Mental and somatic health and social adjustment in ordinary school children during childhood and adolescence related to central nervous functions as expressed by a complex reaction time.

A cohort of ordinary Swedish children were followed up from school entry through childhood and adolescence and checked retrospectively from birth to the age of 6 years regarding psychiatric and physical health and contact with the social welfare authorities. The children were allocated to different risk groups at age 7 on the basis of their psycho-physical development expressed as complex reaction time (CRT). It was previously shown that many of the slow CRT children have problems in psychomotor and language development at school, and that many leave compulsory school with poor achievements in

Inequalities in educational outcomes in individuals with childhood experience of out-of-home care: What are driving the differences?

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that individuals with experience of out-of-home care (foster family care or residential care) in childhood are educationally disadvantaged compared to their peers. In order to be better equipped to design interventions aimed at improving the educational outcomes of children for whom society has assumed responsibility, this study seeks to further our understanding about which factors that contribute to the educational disparities throughout the life course. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from a cohort of more than 13,000 Swedes, of which around 7% have ch

Can coders abstract child maltreatment variables from child welfare administrative data and case narratives for public health surveillance in Canada?

BACKGROUND: Public health surveillance is essential to inform programs that aim to eradicate child maltreatment (CM) and to provide services to children and families. However, collection of CM data imposes a burden on child welfare workers (CWWs). This study assesses the feasibility of hiring coders to abstract the required information from administrative records and case narratives. METHODS: Based on a convenience sample of child welfare data from Manitoba, Canada, two coders abstracted information on 181 alleged CM cases. The coders completed a short web-based questionnaire for each case to

Permanent Housing for Child Welfare-Involved Families: Impact on Child Maltreatment Overview.

A longitudinal randomized controlled trial tested whether access to permanent housing reduces child maltreatment among inadequately housed families under investigation for child abuse and neglect. The study followed homeless and child welfare-involved families randomly assigned to receive a referral for housing subsidies plus housing case management (n = 75, 196 children) or housing case management alone (n = 75, 186 children). Latent growth models examined change in caregiver-reported frequencies of psychological aggression, physical abuse, and neglect toward children at five time points acro

Understanding neuro-pulmonary dysfunction in children with neurodisability.

Children with neurodisability experience a high burden of respiratory morbidity, which remains a leading cause of hospitalisation, long-term lung disease and reduced quality of life. Respiratory problems in this population often reflect shared underlying neuro-pulmonary pathophysiology that evolves across a child's development. In this narrative review, we describe how respiratory vulnerability arises from three interacting domains: dysregulated central control of breathing; impaired neuromuscular activation and coordination; and altered respiratory mechanics related to abnormal tone, weakness

Addressing the Complexity of Heterogeneity: Profiles of Adolescent Girls Who Have Been Sexually Abused.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may have devastating effects, yet, there is considerable heterogeneity among adolescent girls who have experienced it. Addressing this heterogeneity could help to tailor practices to their particular needs. The objective was to identify profiles among adolescent girls who have been sexually abused to determine whether they exhibit distinct outcomes. Participants were drawn from a Child Protection sample of adolescent girls who have been sexually abused with contact (n = 185). Abuse and stressful events were measured using a rating scale completed by a research assi

Recipients of children's and adolescents' disclosures of childhood sexual abuse: A systematic review.

Disclosure of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex, multifaceted process with many barriers that are largely shaped by individual, familial, and systemic characteristics. Children and youth tend to withhold or delay disclosure for many years, such that most CSA goes unreported. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence regarding the pathways and recipients of CSA disclosures and to identify potential developmental and gender differences in the recipients of disclosures. Thirty-seven studies conducted between 1990 and 2017 were selected for review. Results indicated that children

Family poly-victimization and cyberbullying among adolescents in a Chinese school sample.

The sustained increase in their use of social networking facilitates the development of adolescents but comes with the risk of cyberbullying, which creates new challenges in regard to adolescent protection. Past evidence shows that family victimization may play an essential role in the way adolescents learn cyberbullying behaviors. Yet, research on the co-occurrence of family victimization and cyberbullying is limited. This study aims to investigate the associations between cyberbullying and family victimization among adolescents, and to examine the health correlates of cyberbullying and famil

A Systematic Review of Reviews of the Outcome of Severe Neglect in Underresourced Childcare Institutions.

The aim of the systematic review described in this article was to determine the outcomes for individuals exposed to severe neglect in congregate care institutions such as orphanages. In this context, severe neglect refers to failure to meet children's basic physical, developmental, and emotional needs due to inadequate resources. In this systematic review of previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses, searches of 10 databases were conducted, 18 papers that met inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected for review, their quality was assessed, and data were extracted and synthesized. Assessing maternal risk for fetal-infant mortality: a population-based study to prioritize risk reduction in a healthy start community.

Study goals were to distinguish between maternal risk factors for fetal versus infant mortality, and to identify which maternal characteristics contributed the greatest risk of mortality overall. This case-control retrospective study abstracted data on more than forty maternal characteristics from 261 prenatal and delivery records: all 26 fetal deaths, all 40 infant deaths and 195 randomly selected surviving births in a high-mortality Healthy Start community. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. The fetal-mortality population was significantly more likely than the infant-mortali

Adolescent Overdose Mortality and Child Protection System Involvement: Evidence from a California Birth Cohort, 2000-2005.

Objectives. To examine overdose mortality across 4 levels of child protection system (CPS) involvement during childhood. Methods. Using integrated vital birth, death, and CPS records of California births (2000-2005) followed through 2024 (n = 3 208 771), we identified 747 adolescent overdose decedents and matched each to 4 comparison adolescents (n = 2988). We categorized CPS exposure as no contact, referral, substantiated referral, or foster care. Using conditional Poisson regression, we estimated overdose prevalence by CPS involvement level. Results. Overall, 69.9% of decedents had at least

Exploitation, Labor and Sex Trafficking of Children and Adolescents: Health Care Needs of Patients.

Exploitation and labor and sex trafficking of children and adolescents is a major public health problem in the United States and throughout the world. Significant numbers of US and non-US-born children and adolescents (including unaccompanied immigrant minors) are affected by this growing concern and may experience a range of serious physical and mental health problems associated with human trafficking and exploitation (T/E). Despite these considerations, there is limited information available for health care providers regarding the nature and scope of T/E and how providers may help recognize

Refugee Children and Interventions for Depression: A Review of Current Interventions and Implications of the Ecological Context.

As of 2018, over 25.4 million people worldwide meet the criteria to be considered refugees, the highest number on record. Over half of these individuals are under 18 years old, leaving approximately 12 million children to cope with the trauma and stress typically encountered by refugees. Increased rates of depression in this population are well-documented in the literature. This article reviews the ecological determinants of depression for displaced children and current empirical methods for alleviating depression across contexts. PubMed and PsycINFO databases were reviewed for articles that m

Frontier nurse-midwives and antepartum emergencies, 1925 to 1939.

This article examines how the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) utilized nurse-midwives to respond to antepartum emergencies such as preterm birth, eclampsia, malpresentation, and hemorrhage in the women of Appalachia in the years 1925 to 1939. Particular attention is given to the preparation that nurse-midwives received during their midwifery education to prevent and respond to emergencies. Using traditional historical research methods and primary source material from the FNS papers in the Special Collections, University of Kentucky Libraries, Lexington, Kentucky, this article describes the nurs
