Comparison of the effects of lower monohydric alcohols and inositol hexaphosphate on the oxidation of hemoglobin by menadione.

Analyses of optical absorption spectra show that the lower monohydric alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol and 1-butanol) exert two distinct effects upon the oxidation of oxyhemoglobin by menadione. As chain length increases from one to three carbons, the rate of oxidation decreases. In contrast, as chain length increases, hemichrome production is enhanced along with the tendency for the oxidized hemoglobin to precipitate. Inositol hexaphosphate, which shifts the hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation curve far to the right, also increases the rate of oxidation. However, the ability of metha

Discovering inhibitor molecules for pathological crystallization of CaOx kidney stones from natural extracts of medical herbs.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Kidney stones is one of the common diseases of the urinary system. The primary cause of kidney stone formation is the thermodynamic supersaturation of lithogenic solutes in urine, which desaturates by nucleation, crystal growth and aggregation of minerals and salts, mainly Calcium oxalate (CaOx). One of the potential therapies is to develop drug molecules to inhibit or prevent CaOx crystallization in urine. Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) provided an efficient approach for the treatment of kidney stones with a specialized-designed recipe of medicinal herbs.

A self-iterative orthogonal base-editing platform enables multiplex N-to-N diversification and genome-scale functional screening in Escherichia coli.

Base editing enables precise genome modification without double-strand breaks but remains limited by narrow editing windows, DNA repair pathway biases, and restricted nucleotide diversity. Here, we report MUTATOR, a MUlTiplexAble and self-iTerative ORthogonal base-editing platform that enables N-to-N diversification in Escherichia coli. MUTATOR combines CWBE and ABE with iterative editing on two complementary DNA strands, thereby overcoming endogenous DNA repair constraints and expanding A-to-N and C-to-N editing outcomes across both strands. This strategy substantially expands accessible nucl

Rhododenol Activates Melanocytes and Induces Morphological Alteration at Sub-Cytotoxic Levels.

Rhododenol (RD), a whitening cosmetic ingredient, was withdrawn from the market due to RD-induced leukoderma (RIL). While many attempts have been made to clarify the mechanism underlying RIL, RIL has not been fully understood yet. Indeed, affected subjects showed uneven skin pigmentation, but the features are different from vitiligo, a skin hypopigmentary disorder, alluding to events more complex than simple melanocyte cytotoxicity. Here, we discovered that rhododenol treatment reduced the number of melanocytes in a pigmented 3D human skin model, Melanoderm™, confirming the melanocyte toxicity

[Effector modeling of the action of ligands of GABA-receptor complex. Functional interaction of the hypothetic alcohol receptor with other subunits of the complex].

The types of the interaction of the pharmacological effects of ethanol and barbiturate antagonists--picrotoxin, bemegride and corasol--were determined. The effect of ethanol was determined as competitive--for the convulsant effects of bicuculline, and non-competitive--for the effects of thiosemicarbazide. The indices of the anticonvulsant effects of n-aliphatic alcohols were compared. It is suggested that n-aliphatic alcohols alter the functional status of the supramolecular GABA-receptor channel ensemble. The pharmacological properties and the elements of the structural similarity of picrotox

Odorant-Binding Protein 17 Mediates the Recognition of Soybean Volatiles in Adult Riptortus pedestris.

RpedOBP17, an odorant-binding protein highly expressed in adult Riptortus pedestris antennae, was systematically investigated using prokaryotic expression, fluorescence competitive binding, molecular docking, site-directed mutagenesis, and RNA interference. Binding assays revealed affinity to six soybean volatile compounds. Molecular docking and mutagenesis identified Ile46 and Phe129 as critical residues for ligand recognition, since alanine substitutions markedly reduced binding. RNAi-mediated knockdown significantly impaired olfactory chemotaxis, with electroantennogram recordings showing a

Renewable fuel gases and important organic compounds production from ethanol dehydrogenation using nickel oxide, a green-synthesized catalyst.

Bioethanol dehydrogenation is a promising route for clean and renewable hydrogen production, aligning with low-carbon economy goals. Additionally, it promotes the synthesis of valuable organic compounds from bioethanol. This study investigated the use of green-synthesized NiO nanoparticles as a catalyst for ethanol dehydrogenation. The highest selectivity for hydrogen production (97.4%) was achieved using 10% NiO at 260 °C. However, at 10% NiO and 280 °C, the fuel gas mixture yielded a higher calculated calorific value (1,231.6 kJ). This condition was used to evaluate the reaction's kinetic ov

Molecular-Level Insights into the Reaction Mechanisms of Reductive Etherification for the Production of Synthetic Biofuels.

Reductive etherification provides a pathway for creating low-carbon-intensity distillate fuel blendstocks and chemicals from biomass-derived alcohols and ketones. In this work, we examine the reductive etherification of representative model compounds, n-butanol and 4-heptanone, to form 4-butoxyheptane over size-controlled Pd nanoparticles supported on NbOPO4 through a combination of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Reaction rate and selectivity trends from packed-bed reactions show that both the catalyst and support are needed to carry out the reaction and that rea

Unveiling the potential of a discrete titania chemiresistor: broad-spectrum sensing of C1-C4 alcohols and precise C3 isomer discrimination in binary mixtures.

The detection, discrimination, and quantification (DDQ) of volatile alcohols using cost-effective, sensitive, and selective sensors are necessary for ensuring regulatory compliance in environmental monitoring, healthcare, and quality control. Semiconducting metal oxide (SMO) sensors are well known for detecting volatile organic compounds; however, their potential for precise discrimination and quantification remains hardly explored to date. The present study demonstrates the development of a cost-effective intelligent system based on a single titania chemiresistor that not only detects C1-C4 p
