Massive Periacetabular Osteolysis Treated With Acetabular Cup Retention and Cemented Screw Fixation.

Management of periacetabular osteolysis is a challenging dilemma in revision total hip arthroplasty. When the acetabular shell is well-fixed, the surgeon may prefer to retain the cup to minimize further bone loss. However, filling the surrounding defect can be difficult if the area of involvement is massive. In this case, holes were created in the existing acetabular cup for supplemental pelvic screws, which were placed using computed tomography navigation, and then the areas of osteolysis were filled with cement. The patient recovered uneventfully, and he was satisfied with the outcome at 4 y

Long-term performance of a low-modulus acrylic cement in a simulated physiological environment.

A vertebroplasty bone cement, designed to exhibit mechanical properties closer to those of the vertebral bone, was investigated. Indeed, adjacent fractures are attributed to an excessive difference in elastic modulus between the vertebrae and the bone cement implying another operation to repair the newly damaged vertebra. The proposed solution to lower the mechanical properties is the introduction of gelatine in the powder of the cement. This low modulus bone cement was studied by quasi-static compression, dynamic mechanical analysis and fatigue tests. Compression testing showed a significant

Design of Self-Compacting Concrete with Reduced Cement Content by Aggregate Packing Method.

This article presents the procedure for designing self-compacting cement concrete characterized by minimal free space and a maximally compacted mineral skeleton. Such a designed mix allows for lower cement consumption and an increased amount of mineral additives. The paper presents a broad analysis of the influence of different aggregate proportions (36 recipes) and verification of the properties of the concrete mix using CEM I 42.5 R cements and fly ash. As a result of the appropriately compacted mineral skeleton, only 17% free space was obtained, which will allow the amount of cement to be r

Durability of a Metakaolin-Incorporated Cement-Based Grouting Material in High Geothermal Tunnels.

To improve the durability of cement-based grout in high geothermal tunnel grouting projects, metakaolin was incorporated to replace 8% of the cement. The permeability, chloride penetration, and sulfate and carbonate erosion tests were carried out on the grout cured at varying temperatures (20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 °C). It was shown that with the increase in curing temperature, the impermeability and resistance to chloride penetration initially increased and then decreased, reaching the highest values at 40 °C. Furthermore, the incorporation of metakaolin into grout enhanced the impermeability by

Fabrication and characterization of reinforced glass ionomer cement by zinc oxide and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles.

This study shows the enhancement of glass ionomer cement (GIC) by incorporating hydroxyapatite (HA) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles to improve its mechanical strength, biological activity, and antibacterial properties. GC is widely used in dental and orthopedic applications due to its bioactivity and biocompatibility, but it suffers from weak antibacterial properties and limited load-bearing capacity. HA, a calcium phosphate compound similar to natural bone, and ZnO, known for its antibacterial and bone-regenerative properties, were integrated into GIC to address these limitations. The modi

[Translated article] In vitro elution of local anaesthetics from PMMA bone cement.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Currently, we do not have a gold standard for pain management after total knee arthroplasty. We may use one of more drug delivery systems, none of which are ideal. An ideal depot delivery system would provide therapeutic, nontoxic, doses of drug at the surgical side, especially during 72h postoperatively. The bone cement used in arthroplasties has been used as a drug delivery system, especially antibiotics, since 1970. Based on this principle, we developed this study with the aim to characterize the elution profile of two local anaesthetics (lidocaine hydrochloride and bupi

Microcrack behavior in bone: Stress field analysis at osteon cement line tips.

Bone microstructure governs microcrack propagation complexity. Current research, relying on linear elastic fracture mechanics, inadequately considers authentic multi-level structures, like cement lines and osteons, impacting stress intensity at cracks. This study, by constructing models encompassing single or multiple osteons, delves into the influence of factors like crack length, osteon radius, and modulus ratio on the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. Employing a fracture mechanics phase-field approach to simulate crack propagation paths, it particularly explores the role of cement
