The natural history of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infections can vary widely; infections can spontaneously resolve but can also last from months to years, potentially progressing to cause significant pathology. The host and bacterial factors underlying this wide variation are not completely understood, but emphasize the bacterium's capacity to evade/adapt to the genital immune response, and/or exploit local environmental conditions to survive this immune response. IFNγ is considered to be a primary host protective cytokine against endocervical C. trachomatis infections. IFNγ acts by inducin

Enzootic abortion of ewes (EAE) due to infection with the obligate intracellular pathogen Chlamydia (C.) abortus is an important zoonosis leading to considerable economic loss to agriculture worldwide. The pathogen can be transmitted to humans and may lead to serious infection in pregnant women. Knowledge about epidemiology, clinical course and transmission to humans is hampered by the lack of reliable diagnostic tools. Immunoreactive proteins, which are expressed in infected animals and humans, may serve as novel candidates for diagnostic marker proteins and represent putative virulence facto

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia and gonorrhea infections can lead to serious and costly sequelae in women, but sequelae in men are rare. In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, female jail inmates in Maricopa County (Phoenix area), Arizona, are screened for these infections. Owing to lack of evidence of screening benefits in men, male inmates are tested and treated based on symptoms only.
METHODS: We developed a probabilistic simulation model to simulate chlamydia and gonorrhea infections in Maricopa County jail male inmates and transmissions to female partners per

BACKGROUND: New cases of gonorrhoea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) infections have been steadily increasing in Scandinavian countries over the last decade. There is a particular urgency in reducing new infections as isolation of multiple drug resistant strains of gonorrhoea is becoming more frequent. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and sites of infection of common sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in men who have sex with men (MSM).
METHODS: We have performed a retrospective analysis of the three major STIs, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and

In a retrospective analysis of asymptomatic men who have sex with men visiting an urban municipal sexually transmitted disease clinic, 83.8% of chlamydial and gonococcal infections would have been missed by urethral screening, compared with 9.8% by screening the rectum and pharynx. Extragenital screening is critical to the provision of comprehensive sexual health services for men who have sex with men.

The controversial discussion about the role of Chlamydia pneumoniae in atherosclerosis cannot be solved without a reliable diagnosis that allows discrimination between past and persistent infections. Using a proteomic approach and immunoblotting with human sera, we identified 31 major C. pneumoniae Ags originating from 27 different C. pneumoniae proteins. More than half of the proteins represent Chlamydia Ags not described previously. Using a comparative analysis of spot reactivity Pmp6, OMP2, GroEL, DnaK, RpoA, EF-Tu, as well as CpB0704 and CpB0837, were found to be immunodominant. The compar

A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted comparing a commercially available chlamydial optical immunoassay (OIA) to the chlamydial ligase chain reaction (LCR). Endocervical samples from 415 outpatients visiting clinics from three hospitals in South Kalimantan, Indonesia, were evaluated. Relative to the LCR, the overall sensitivity and specificity of the OIA were 31.6 and 98.9%, respectively. The sensitivity of the OIA varied among the three hospital laboratories, ranging from 20 to 50%. The OIA performance was slightly lower on samples from patients attending dermatovenereology clini

In this study, 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine-, cytochalasin B-, and cycloheximide-treated and untreated McCoy cells were inoculated with representative strains of Chlamydia trachomatis serotypes, as well as with clinical specimens from a pediatric population, and the quality and quantity of the cytoplasmic inclusions were examined. Cycloheximide treatment consistently rendered the highest number of quality inclusions per milliliter of any method tested for both the laboratory strains (P less than 0.001) and the clinical isolates (P less than 0.01). The inclusion counts in untreated McCoy cells were e

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI) globally, and re-infections are common. Current Australian guidelines recommend re-testing for chlamydia 3 months after treatment to identify possible re-infection. Patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT) has been proposed to control chlamydia re-infection among heterosexuals. We aimed to identify determinants and the prediction of chlamydia re-testing and re-infection within 1 year among heterosexuals with chlamydia to identify potential PDPT candidates.
METHODS: Our baseline data i

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infections with severe detrimental effects on pregnant women and fetuses. CTGI increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy, exogenous fetal infection, and respiratory complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. According to the different published reports, this systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to evaluate the global prevalence of CTGI in pregnant women.
METHODS: Initial searching was applied using valid databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect, Embase, WoS, Scopus, and Google

The obligate intracellular pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis replicates in a specialized membrane-bound compartment where it repositions host organelles during infection to acquire nutrients and evade host surveillance. We describe a bacterial effector, Dre1, that binds specifically to dynactin associated with host microtubule organizing centers without globally impeding dynactin function. Dre1 is required to reposition the centrosome, mitotic spindle, Golgi apparatus, and primary cilia around the inclusion and contributes to pathogen fitness in cell-based and mouse models of infection. We utiliz

Chlamydia trachomatis infection has been implicated as a potential risk factor for ovarian cancer (OC), but evidence remains inconclusive. This study aims to assess the association between C. trachomatis infection and OC risk using a systematic review and meta-analysis. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO from their inception to October 2024. Observational studies examining the association between C. trachomatis infection and OC risk were included. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using random-effects models. Subgroup an
