Current Knowledge and Ecological and Human Impact Variables Involved in the Distribution of the Dengue Virus by Bats in the Americas.

Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus (DENV), is one of the most important reemerging viral diseases transmitted by arthropods worldwide. … on, human population size, and bat collection site (site inhabited by humans, vegetation cover, and caves) contributed to explain the variation in DENV detection in bats in the Americas. These results provide evidence on the exposure of bats to DENV in different geographic areas of the Americas and a bat sylvatic transmission cycle is very likely to be …

Borrelia persica infection in rock hyraxes.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is an acute infectious disease caused by arthropod-borne spirochetes of the genus Borrelia and characterized by recurrent episodes of fever. Borrelia persica, the causative agent of this disease in Israel, is transmitted by the argasid tick Ornithodoros tholozani. There is little information about the maintenance and possible vertebrate reservoirs of B. persica in nature, but the tick O. tholozani is known to feed on animals that enter its habitat in caves, rock crevices and shady environments. The rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) is commonly found in such habit…

Conservation genetics of the spotted bat: Insights from ancient, historical, and modern samples.

Spotted bats (Euderma maculatum) are cryptic (nocturnal, volant, and roost solitarily) and thus their biology remains largely undescribed. Only 35 specimens were known to science before the mid-1960s. Hence, they are ideal candidates for genetic studies to uncover population genetic diversity and structure, and thereby inform conservation. We analyzed nuclear microsatellite loci (N = 17) and mitochondrial control region sequences from 121 individuals spanning ancient (up to 2,100 years BP), historical (1904-1991), and contemporary (1994-2025) timeframes across the species' range in western Nor

Subarachnoid haemorrhage in paediatric hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia: a case report and literature review.

PURPOSE: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant vascular disorder characterised by telangiectasias and multi-organ arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is rare in children with HHT, and intracranial aneurysms are scarcely reported. We describe the case of a 12-year-old boy with confirmed HHT who presented with a generalised tonic-clonic seizure, followed by headache and neck pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted to identify reported paediatric cases of SAH in patients with HHT. MEDLINE, Embase, the

Humans 40,000 y ago developed a system of conventional signs.

As humans, we store and share information. This allows us to distribute knowledge necessary for survival and to coordinate large groups. Our hominin ancestors harnessed the surfaces of mobile artifacts and cave walls as information carriers since the Paleolithic time period. Theories abound as to the meaning and function of these Paleolithic signs. However, very little is known about their basic, measurable properties. We here analyze a corpus of more than 200 mobile objects of a 43,000 to 34,000 y old Aurignacian culture-associated with the first modern humans to settle in Central Europe. The

Direct radiocarbon dating reveals medieval reuse at the prehistoric site of Grotta Romanelli (Castro, Apulia, Italy).

Grotta Romanelli has long been recognised as one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Mediterranean, preserving a rich assemblage of lithic artefacts, faunal remains, and parietal and mobiliary art, mostly dating to the late Middle and Late Pleistocene. In contrast, human remains recovered from the cave have remained poorly understood, particularly because the chronology of the three best-preserved individuals, excavated between 1900 and 1904, has never been directly radiocarbon dated. Based on stratigraphic evidence, P.E. Stasi referred them to prehistoric times, but this attributio

Classification of Collagens via Peptide Ambiguation, in a Paleoproteomic LC-MS/MS-Based Taxonomic Pipeline.

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) extends the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) Zooarcheology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) "mass fingerprinting" approach to species identification by providing fragmentation spectra for each peptide. However, ancient bone samples generate sparse data containing only a few collagen proteins, rendering target-decoy strategies unusable and increasing uncertainty in peptide annotation. To ameliorate this issue, we present a ZooMS/MS data pipeline that builds on a manually curated Collagen database and comprises

Orbital roof cartilage and bone in human fetuses with special reference to changing territories among the ala minor of the sphenoid, frontal bone, and ethmoid.

The orbital roof in adults consists mainly of the frontal bone (FB), with the ala minor of the sphenoid at the posterior margin. In fetuses, these bones have been observed to overlap at the junction. The present study examined sagittal, frontal, and horizontal histological sections from 38 human fetuses at a gestational age (GA) of approximately 7-39 weeks. At GA 7-8 weeks, the ala minor extended anterolaterally from the orbitosphenoid, covering the posteromedial quadrant of the roof until GA 9 weeks and reaching to almost the center of the roof at late-term. Simultaneously, the FB appeared in

The lateral retrocanthal transorbital endoscopic approach to the middle fossa: cadaveric stepwise approach and review of quantitative cadaveric data.

OBJECTIVE: The lateral retrocanthal transorbital endoscopic approach (LRCTEA) facilitates trajectory to the middle fossa, preserving the lateral canthal tendon and thus avoiding postoperative complications such as eyelid malposition. Here, the authors sought to define the surgical anatomy and technique of LRCTEA using a stepwise approach in cadaveric heads and offer an in-depth examination of existing quantitative data from cadaveric studies. METHODS: The authors performed LRCTEA to the middle cranial fossa under neuronavigation in 7 cadaveric head specimens that underwent high-resolution (1-

Blind spots in brain imaging: a pictorial essay.

Currently, radiologists must interpret large quantities of images and identify diseases on a daily basis. The minimization of errors is crucial for high-quality diagnostic imaging and optimal patient care. Brain imaging is frequently used in clinical practice; however, radiologists are prone to overlook some regions in brain imaging and make perceptual errors, thus leading to missed diagnoses. These regions, also known as "blind spots", comprise a number of intricate areas, including the posterior fossa, cerebral sulci and pia mater, cranial nerves (CNs), intracranial arteries, dural sinuses,

Middle fossa approach for a petrous apex bony spur causing trigeminal neuralgia: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) can arise from trigeminal nerve compression at the root entry zone due to neurovascular conflict, which most often presents in the 6th decade of life. The authors report the case of a young patient with TN with a petrous apex bony spur near the entrance of Meckel's cave, causing compression of the proximal trigeminal nerve. OBSERVATIONS: A 21-year-old woman presented with a 5-year history of progressive right-sided TN. Axial T2 sampling perfection with application optimized contrast using different flip angle evolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) did

Current Applications of Ablative Therapies for Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a syndrome consisting of episodic neuropathic facial pain. Although the precise symptoms vary across individuals, TN is typically described as lancinating electrical shocks triggered by sensory stimuli (light touch, talking, eating, and brushing teeth) that improve with antiepileptic medication (especially carbamazepine), remit spontaneously for weeks to months (pain-free intervals), and do not involve any changes in baseline sensation. The etiology of TN has not been definitively established, but many cases are associated with compression of the trigeminal nerve b

Longitudinal Survey of Coronavirus Circulation and Diversity in Insectivorous Bat Colonies in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Studies have linked bats to outbreaks of viral diseases in human populations such as SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV and the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. METHODS: We carried out a longitudinal survey from August 2020 to July 2021 at two sites in Zimbabwe with bat-human interactions: Magweto cave and Chirundu farm. A total of 1732 and 1866 individual bat fecal samples were collected, respectively. Coronaviruses and bat species were amplified using PCR systems. RESULTS: Analysis of the coronavirus sequences revealed a high genetic diversity, and we identified different sub-viral groups in

Image-guided transthoracic transpedicular microdiscectomy for a giant thoracic disc herniation: patient series.

BACKGROUND: This case series reports on five consecutive patients who underwent image-guided transpedicular transthoracic microdiscectomy. The authors retrospectively reviewed five patients who had undergone Stealth image-guided transpedicular transthoracic microdiscectomy between 2015 and 2021. OBSERVATIONS: Image guidance with O-arm verified critical anatomical landmarks in the setting of large central calcified and/or soft tissue disc prolapse. This allowed limited rib head resection, pedicle removal, and corpectomy to give adequate access and not require interbody fusion. The authors perf

First Report of CC5-MRSA-IV-SCCfus "Maltese Clone" in Bat Guano.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a widespread pathogen that could cause different illnesses in both human and animals. Presence of MRSA in animals raises concerns of their capacity to act as reservoirs, particularly in wild animals. This study aimed to characterize the resistance and virulence patterns of S. aureus strains isolated from bat guano in Algeria. From March to May 2016, 98 bat guano samples from Aokas's cave (Bejaia, Algeria) were collected. Swabs were taken for microbiological studies. Isolates were identified by Vitek® MS system, and antibiotic susceptib

Multi-omics analysis reveals that natural hibernation is crucial for oocyte maturation in the female Chinese alligator.

BACKGROUND: Hibernation in an appropriate environment not only is important for the survival of hibernators in winter, but also is crucial for breeding in the following season for many hibernating species. However, the genetic and epigenetic mechanism underlying this process remain unclear. In the current study, we performed an integrative multi-omics analysis of gonads collected from Chinese alligators that overwintered in wild cave and artificial warmroom to explore transcriptomic and epigenomic alternations in these organs. RESULTS: The data revealed that in the breeding season, female all

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 revealed by a hip pathologic fracture.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 is a rare autosomal inherited syndrome that affects a variety of endocrine tissues such as the parathyroid, endocrine pancreas, and anterior pituitary. Osseous complications are often misdiagnosed. We presented a case of a 46-year-old woman with pathological fractures of the lower limb. She had a history of type 1 diabetes and galactorrhea. Laboratory examinations showed hypercalcemia and an increased level of parathyroid hormone related to hyperparathyroidism. Serum chromogranin A level was increased at 9369 ng/mL (N < 102). A somatostatin receptor scintigr

Surgical Strategy for and Anatomic Locations of Petroapex and Petroclival Meningiomas Based on Evaluation of the Feeding Artery.

BACKGROUND: The anterior transpetrosal (ATP) approach is the most appropriate approach for petroclival meningiomas (PCMs), which are typically located from the dorsum sellae to the upper border of the internal auditory meatus (IAM). Although neurosurgeons can resect over this area if the tumor is detached from the dura, tumors within the indication area for PCMs are not appropriate for the ATP approach, because it can be difficult to evaluate whether the tumor is attached to or only touching the dura. In this study, we investigated the tumor extension area based on an evaluation of the feeding

Intentional Lower Pole Rotation of Anatomic Breast Implants in Chest Wall Deformities.

Several methods have been described for the correction of congenital thoracic wall deformities. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility and clinical results of using standard anatomic breast implants with modified anatomic positioning according to the defect in congenital thoracic wall deformities. Between 2014 and 2015, 5 patients diagnosed with pectus excavatum (PE, n = 4) or pectus carinatum (PC, n = 1) and breast asymmetry or hypoplasia were evaluated. In all patients, a submammary incision and dual-plane subpectoral placement of texturized, anatomic implants were performed. In patients
