditory evoked brain-stem response (AEBR). Sodium salicylate (300 mg kg-1 i.p.) produced time-dependent increases in hearing threshold and decreases in the four principle peaks of the AEBR. Maximum responses were obtained at 4 h post-administration and were highly significant (P < 0.001). In a further series of experiments nimodipine, a calcium channel antagonist which has been suggested as a potential therapy for tinnitus, was administered at a dose

[Trauma to the cranial nerve roots in the pathogenesis of brain stem lesions in severe craniocerebral injury].

A clinico-morphological analysis of results of 65 autopsies has shown that traumatization of cranial nerve roots at the moment of trauma is one of pathogenetical mechanisms of truncal lesions. A group of primary progressing truncal lesions was established which included 81.1% of patients who died at the hospital.

A comparison of acoustic reflex and auditory brain stem response screening of high-risk infants.

This investigation was undertaken to explore the feasibility of screening for hearing impairment in an intensive care nursery population with a combined acoustic stapedius reflex-ABR approach. Acoustic reflex threshold measurements (AR) were made on intensive care nursery patients in an existing ABR screening program. Pass-fail results were determined for the two methods, separately and in combination. AR screening identified all 10 ears that failed the ABR screen. The cost savings of screening with a combined AR-ABR approach was determined for various pass-fail criteria. The results suggest t

[Effect of acupuncture on the catecholamine content in the hypothalamus and brain stem of rats with an experimental stomach ulcer].

Significant increase of dopamine (DA) in hypothalamus and epinephrine (E) in the brain stem were revealed in the experiment on rats with experimental gastric ulcer (EGU). An acupuncture (AP) session produces a prominent increase in DOPA and especially DA in hypothalamus of the rat with EGU. Under the same conditions A, DOPA and DA in the brain stem increased as compared to the control. It is assumed that acupuncture produces a correcting effect on the reconstructive processes of catecholaminergic systems of the brain occurring in visceral pathology.

Clinical presentations of vascular malformations of the brain stem: comparison of angiographically positive and negative types.

Clinical and radiographic features of 63 patients with a vascular malformation of the brain stem are described. On radiological grounds they were divided into two groups: one with angiographically visible lesions (AVAVMs), the other with lesions not seen angiographically, that is, occult (AOVMs). In the first group the initial clinical manifestation was due to haemorrhage in 20 of the 33 cases and consisted of a progressive neurological deficit in 12. In the second group 29 of the 30 initially presented with a brain stem haemorrhage. The latter was often characterised by development of symptom…

[Indices of RNA metabolism in the brain stem of rats under superlethal exposure to ionizing radiation].

A study was made of the content of hnRNA, nuclear poly(A) RNA and biosynthesis of rlnRNA in truncus cerebri of rats divided into 3 groups by the forced swimming test 6-8 min and 60 min after a short-term exposure to sparsely ionizing radiation of 100 Gy. The observed changes in the nuclear RNA metabolism can subsequently lead to the impairment of the synthesis of proteins required for normal functioning of CNS, and to the development of CNS syndrome.

Invasion of cranial nerves and brain stem by herpes simplex virus inoculated into the mouse tongue.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV) of a highly or slightly neuropathogenetic strain was inoculated into the tongues of mice. After appropriate survival times, the animals were killed and portions of the facial and trigeminal nerves as well as the brain stem were examined with virus isolation and immunocytochemistry for the presence of HSV. Both virus strains were demonstrated in the geniculate and trigeminal ganglia and in the CNS portion of the facial and trigeminal nerves, as well as in various brain stem areas including the trigeminal tract and nucleus, the facial and hypoglossal nuclei, and…

Early detection of hearing loss in children with cleft palates by brain-stem auditory response.

The hearing of 23 children with cleft palates was studied at an early age (before 12 months) and before pharyngoplasty using the electrophysiologic method of auditory brain-stem response. Nineteen children showed important degrees of conduction deafness of 50 or 60 dB. Results were compared with those obtained for a group of normal children tested under the same method before age 6 months. No hearing loss was observed in this group. It is concluded that hearing defects appear at an early age in children with cleft palates and are in direct relationship to the malformation. Hypotheses concernin

Effects of pilocarpine on breathing movements in normal, chemodenervated and brain stem-transected fetal sheep.

1. We examined the effects on fetal breathing movements (FBM) and electrocortical activity (ECoG) of the administration of pilocarpine to three groups of fetal sheep in utero: one group had peripheral chemodenervation; one group had peripheral chemodenervation and transection of the brain stem at the level of the colliculi; a third group of sham-operated animals acted as a control. 2. Pilocarpine induced a period of FBM characterized by their high amplitude (ca. 24 mmHg) and low frequency (ca. 0.65 Hz). It also produced low-voltage ECoG. These effects were seen both in normoxia and in hypoxia.…

Brain stem involvement in the effects of chlorpromazine on the monosynaptic reflex of the rat lumbar spinal cord.

The brain stem areas involved in the inhibitory effect of chlorpromazine (CPZ) on the monosynaptic reflex (MSR) in the lumbar spinal cord of rats were investigated following brain stem transection and focal thermo-lesioning. Transection of the medulla oblongata markedly reduced the effect of CPZ, while transection in the mid-brain or more anterior level did not alter the effect of CPZ. With regard to focal lesions at various sites of the brain stem, lesioning of the medial portion of the medulla oblongata most effectively attenuated the MSR inhibition by CPZ and also attenuated the MSR inhibit…
