Health-Related Quality of Life for Children and Adolescents with Specific Language Impairment: A Cohort Study by a Learning Disabilities Reference Center.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of children with specific language impairment (SLI). STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective sample at a Learning Disabilities Reference Center, proxy-rated HRQOL (KIDSCREEN-27) was assessed for children with SLI and unaffected children from January 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. Quality of life predictors for children with SLI were evaluated by recording the length and number of speech therapy and psychotherapy sessions and the specific school organization that the children had participated in. The KIDSCREEN scores of the two groups were co

A controlled study of the effects of EEG biofeedback on cognition and behavior of children with attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities.

Eighteen children with ADD/ADHD, some of whom were also LD, ranging in ages from 5 through 15 were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. The experimental condition consisted of 40 45-minute sessions of training in enhancing beta activity and suppressing theta activity, spaced over 6 months. The control condition, waiting list group, received no EEG biofeedback. No other psychological treatment or medication was administered to any subjects. All subjects were measured at pretreatment and at posttreatment on an IQ test and parent behavior rating scales for inattention, hyperactivity, and a

Effects of Mindfulness-Based Positive Behavior Support (MBPBS) Training Are Equally Beneficial for Mothers and Their Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder or With Intellectual Disabilities.

Parenting a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disabilities (IDs) can be stressful for many parents. Mindfulness-Based Positive Behavior Support (MBPBS) is a customized mindfulness program that enables parents and other caregivers to reduce their perceived psychological stress to normative levels through mindfulness procedures and to support children with ASD or ID to self-manage their challenging behaviors through positive behavior support (PBS). In this study, we evaluated whether MBPBS would have differential effects on the stress levels of mothers of adolescents with

Do gifted children without specific learning disabilities read more efficiently than typically developing children?

INTRODUCTION: There are no published data on the written language skills of gifted children (GC). The objective of the present study was to evaluate reading abilities of GC vs. normative data from typically developing French children (TDC). Like English, French is considered to be an opaque language. METHOD: GC completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scales and a battery of language tests. Only children with a score two standard deviations (SD) above the norm were included. GC with current or past academic difficulties or specific learning disorders were excluded. The GC's scores were compared wi

The quality of the relationship between typically developing children and their siblings with and without intellectual disability: Insights from children's drawings.

The current study examined the relationships of typically developing (TD) children with siblings with and without intellectual disabilities (ID), as expressed in TD children's drawings and questionnaires answered by TD children and their mothers. It also examined group differences in the sibling relationships, as well as the associations between having a sibling with or without ID and sibling relationships, and TD children's social-emotional adjustment. Participants were mothers and their TD children (8-13 years). Some had ID siblings ID (N=28); others had TD siblings (N=31). Sibling relations

Differential impact on parental quality of life: Comparing parents to children with autism spectrum disorder and those with other disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Limited research has examined parental quality of life (QoL) for caregivers of children with special needs, mostly comparing parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to those with typical development. This study examines QoL and related variables during the COVID-19 pandemic among two comparable groups: parents of children with ASD and parents of children with other diagnoses (non-ASD). METHOD: The sample included 175 Israeli parents (ASD = 101; non-ASD = 74). The parents were surveyed about the pandemic's effects on family life, child's function, and their own psyc

The experience of disabled children as inpatients: a structured review and synthesis of qualitative studies reporting the views of children, parents and professionals.

Disabled children are a broad group that includes those with complex, special or additional health needs as a result of chronic physical, cognitive, communication or behavioural problems. These children are more frequently admitted to hospital than other children; however, there appears to be relatively little research on their experience as inpatients. The aim of this structured review and synthesis was to integrate findings from qualitative studies reporting the experience of disabled children when they are hospital inpatients. Inclusion criteria were: qualitative studies that focused on the

Intellectual disability and autistic behavior and their modifying factors in children with tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is classified among developmental epileptic encephalopathies, where epilepsy is often associated with comorbidities such as intellectual disability and autistic behavior. The recently introduced term TAND (TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorders) encompasses the wide range of cognitive, behavioral, psychiatric, and psychosocial manifestations seen in TSC. The severity of these comorbidities is influenced by several factors, including the TSC1/TSC2 genotype, the age of epilepsy onset, the number, volume and type of cortical tubers, the interval between epileps

Clinical use of whole-genome sequencing in children with developmental delay or intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Determining the underlying cause of developmental delay or intellectual disability (DD/ID) is challenging yet crucial. Establishing a genetic basis for cases of unexplained DD/ID is integral to informing clinical decisions and anticipating patient outcomes. In this report, we share our institutional insights derived from employing whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to investigate unexplained DD/ID in pediatric populations. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 115 children aged 1 month to 16 years with unexplained DD/ID who underwent WGS. We analyzed demographic profiles and

Who cares about the carers? A call to action on behalf of mothers of disabled children.

This 'perspective' article is an urgent call to action on behalf of mothers (and indeed fathers) of disabled children in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so draws attention to the 'perfect storm' experienced by United Kingdom-based parents of reduced support and increased stress, coupled with the effects of isolation. It also illuminates some of the impact of actions taken, and not taken, during and after the pandemic and the enduring effects for working parent-carers. In doing so I argue that, despite facing these extreme challenges, these parents have been a neglected group from b

A novel drive-through approach to vaccination of children and young people with neurodevelopmental disability.

Disparities in preventative health care likely contribute to comorbidities associated with neurodevelopmental disability. These comorbidities are risk factors for poor outcomes of COVID-19, making COVID-19 vaccination a priority for this population. In mid-2021, the Australian Technical Advisory Group (ATAGI) recommended the COVID-19 vaccination rollout include children and young people at risk of severe COVID-19 associated disease. This cohort included children/young people severely immunocompromised, with disability, and/or complex, multiple health conditions. Children and young people with
