Negative affect and pain catastrophizing link borderline personality disorder to pain: Replicating and extending the borderline personality disorder-pain association.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is commonly comorbid with chronic pain and associated with pain symptoms and interference. BPD features are associated with negative affect, which is associated with pain catastrophizing and/or pain anxiety, and finally pain severity or interference. We extended models of the BPD-pain associations in a chronic pain sample (N = 202), highlighting the role of negative affect (depression and anxiety) and pain catastrophizing, and exploring the potential benefit of emotional suppression/distraction as a component of these associations. BPD symptoms were positi

Modeling impaired insight after drug use in rodents.

Impaired insight in substance use disorder has been argued to reflect a global deficit in using cognitive models to mentally simulate possible future outcomes. The process of mentally simulating outcomes allows us to understand our beliefs about their causes, that is, to have insight and thereby avoid potentially negative outcomes. However, work in humans cannot address whether impaired insight and its neural/neurochemical sequalae are present prior to the development of a substance use disorder, a consequence of substance use, or a combination of both. This is because baseline measurements pr

No impaired integration in psychopathy: Evidence from an illusory conjunction paradigm.

Progress in psychopathy research has been hampered by ongoing contention about its fundamental cause. The Impaired Integration theory of psychopathy provides an attention-based account of information integration abnormalities. We set out to evaluate the suggested mechanism via an innovative application of the well-established illusory conjunction paradigm. Two hundred participants were recruited by utilizing a psychopathic-trait-maximization technique, sampling individuals from an ex-prisoner and a population sample. We found no support for information integration deficits in psychopathic indi

[Intracerebral hemorrhage under platelet inhibition and oral anticoagulation in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy].

Oral anticoagulation in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a therapeutic challenge. The association of cerebral amyloid angiopathy with intracerebral hemorrhage, a high mortality of intracerebral hemorrhage especially under oral anticoagulation and the high risk of recurrent bleeding require a multidisciplinary approach and a thorough risk-benefit analysis. Vitamin K antagonists increase the risk of intracerebral bleeding and the accompanying mortality by 60% and should be avoided if possible or reserved for special clinical situations (e.g. mechanical aortic valve replacement). Group identification attenuates the effect of historical trauma on mental health: A study of Iraqi Kurds.

Kurds have a long history of victimization and struggle for even the most basic rights. This is reflected in a widely shared belief, according to which they have "no friends but the mountains." Such difficult history may have ongoing negative impact on mental health of present-day Kurds. This article investigates the relations between cognitive availability of historical trauma, historical trauma symptoms, and negative mental health outcomes in a sample of young Kurds who live in the Region of Kurdistan in Iraq. We also examined the potential protective role of strong identification as members

Spontaneous regression of multiple intracranial capillary hemangiomas in a newborn-long-term follow-up and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial capillary hemangiomas (ICHs) have a natural history and behavior that is very different from intracranial cavernous malformations. The literature is not consistent as to the best management strategy for ICHs. CASE DESCRIPTION: Our patient is a 40-day-old male infant who presented with progressive increase in head circumference and multiple cutaneous capillary and ICHs. Obstructive hydrocephalus necessitated urgent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion, but no other surgical intervention was pursued due to the high risk-to-benefit ratio. All intracranial lesions spontane

Social anxiety disorder and memory for positive feedback.

Clinical theorists postulate that individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) display memory biases such that recall of social events becomes more negative with time; however, alternative memory models have also been proposed. Research has focused predominantly on selective recall of negative information with inconsistent findings. The goal of the current study was to examine potential biases in recall of positive social feedback. Individuals with SAD (n = 59) and nonanxious community controls (n = 63) engaged in an unexpected public speaking task and received standardized positive or neutr

[Treatment-resistant schizophrenia].

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder that causes severe cognitive, behavioral and social dysfunction, responsible for a shortening of the life expectancy of patients, with an increased risk of suicide, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The management of patient with schizophrenia is global and atypical antipsychotics, antagonizing dopamine pathway, are the first line pharmacological treatment. Clozapine, the first atypical antipsychotic discovered, is currently still the most effective molecule against schizophrenia, while causing less extrapyramidal side effects. Its particular pharmacolo

This study examined the effects of aging and bilingualism on neural speech perception in Spanish-English (SE) bilinguals and American Englis … ry discrimination mechanisms during aging, potentially contributing to greater neural resilience or cognitive reserve. This study contributes to a growing body of evidence suggesting that bilingualism may shape auditory and cognitive processing across the lifespan. The findings also highlight the importance of considering bilingual experience in the assessment and …

Childhood Neurotoxicity and Brain Resilience to Adverse Events during Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study used childhood cancer survivors as a novel model to study whether children who experience central nervous system (CNS) injury are at higher risk for neurocognitive impairment associated with subsequent late onset chronic health conditions (CHCs). METHODS: Adult survivors of childhood cancer (n = 2,859, ≥10 years from diagnosis, ≥18 years old) completed a comprehensive neurocognitive battery and clinical examination. Neurocognitive impairment was defined as age-adjusted z score < 10th percentile. Participants impaired on ≥3 tests had global impairment. CHCs were graded us

Joint perception biases subjective awareness reports.

Humans are fundamentally social creatures, yet how our social context modulates perceptual decision making remains unknown. In a joint decision-making paradigm, we examined whether participants' subjective awareness reports in a perceptual detection task are influenced by the awareness reports of a computerized partner. Across multiple experiments, we reveal that participants match their awareness reports to those of their partner-irrespective of whether the partner was prone to detecting the stimulus more or less often than themselves. Critically, "matched" awareness reports continued once th

Presynaptic recycling pool density regulates spontaneous synaptic vesicle exocytosis rate and is upregulated in the presence of β-amyloid.

Synapses represent a fundamental unit of information transfer during cognition via presynaptic vesicle exocytosis. It has been established that evoked release is probabilistic, but the mechanisms behind spontaneous release are less clear. Understanding spontaneous release is vital, as it plays a key role in maintaining synaptic connections. We propose a model framework for spontaneous release where the reserve pool geometrically constrains recycling pool vesicles, creating an entropic force that drives spontaneous release rate. We experimentally support this framework using SEM, fluorescence m

Adolescents report being most motivated by encouragement from people who know their abilities and the domain.

Students often receive encouragement but do not always find it motivating. Whose encouragement motivates students and what cognitive mechanisms underlie this process? We propose that students' responses to positive feedback (e.g., encouragement) hinge on mental state representations, specifically what the speaker knows. Across three studies, we find that U.S. adolescents (n = 581-759 11- to 19-year-olds per study, preregistered; > 80% racial/ethnic minorities; > 36% low income) report being more motivated by, more confident in, and more likely to seek out encouragement from hypothetical and re

An Update on Neuroaging on Earth and in Spaceflight.

Over 400 articles on the pathophysiology of brain aging, neuroaging, and neurodegeneration were reviewed, with a focus on epigenetic mechanisms and numerous non-coding RNAs. In particular, this review the accent is on microRNAs, the discovery of whose pivotal role in gene regulation was recognized by the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Aging is not a gradual process that can be easily modeled and described. Instead, multiple temporal processes occur during aging, and they can lead to mosaic changes that are not uniform in pace. The rate of change depends on a combination of externa
