BACKGROUND: Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) is a benign vascular tumor that is not associated with systemic abnormalities and its pathogenesis is unknown. Most choroidal hemangiomas remain stable in size, and treatment is periodic observation unless complicated by an overlying serous retinal detachment.

The paper presents a clinical case of colobomatous fossette of the optic nerve papilla complicated with macular decolation, in association with the malignant melanoma of the choroid. Some aspects of the pathogeny of the retinal decoloration are discussed in this context. Some possible corrections between the two border retinal decolorations--the serous interpapillary macular decoloration and the retinal decoloration secondary to the melanoma of the choroid--are also proposed.

A 39-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of general malaise, polyuria, disturbance of ocular movement and right cervical tumor. Blood examination revealed increased parathyroid hormone, hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia, suggestive of hyperparathyroidism. Histology of the resected tumor revealed a benign parathyroid adenoma. Ten cases of choroid plexus tumors (3 papillomas and 7 carcinomas) were tested for the presence of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and cytokeratin. None of the papillomas and one of the carcinomas were positive with GFAP antisera. Cytokeratin-positive cells were present in 2 of 7 carcinomas and in all papillomas. There seems to be a positive correlation between the degree of the tumor differentiation and the expression of intermediate filaments.

A case of pigmented, well differentiated, choroid plexus papilloma is reported. A 45-year-old man came to our hospital complaining of attacks of vertigo and nausea. Skull X-ray films and CT scan demonstrated a calcified tumor in the left middle fossa. A choroid plexus papilloma was found in the right lateral ventricle of a five-month-old boy. Though it was associated with an important communicating hydrocephalus, it was seen at operation to be freely mobile and did not directly obstruct the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. Computerized axial tomography was the most helpful para-clinical investigation for diagnostic purposes, and for follow-up study. A series of clinically suspected malignant melanomas was used to test the usefulness of 67Gallium citrate using external counting techniques. The comparison was made with angiograms, 32P uptake, and clinical examinations. 67Gallium citrate uptkae proved to be an unreliable diagnostic tool with the described techniques.
